“Excellent at the price”

Many reviewers seem to demand budget prices but expect 5 star quality. In my opinion this hotel offers a city center location at a budget price (10 minutes walk into town, preferably past The Architect pub). When i stayed i compared prices to the local Premier Inn (not being critical of Premier Inn as i stay with them all over the country and they are usually superb) and this would have cost me an extra £14 per night without free parking and without a free breakfast. The parking is right outside the entrance and the breakfast was more than adequate. Also an ice machine is in reception and you can also help yourselves to free tea and coffee anytime in the lounge which my partner thought was great. All the staff were very courteous and polite and on departure it was so nice to be asked if we had enjoyed our stay. My only tiny niggle was that the mattress on the bed was very, very soft and i suffered with back ache for a couple of days afterwards. All in all a very enjoyable stay and would certainly return.

Room Tip: overlooking the racecourse is good and quiet.

Signposting to the Hotel /Racecourse through the city (from the east using the A51) was poor, the one sign we picked up on did state for the race course but specified `follow industrial estate` thereafter.
Upon arrival at the hotel (located roadside adjacent to the racecourse) customers are left to assume they should take the main racecourse entrance leading to the car park`s `checkpoint Charlie`. The very `weathered` and clearly unhappy old chap who was posted inside a (telephone box sized) cubical barked out "name" to which I duly provided supported by its phonetic spelling. The, now incandescent` gate sentry repeated "NAME"....I again provided this and explained that providing the phonetic spelling surely eliminated any uncertainty about spelling / pronounciation. He replied "well dont"
My wife and I arrived at the unattended hotel reception desk and apparently `interupted` a female employee from watching TV in the `back office`, she was clearly `non plussed with our presence but nevertheless issued swipe card and a `robotic` version of directions to the room and breakfast hours before disappearing back to `Corrieland`.

The cooked Breakfast (included in the room rate) `used` to consist of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and baked beans. . What sparked my curiosity in the first instance was the empty compartment at the `hotplate`.....I had asked if we needed to get up earlier in order to be in time for any (I assumed it was) bacon. but the staff member indignantly informed me that budget `cuts` meant that the bacon option is no longer provided!

Otherwise, the room was as expected for the budget venue and many other staff seemed quite pleasant / wanted to be at work to support a cordial and efficient atmosphere.

The hotel’s location is perfect for the customer who wants easy access to the lovely historic city of Chester.

For a no frills venue we would have no hesitiation to stay here again in the future …. hopefully those unhappy members of their staff will have moved on.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room (facing the racecourse)

This is another HIX so you know what you get - double bed, double sofa-bed, Samsung TV, shower, loo, heater, kettle and no air con.

This is a new HIX although the second floor smells a bit weird. The rooms are a little smaller than HIX normally does but are clean and ok quality.

As is usual with HIX breakfast is included. It's not fab but it does.

The real attraction of this place is that it's on the racecourse so you get a good view from the room. Also, while they don't do supper they send you to a very nice place in the racecourse called 1539.

If you are looking to work in Chester or have a weekend away then this is a good choice.

Stayed at this hotel a number of times and never been disappointed, superb location super staff who will go out of their way to make sure your stay is an enjoyable one.Added bonus of free car parking, most unusual for a city hotel. Easy access to centre of town 5 min walk, also worth knowing is a deliver in menu is available from reception if you don't fancy a meal out, great if you have children with you.Rooms are comfy with a nice flat screen tv with freeview, already looking looking to return in March, would recommend without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for room with view of racecourse.

This hotel was very easy to find and get to, parking was fine there was plenty of spaces when we arrived (Sat morning) we didnt need a ticket for the car.
The hotel was very clean and our room that we had was quite big, we were overlooking the road at the side, it would of been nice to have a racecourse view but we were not that fussed really.
The room had everything we needed and we had no complaints with it whatsoever.
The reception staff were friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was not too brilliant but was ok, there did not seem to be a queing system and everyone was just jumping in and helping themselves.
The hotel is only a 5 minute walk into the town centre, overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

I have a complaint pending with the hotel. The room we were given had a view of the race course. The toilet seat was broken, the wooden panel under the tv came away, there was what appeared to be old, uncleaned sick on the fabric bed base.

Sleep was poor - generator running all night and constant trains.

Breakfast was not up to HI Express standard (as a Gold Priority Club member, I am "qualified" to say) - coffee awful, croissants miniscule, cereal choice non-existant unless you like flakes of some kind, cheese warm, no yoghurts on the second morning.

The best thing was that parking was free - but they more than clawed the money back on the £10 for two drinks bar bill...........

We stay here often because of its easy parking near the race course, the rooms are very clean and the staff are really nice. Breakfast here is a bit poor though. as it is more of a continental. They do not do english breakfasts, shame really. I wish they would do a better breakfast.
easy walking distance to the city.
