“double executive room advance breakfast”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

nice clean room, power shower amazing. Breakfast standard is excellent, self service, cooked just lovely, staff so friendly and really nice none cramped set up AAA+++. Pool changing rooms terrible, awful, shocking, no family changing area, you basically have to take your kids into the mens or womens changing area and strip naked with no privacy cubicles or screens!! NOTacceptable in this day and age,my son is 7 and i took him into the ladies stupidly thinking there was private/screened cubicles, we ended up locking ourselves into a small toilet cubicle to change and didnt enjoy the experience, not to mention the un-approving looks from the other women as we entered/left the changing room!! we didnt visit the pool again and this was one of the highlights of my sons stay. Window in our room would not close on our first night so endured traffic noise all night, reported next day and seemed to be fixed when we got back, however, window managed to open by itself again at stupid o clock right over my sons bed bringing traffic noise and cold air over him....had to tape the window up myself just to get some sleep, we left the holiday inn with very noticeable black tired bags under our eyes....7 year old included!! we will not be going back!!

Room Tip: executive rooms 400 + are at the end of the hotel and are much quieter with regards to passing foot...

Thank you for posting a response on Tripadvisor regarding your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Chester South.
I was pleased to hear your positive coments regarding breakfast and the friendliness of the staff.
I do hope the few negative issues commented upon with regard to the changing facilities in the Leisure Cllub and window in your bedroom did not spoil your enjoyment and I will ensure these are passed on to the Heads of Department concerned in order that any appropriate corrective action can be carried out.

Stayed here on 2-night leisure stay with friends. We were a group of 7 adults. Arriving at different times on Friday 28th Oct 2011. Myself, husband and one friend arrived first around 5.15pm (after having spent 3 hours ar Broughton Shopping Centre - wish I lived closer to that place!). Quick check-in, where information about anything we would need to know was pleasantly forthcoming. We were in Room 257, which was positioned on first floor by restaurant. A very welcome pack of posh jaffa cakes was in our rooms (they got consumed at 2am) Within the next 3 hours we all arrived. The first night we got a 7 seater into Chester. Quoted £10 using a taxi number the hotel supplied. Over the weekend we used taxis a few times back and forth, couldn't always get the 7-seater, but were not charged more than £5 when there were 4 or less in a taxi.
Husband and I used the leisure facilities, although none of our other friends did. Too many children in the pool and Jacuzzi for my liking. The saunas were separated into men and women located in the changing rooms.
We didn't eat in the restaurant on our first night, and we hadn't booked for breakfast either. I was aware our hotel was the ONLY place in Chester that I could use 1 Tastecard for 50% off food for a party of 7 on a weekend. Having checked out a sample menu on the internet before going away which had no prices on I was anticipating the restaurant menu prices to be twice the norm that I would expect in a standard food outlet (this would explian taking Tastecard on a weekend). We had during the afternoon of saturday managed to find one place having availability to seat 7 for dinner that evening. However it was an expensive hotel charging around £20 for a main and having looked at a reviewer on this site saying it was over-priced and small portions, it really seemed crazy to go though when we were already in a hotel with a restaurant. Having checked availability and looking at the menu at reception in our own hotel, it appeared the 2 vegetarians amongst us had better choices at our own hotel and prices were unbelieveably reasonable. There was a choice of 6 starters priced around £4 and mains were priced around £11 (8oz steak was the most expensive thing at a still reasonable price of £14.90), most pudding were £3.60.
So we cancelled our booking at the overpriced hotel in Chester Centre and stayed put!
One of the Vegetarians had the sizzling fahita that had a bad review recently in someone's post. My friend enjoyed it, though couldn't manage too much after having the good portion size of the potato skin starter!
I had Hunter's chicken which I enjoyed immensely. 3 friends had steaks and were quite happy with them too (though the 2 with the peppercorn sauce were quite surprised how hot the sauce was)
3 of us had dessert (though having all had starters and mains we really didn't need them, but there's something about 50% off food which makes you think its rude not to have a taste)
The only critism would be one of the liquer coffees had to be returned because the cream was on the turn, but there was no quibble and it was replaced straight away.
Instead of going into Chester for drinks and merriment we decided we may as well stay in the hotel bar. Drinks prices were in-line with other hotel prices. Not exactly a Wetherspoons, but not a Hilton either.
I'm only marking the hotel a 4 instead of a 5 because of the little details like cream that was off, nobody keeping an eye on the kids in the pool messing about despite signs forbidding diving, and an unwelcome visitor in our room on Friday night......a big spider! Husband managed to catch it in the plastic beaker with the jaffa cake cardboard box and take it out into the corridor. (I later learned he released it the next morning and let it run off).

Room Tip: Avoid room 255 at moment. They have problems with a leaky loo. Some friends got issued with it and h...

rooms were more or less clean. Food - 1 night was just ok, the second night was appalling! We were in the restaurant for more than hours and still didn't get our dessert. Main course was a greasy pool of oil with over-fried veg....it was nowhere near the sizzler it was described as. Very poor. The waitresses were lovely but they had heard all the complaints before. Restaurant manager was offhand and aloof. Not a good experience!

Room Tip: Miles of corridors - if you struggle walking, ask for a room near the entrance.

Thank you for your comments on Tripadvisor regarding a recent stay at the Holiday Inn Chester South. I was extremely sorry to learn of the problems you encountered whilst dining in the restaurant on the second night of your stay. We take customer feedback seriously and the restaurant manager was very upset to learn of the disappointment experienced. As a result of this matter, a formal investigation will take place and retraining instigated with the staff concerned.
Thank you again for your comments and I do hope this unfortunate experience did not completely ruin your stay.

We have just come back from staying here and we had a great stay. Staff are really friendly, food was excellent and fast service on evening meal. Pool was great. Our 3 year old was very upset to leave.

Room Tip: Buy your zoo tickets from here for a discount rate and you don't have to queue when you arrive.

We wanted a leisure weekend near Chester to do a bit of sightseeing and of course a trip to the Zoo. Check in was very prompt and the reception staff very helpfull, even checking the weather forcast on line for us.
We booked a weekend stay (Fri - Mon) through Booking.com and got a cracking deal. We paid only a third of the tarrif shown at reception per night. Breakfast was not included, but if booked at check in a discount rate of £9.95 per person is available. We enjoyed our breakfasts, it is buffet style with plenty to choose from. If you want porridge you can order it from a member of staff who bring it to your table when it is freshly made. From the restaurant there are great views across the main road to the welsh hills.
The Hotel is located a few miles from the center of Chester, which is easily accessable via public transport, the bus stops right outside the hotel all day and into the evening or across the road is the park and ride durring the day.
The Hotel itself was very clean, as was our room (130), located to the rear of the Hotel where it is much quieter and not too much 'guest traffic'. The bed was VERY comfortable and houskeeping kept it spotless, toppping the comlimentary drink tray and bubble bath as used.
We took our swimming togs but did not use the pool as being the weekend and half term it was populated by a number oif children.
We had a meal in the bar on our first night, nothing grand, but, the bill with a few drinks came to £42.00, a bit steep for what we had. The staff were all very friendly and helpfull.
The following night we ventured into Chester having done some research online before our trip, to 'wine and dine' which was much better valuefor money. We can recomend the Buffet City chinese located next to the Grosvener Shopping Center on Newgate Street - all you can eat buffet for £10.50, with plenty of choice and friendly staff.
For lovers of real ale head for 'The Brewery Tap' on Lower Bridge St, a great selection of beers including some from thier own brewery. They also do very high quality pub grub, which we took advantage of.
Also a little further down the street is the 'Bear and Billet' another fine establishment with excellent real ale and food.
We did find Chester a tad expensive overall, but, if you search you can find value.
We enjoyed our stay and would use this hotel again if in the area.

Room Tip: Rooma to the rear are quieter.

Overnight stay on way to Wales to break up journey. Got cheap deal on net. Bit far from chester-£7.00 in taxi. Wouldnt advise parking in Chester city as very expensive and not many to boot. park and ride available across the road but its a dual carriage way. Clean, spacious rooms. Fab pool and breakfast was the best. Friendly helpful staff. Would stay again.

Welcomed with smiles, properly met and gret in the reception. Check in took no time at all.

The room (401) was clean and fresh and The TV put the one in the house to shame!

Its a holiday inn and lived up to all the expectations you expect from the chain but what really sets this hotel apart is the staff.

Nothing was too much trouble , smiles all round and a really pleasant stay.

I love the Chester Romanesque feature wall , very unusual to find a real stand out feature in a modern hotel and the sweeping views from the breakfast room towards the N Wales mountains really was a great place to wake up.
