Owner description: Bringing to life Chester's amazing story of its Great Siege, The Battle of Rowton Moor and the Pubs and Houses from the 17th century, all wrapped in the overall story of the English Civil War.

Just off the train, unsure how to learn about Chester but not wanting a 'shopping experience', we pitched up at the tourist information centre and met a lady in 17th century costume who was about to conduct a tour of the civil war in Chester. We plunged in, and spent a fascinating hour and a bit walking round Chester, learning about its part in the civil war. Vivienne was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and answered all our relevant (and irrelevant!) questions. She made us want to know more about Chester's history so we then went off to the museum, which was also excellent (and free). What a good day out!!!

Having already been on the Battle of Rowton Moor tour with Ed we knew we would have a thoroughly interesting and informative time when we went on the evening tour of pubs in Chester which all had links with the Civil War. We weren't mistaken. Ed is a mine of information and holds your attention from start to finish. Ed and his trainee make the subject of the Civil War come to life as they take you around the streets of Chester reliving the period. Highly recommended!

The tour guide(s) (we had a trainee with us), were very welcoming and were very personable. They were dressed in costumes fitting for 1645! They knew their stuff and made a subject that had bored me at school, very, very interesting and relevant. I had no idea that the Civil War had been so important to Chester. They added lots of little facts in as we walked the streets and the walls, they pointed out so many interesting places to go to that we now have to return as we only had 24 hours in the City! We all came away with real understanding of the Civil war and about King Charles' personalty! The walk was easy, we climbed went down lots of interesting streets and up onto the wall and got lots of amazing views of the city, we came away with a greater sense of where to go and what else to see.

We went on Ed's Civil War walk on a drizzly morning, however as soon as you meet Ed he makes you feel at ease. We were the only 2 on this walk but he didn't let this stop him giving us a great experience. Ed is very knowledgeable about the Civil war and Chester, without a guide they are just buildings but with Ed's knowledge and character he brings them alive.
I would thoroughly recommend Ed's tour and for £6.50 per person think you will find it very difficult to beat for value for money

I got in touch with Ed, of Chester Civil War Tours, and organised an evening tour of Civil War related pubs for a group of workmates. Right from the start, Ed was incredibly helpful, giving me a good outline of the tour and happy to tailor it to suit our needs -- and train times!

We started in the Pied Bull, where we had some food and a tour of the cellars, including the pub's microbrewery. That's where we met Ed, in full Cavalier garb complete with sword. He gave us some of the historical background while we were eating -- this wasn't to everyone's taste, but we only had a few hours so it was probably necessary.

We then went on to the Watergates, with lots of information en-route, before taking in The Falcon and The Brewery Tap. Ed had plenty to say about the history of each pub, as well as various buildings (and other pubs!) along the way. He departed, and we had one more pint in The Bear and Billet before heading home.

It was a really good and interesting tour, well-paced, and even the Chester-dwelling members of the group learned a few things about their city. There's plenty to tell about the English Civil War, which seemed to be pretty much glossed over during our history lessons. Oh, and there was plenty of excellent ale!

Ed, as a guide, was engaging and knowledgeable, and I reckon he could happily run the tour again with an entirely different selection of pubs.

In summary, highly recommended. If you've got a group wanting to learn a bit about Chester's past, you can do a whole lot worse than give these guys a shout.
