“A bit of gem”

St John the Baptist's Church

I thought this church was really excellent, I visited Durham and reviewed and while St. Johns is not on that scale it has similarities that make you look twice at the architecture and its history. The staff were helpful, full of information and made the visit very worthwhile. It is right next to the Amphitheatre so kill two birds with one stone.

An offhand comment made me pop in here and I am very glad I did. It would really only be of much interest to those who like old churches but for those who do, it should be high on the list of places in Chester to visit.

It is historically and architecturally interesting. There is a guide sheet available to point out the main features. It is written in a rather idiosyncratic style but it covers the main points and there was a very helpful assistant/guide called Stanley who filled me in on what to look out for and obviously knew the history of the place.

Have a cup of tea/coffee there if you wish or even purchase a second hand book. Outside there are also some older ruins which are not extensive but worth a look at.

Everything as once it was The original Chester Cathedral. The one that people know as the Cathedral is not the original
