“Quaint and friendly”

My partner and I came across THE ALBION by accident, after seeing the menu board in the street, whilst making our way towards the river.
We were welcomed by an extremely friendly hostess who allowed us to bring our small dog in with us into the bar area. She couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating - Even bringing our dog a bowl of water.
After choosing our meals from options on a large chalk board they arrived after a short wait even though they seemed quite busy. Food was tasty and HOME made - however not huge portions. That said,we would certainly recommend it, and the surroundings were really interesting with many items from the 1930's and 40's. We would definitely go back, if in the area.

The Albion is the last Victorian terraced pub within the walls of Chester and has been maintained in a very characterful way by Christina & Mike Mercer and is something of a Chester institution .
The style is distinctly turn of the century , that’s is turn of the last century with the walls adorned with Patriotic great war poster plus advertising memorabilia of the time .
The layout is a main saloon bar and a pair of cracking snugs ,,, wonderful on a winters night with the fire roaring . There were just a couple of ales on draught but they were well kept and very quaffable , the food, also in the style of yesteryear, was filling and substantial . The bar staff are a serious asset , friendly and efficient in making sure that you settle in and want for nothing.
The accommodation is just two rooms , with full bathroom and shower en suite , comfortable and tastefully decorated carrying on the early 1900’s feel of the place, hence no TV,,, not a problem to me.
Christina prepares a great breakfast for you in the wonderful snug and can provide plenty of inside information for what is to be seen, eaten and drank in Chester , whose city wall can be accessed only yards away from the pub . An early morning walk of the walls being a great way to get you bearings on Chester itself where there is plenty to see and places to imbibe making for a great place to say and wonderful city to visit. I would happily do it all over again.

We visited this establishment in October 2013. The proprietress was moaning about a recently opened establishment which had received a '5' for food hygiene. This did become repetitive, and frankly, boring. We suspected a touch of 'professional jealousy'. Having experienced the Albion's casserole, we do not feel that the rival establishment has anything to worry about. Our 'casserole'. was massively, meagre of meat,The accompanying vegetables were nonedescript, lukewarm, soggy and the cabbage was stringy, with far more stalk than leaf. We are aware that our review 'flies in the face' of others, but we can only comment upon our experience, which was not good. We are top contributors to Trip Advisor, and by far the majority of our reviews are positive. Regretfully, this review isn't. Beware of this place - enter at your peril, and for Real Ale afficionados might we recommend the Cross Keys, at the town end of Duke street? (The food is better there, and less expensive.) We have no connection with the latter establishment, apart from being customers. We will not darken the doors of the Albion on future visits to the lovely City of Chester.C'est la vie!

We were made very welcome by Christina who combines high production values with a warm heart. The room was very nicely decorated and thoughtfully equipped; the breakfast was cripplingly good. And the pub is in a great location.

We enjoyed a one night stay at The Albion on a Saturday night. It is like stepping back in time but in a positive way. The hostess could not be more welcoming or accomodating. She is a fantastic advertisemnet for British hospitatlity. We had a twin room which had everything in it you would expect although it doesn't have a TV. they didn't exist in 1914! However they set up a TV in a little snug bar to let my partner watch Strictly Come Dancing to which she's addicted. We dined well there and were very surprised to find that the reasonably priced main dishes included a bottle of wine when two were ordered together. How good is that? Very good real ales as well. the breakfast was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The Albion doesn't have its own parking but they either provide a parking permit to park outside or use an office car park at the weekend which is sited at the rear. Either way, there's no charge and no long distances to walk. The only shame is that they have only two rooms which means we can't take a large party of people to enjoy their hospitality. One final thing, they were totally relaxed about check out time as the room wasn't going to be used the next day. This further added to a stress free break.

Although I had been to Chester a number of times, this time we took the advice of the Tripadvisor reviewers and walked the circuit of the city walls. Really lovely way to see the city and the environs. On the north side, The Albion pub's blackboarded rules and criteria for entry ( including " family hostile") enticed us into this timewarp old-fashioned pub with lovely handpulled ale. The food looked good, although unfortunately we weren't hungry.

This is a bit late as we stayed here earlier in the year. We looked at the reviews as you do and went for it. The hosts are tops! Christina could not be more helpful and welcoming, her hubby is the best pub landlord you could hope to meet. It's his pub and he runs it the way he likes, if you don't like it bugger off. The pl;ace is a monument to 2 world wars and the way a pub should be. It won't please everybody but who cares the gaffer certainly don't and as he has been there over 30 years he must be doing it right. It's a quaint old fashioned English pub, no lager,no music and excellent pub grub. Plus if you stay a breakfast you won't get anywhere else. The rooms are clean and tidy the beds comfortable and the ambiance is clearly designed to help you relax. You will be made very welcome and provided with a council parking ticket which is worth quids in Chester. Oh one other thing when you look at these reviews it is easy to get the wrong impression from the bad or poor reviews. Thing to do is look at the whole picture if there are 20 good and 3 bad, you have to remind yourself that you can't please all the people all the time. There is one on here moaning about lumpy mash, obviously this person hasn't got the brains to use the fork to sort out the lumps. Ask the gaffer about his time in the Merchant Navy if you have got an hour to spend.

Room Tip: If its gonna be warm weather go for the rooms at the back of the pub.
