“poor family stay”
Reviewed 13 May 2013

We stayed at this guest house for one night over a weekend with family including our young son. we do not recommend this guest house for families with small children as the family room is on the 3rd floor and access is limited via a very steep staircase which is not suitable for the elderly or young!
After spending the day out with family we returned to the room to settle down for a good night’s sleep, when at midnight we were rudely awoken by the out-dated alarm clock system at the side of the bed which was set to go off at this hour! As my partner and I tried to silence this contraption it startled our little one who subsequently fell out of bed and was then distressed for some time after.
Morning came and we went down for breakfast, which is only served between 8.30am-9.30am, again not ideal with a young family, the dining room was very clean and tidy, however the choice of cereal and fruit was very limited. My grill breakfast was then served and it featured a lovely black hair! On returning the breakfast too the kitchen, the owners were pleased to change the breakfast, however I was distressed to find both a dog and a bird in the kitchen!
Upon leaving we were charged the full amount for our stay with no one addressing the issues we had incurred, they were simply brushed under the carpet!
We do wish we had stayed in a nearby hotel which was a better price and would have offered a spacious room with more facilities and a hair free breakfast!

Room Tip: rooms on the 1st floor would be easier to access and make sure the alarm clock is disconnected!

We are very sorry that you were not happy with your stay with us. We apologised for the breakfast which was immediately thrown away and replaced, and like-wise for the alarm clock that, as you suggested, may well have been switched on to the default alarm time during valeting the room. We did accommodate you by completing two rooms an hour before our check-in time so that you could change for a wedding; and, also, as you said you'd stayed with us before, we relaxed our rules about not taking children under the age of eight. It is because of the very young and elderly that our Access Statement, on our website, clearly describes each room and the staircase that accesses the room, but we do not have a third floor. Nearly all our bedrooms are on the first and second floor. The 'out of date' alarm clock is, in fact, quite a new multi-function alarm/clock/radio that one switches to the function required, or turns them all off except the clock. Any-one who wishes to visit our web site will see images showing a wide variety of cereals , fresh fruit, fresh fruit salad, preserved fruit and cheeses. When leaving we all had a very friendly chat with no sign that you were dissatisfied. Your son fussed our dog who, until he is called, stays quiet in his basket. You said your son stroked the dog more gently than he treats your cat so you are tolerant to animals around the home.

We were warmly welcomed by Helen with an immediate offer of tea or coffee. Mitchells is a lovely victorian house with high ceilings very nicely decorated with a home from home appeal. Our Double Room was decorated in a tasteful way. Nice toiletries and fluffy towels in the en-suite shower room. The tea tray is one of the best we have ever had; even better than 5 star big hotels we have stayed in. The communal lounge is comfortable and has books and a large TV as well as visitor information. The breakfast was fabulous; a wide choice of juices and fruits, cereals etc. freshly cooked and good quality English breakfast and toast – croissants if you like too! All served with quality crockery – linen napkins – crystal glasses – excellent! Just a 20 minute walk into the city centre this is a great location too. We will most probably be back and would recommend it to others. The personal touch and those little extras make this a great place to stay!

very clean, modern bathroon, fab room, more than the usual tea coffee than at many hotels, so glad we stayed here, less anonymous than staying at a hotel, delicious breakfast, plenty of it, short distance from chester town centre... will go back next time we stay in chester

Room Tip: we had the super king size... no complaint at all about this place, the owners couldnt be any better

We had a really nice long weekend at Mitchells of Chester, we received a lovely welcome with tea and biscuits plus some really useful information regarding what to see and where to eat in Chester. Our bedroom was lovely and the on suite nice, all very clean and tidy, the breakfast was superb and the service equally so, loved listening to the parrot in the evening. An excellent place to stay if you want to explore Chester and surrounding areas and very reasonable priced as well.

Lovely b&b, very well ran, we had a nice big bed which was very comfy, had the best sleep I've had in ages. Made us feel very welcome, and was nice to see the family pets wondering round and the parrot talking away, it was a really nice breakfast in the morning with brilliant service to go with it, the whole place is very clean and nicely decorated, definitely go again x x

A lovely place, great beds, lovely room. The owners were lovely. A good location for chester however could be closer but all the same - great.

Parking abit of a tight squeeze, too many rooms sadly not enough spaces for cars.

Great stay overall

We had a very pleasant 3 day break here.
Whilst not right in the heart of Chester it is only about 20 minutes walk and in a very nice area of Chester. It is on a moderately busy road but we didn't find the traffic noise a problem.
Breakfasts were good, with a better than normal choice.
We had a family room on the top floor. Big room with a double and two singles.

Room Tip: If on the top floor the last staircase is a bit steep and tight, so would recommend smaller bags / c...
