Review of Brook Street Cafe

Brook Street Cafe
Ranked #42 of 47 Coffee & Tea in Chester
Restaurant details

I have eaten at most of the cafes in Chester and this is one of the most consistent and cheapest. You will not be having award winning sausages, free range eggs, fresh baked bread, or free range organic bacon. Buy what you will have is a freshly made breakfast at a great price, tea included. I ate out at The Cheshire Bistro and it cost me £10 for the same breakfast, whereas here, you get the lot for under a fiver. This is a cafe where real Chester people come to. If your a pretentious snob who can't cook then stay away cause you'll do nothing but complain!! The people who come here are diverse to say the least, which is one of the reasons I go there. My only gripe would be there sausages are not that great. Just okay, but edible. Other than that, the food is just fine. The toilets are always clean as is the Cafe. The great people who run it have turned it around. It used to be so rough and disgusting even the rats would run away. If you are out to pick faults, then there may well be a few cracks. Otherwise, go there, pick up a newspaper (provided), and enjoy some decent food at a good price. All the food they make is just fine.

Popped in for a hearty breakfast and wasn't dissapointed. Had the Full English with a mug of coffee for 4 quid and it was lovely. Everything well cooked and tasty which isn't too much to ask of a breakfast yet some cafe's don't even seem to get this basic right, nice runny egg and bacon cooked with some colour on it, not like it was run under the hot tap for 20 seconds like some places serve it. Friendly servers and the place was clean enough for a 'greasy spoon'. Had worse breakfasts for nearly twice the price.

This cafe always seems to be busy everytime we pass, so we thought we'd give it a try. Bad idea. The food is very cheap and low quality and the coffee is disgusting. Our drinks were brought over in cracked mugs with the teaspoon still in them. Classy! I saw a girl come out of the back and dry cutlery from the diswasher and put it in the cutlery basket for customers to collect. The tea towel was filthy! She then threw the towel over her shoulder - hardly hygienic! The place was generally scruffy and I couldn't wait to get out of there. There's no way I'd go back.
