Having had a lovely stay here 18 years ago and not having visited Chester since, we were looking forward to a nostalgic return. However, despite very good staff, the hotel itself did not appear to have changed a bit since our last visit. Although the hotel was clean, the decor was very dated, the furniture throughout looked rather tired and the heat throughout the hotel was unbearable, although the weather was not particularly hot. Air conditioning is desperately needed here along with refurbishment and updating. Had we been staying for longer than two nights, we would have moved hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a canalside room - our room was at the front of the hotel above the noisy kitchen extractor...

We stayed over the weekend of 13th/14th August and had a standard double room on the 3rd Floor, opposite the gym.The room was clean , the staff very friendly and we enjoyed the pool, sauna and steam room, which are not always an option with a 3 star hotel. The breakfast was good and we didn't have to wait long to be seated. The hotel do warn guests that between 9 .00 and 10.00 it is really busy. The hotel is only a short walk from the City Centre, so in my opinion it is ideally situated. The free car park is another bonus. Yes,the walk from the hotel to the City Cenre is not easy on the eye,but that is not the fault of the hotel.
However, what The Mill need to address is the temperature in the bedrooms - a good nights sleep is pretty difficult as there is no fresh air and despite opening the window, the temperaure is very uncomfortable. Also there is a continual noise outside(generators?) ,which makes sleeping even more of a problem .
I think the hotel is very good value for money and cannot criticise it for anything apart from the heat in the rooms and in certain corridors.
The hotel to my knowledge have not responded to the comments about the room temp. and they should,as it implies disinterest in what guests have to say.

The Mill Hotel is in a good location even if my sat navigation did had problems finding it. The location on either side of the Chester Canal is very interesting as there are a whole range of pubs and restaurants along the canal footpath and the hotel itself is also only about 10 minutes walk to the city centre and its famous clock, I'm sure locals will know even quicker routes. We paid £240.00 for a three night stay, Thurs to Sat and didn't really have time to use the facilities very much as we spent most of our time looking around the city attractions, shops and visiting relatives in nearby North Wales.

I did make use of their internet connection on my laptop via, a network cable provided in the room but the WI-FI signal that was there on the Thursday disappeared after day one and I couldn't connect my phone on both the other two days. I'm not sure where that signal went as the network named 'conference' never appeared again and this wasn't a major problem for me but if the only way you have to check your emails or whatever you are doing is via, WI-FI you might have a problem? Another little thing that gets this hotel a black mark was the fact we found a pair of ladies shoes sticking out from under the bed on arrival. Whoever made the bed before we arrived must have fallen over them but didn't bother to move them. Odd?
So if you're missing a pair of ladies fawn coloured hush puppies you left them at the Mill Hotel.
Of course because of the shoes we now had a cause to look under the bed and it was obvious they don't bother to vacuum under there as there were bits of old biscuits, peanuts and an assortment of rubbish and coins. Didn't create a great impression really! The rest of the room was fine.
The room is no smoking but it smelled like an ashtray on arrival and the reason being whoever used the room previously obviously smoked beside the window as too not set off the smoke alarm and used the roof outside as an ashtray. Not really the hotels fault but again just took the edge off our stay. As others have said the hotel is very warm and could be very uncomfortable if it the weather was good but as it wasn't during our stay we just about tolerated it.
The breakfast was pretty good but no variation on the three days we were there. Changing the beans for tinned tomatoes and making some mushrooms available from time to time wouldn't be difficult, but what was there was perfectly acceptable during a three day stay. The bar in the hotel seemed very popular and had a selection of real ales and sky TV showing football. There is a barrier entry car park that needs organising as the guests (read idiots) sometimes park their vehicles in the most ridiculous fashion, blocking the access through the car park and on one occasion totally blocking me in so I couldn't get out. It was someone who used the gym on this occasion and yes he drove a 4x4. If someone got a real grip on this hotel it could be even better than it is and whilst it's not the best 3 star hotel I've ever stayed in its certainly not the worst. I would probably recommend the hotel on its location alone. The free parking etc, adds to the plus points but as I've said it isn't perfect and I really think it wouldn't take that much to make it even better.

Room Tip: The other side of the hotel where the gym is looks to have been renovated.

The hotel itself is in a good location, only a few minutes walk from the town centre. It was a little difficult to find and the frontage is rather disapointing; The free parking was a bonus though. The hotel staff were polite and friendly and the place was clean and tidy but our room was pretty small and basic, despite upgrading to a buisness room., and of course, as others have mentioned, it was very hot, I am usually the first to complain I am cold, but even I had trouble sleeping due to the heat. The TV had very limited channels and the WiFi was wired. The breakfast was fine, although they could have had more fruit on offer. As it was our wedding anniversary, we booked a meal on the barge for the saturday evening. It was a pleasant experience and the meal itself was nice, although they were a bit stingy with the bread, only serving one small piece per person before the first cours, with no more given with the soup or pate in the first course. When we asked for more we were told there was none left. I did go swiimming in the pool which was nice and relaxing.

Overall it certainally isn't the best 3 star hotel we have stayed in, and a bit over priced for rather basic accomodation, but it is close to the centre, and the staff were freindly so guess that kind of makes up for it.

The Mill

We booked in for a special mid week 2 night break including a three course meal and two breakfasts - priced at £190 - our room was a club class room and situated close to the spa.

The hotel is very central and easy to find with free parking directly outside reception area - staff were efficient, helpful , friendly and informative  - the hotel is in two buildings joined across the canal by a covered walkway - there are lifts but also some steps to be negotiated.

The room was large over looked the canal and had a king size bed - it was clean and tidy and included amenities such as an iron and ironing board - TV and tea making equipment, telephone - bathroom had a large bath and an overhead shower - all in good condition - the temperature was fine although the outside temperature was around 18-20c during the day.

The staff were consistently very pleasant and helpful throughout our stay and two things stuck out in our visit which well exceeded our expectation.

The first surprise was the spa  which was very good - it has a  pool of just under 20 meters in length but it is well designed and tastefully decorated with a sauna and a steam room and a hot tub, all in close proximity to each other so we spent over two hours lounging around in the late afternoon with no more than a dozen people coming and going.
There is a well equipped gym and changing rooms with lockers.

The second thing that struck us was the quality of the included three course evening dinner in the Canaletto Restaurant -  we had not expected too much as the set price was not high and the published menus not that impressive and there was not too much promotion for the restaurant on the website but as a couple we have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world and we were both  impressed with the whole dinning experience- all the staff were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive - the decor was relaxed on a venetian theme and it was well lit - the seating was comfortable and table placings were well above what we expected for the price - the menu is not extensive but large enough to make a selection enjoyable - we ate from the vegetarian set dinner menu as well as the standard dinner menu and the overall quality of food was again a very pleasant surprise - well presented delicious fresh soup and a goats cheese tartlet starters were followed by stuffed peppers with couscous and perfectly cooked lamb chump both dishes served with suitably intense sauces and a lightly cooked but flavoursome selection of vegetables . Dessert was elegantly served being a light but well flavoured lemon sponge and a poached pear. There is an extensive and reasonable priced wine list which conveniently included some 50 cl bottles

Breakfast was included in the room rate and was buffet style all well cooked and of good standard with good cereal and fruit selection - all as you would expect in a city hotel of this nature however the service from the staff was again very good and the environment was welcoming.

In summary we would happily recommend this hotel as a very good value place to stay in Chester with a special mention for the spa and the very pleasant surprise of finding a place to eat of the quality of the Caneletto Restaurant which does not feature in any recommended places to eat in the city.

Arriving by car seems a bit chaotic.
Reception friendly but it takes some time to get your keycard.
Rooms are ok, but quite warm when stayed there.
Elevator out of order, ok, can happen.
Breakfast very simple, at least to British standard.
Conveniently located to visit Chester city centre.
