“Excellent Location - Needs some attention”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2012

This hotel has a very good location only 5 minutes walk from the centre of Chester. Free car parking is provided in the hotel's private car park. Room facilities are very good with a high level of comfort and good bathrooms. The public areas are adequate but could benefit from a good overhaul. The hotel is always very busy and this shows especially in the bar area. Dirty glasses left on tables and outside by the canal which is the smoking area. The hotel operate a floating restaurant serving set meals nightly. This is a novelty but unfortunately the canal trip does not fulfil your expectations. The barge travels for a short distance in one direction while you are being served a starter then returns to the hotel to collect the main courses. The barge then travels in the opposite direction for a few hundred yards while you are eating your main course. There is a stop at the end to allow smokers to get off and have a cigarette before setting off to have your desert and return to the hotel. The atmosphere on the barge is very pleasant but from a sight seeing point of view fails miserably. The buffet breakfast is excellent with a very good choice of cooked and cold food. The restaurant is always busy and serves some very good food with a good choice if you decide to have lunch or dinner in the hotel. The spa is excellent and not overcrowded. Overall we had a very good visit and would return to this hotel.
The staff are very attentive and are always willing to assist.

Room Tip: Rooms above or facing the bar from across the canal are troubled by noise until the early hours.

Lovely hotel at the side of the canal that does a really good meal as you travel along the canal one way while you have your starter and then they return to the hotel to pick up your freshly cooked and piping hot meal to then go the other way on their own boat, there are 2 types of cruise to go on and you can even do dinner cruises. Going back for Christmas Dinner Dance and overnight stay. The staff are are excellent and you can enjoy a drink from the bar outside by the canal watching the world go by

My husband and i have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Mill lodge hotel and spa, Chester.

We booked this after seeing an offer on Travelzoo.

I have to say from arriving to leaving we have had a lovely stay and we both would have been more than happy to say for longer.

We arrived early not expecting our room to be ready but it was along with our complementary bottle of wine with glasses on ice! We had paid 10.00 extra for a club class room and it was very comfortable indeed with a corner bath, large sofa etc, very clean and very comfortable bed.

Our deal included a 3 course meal on the first night, but we also had a visit for lunch in the restaurant when we arrived. It was very nice indeed, we have paid an aweful lot more for a meal in city centre Leeds and it has not been as good!

Excellent, helpful service from the restaurant staff, all food very well presented with a decent selection of wines and beers, nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

The hotel also offers a meal cruise on the canal i would really recommend this even if the weather is poor( we had torrential rain for 2 days) its really nice with again a good selection on the menu, good fun and introduction from the captain!! The boat doesnt go far but it really is a great idea.

All in all if you are visiting Chester for a mini break it was our anniversary, the hotel is ideal, a few minutes walk along the canal side to the city centre and complimentary use of the spa, swimming pool sauna etc. If i am going to be picky at all my only criticism is that the lighting in the room is not very bright, even though there are several lamps, maybe this was the low energy light bulbs or just the poor weather outside.

Chester is a lovely city and we would not hesitate to stay at the hotel in the future, it really is a mini village in itself, they even had a jazz band playing in the bar on the Monday night, something for everyone.

We look forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: Room 344 no noise at all and a view of the canal.

This restaurant within the hotel is delightful. A window seat ensures a view of the canal and the passing barges which not only offer a short trip but serve lunch and dinner by arrangement.

We both had a smoked salmon starter with a perfectly poached egg; followed by rib eye steak which was perfectly cooked to our requirements. Waiter service was very good and we ended our meal with liqueur coffees, with the cream looking like the head on a draft beer!.

The restaurant offers single courses: plus two and three courses. We settled for the two course lunch at £10.00. The hotel has its own parking space for non-residents, which is a real bonus..

Room Tip: I personally cannot comment on the residential side, but I would imagine a stay in the hotel would b...

27 people of Various ages went to this hotel for my Step daughters Hen weekend, I found the hotel to be fantstic value for money, I was suprised at the size and decor of the room we stayed in and found that every member of staff strived to ensure that the guests requirements where met. This hotel has something for everyone regardless of age. Will definetly be returning to this hotel in the very near future for a weekend away with my Husband. Thank you again to the Manager and staff for a very enjoyable weekend

Room Tip: I stayed in a room overlooking the canal but feel that whatever room you get placed in you will not...

Every member of the staff at the Mill Hotel in Chester, Cheshire, England is trained to care for the guests with the utmost dedication. We booked for a family gathering, staying several nights and were provided with a small fridge for the baby grandson's milk along with a cot. A high chair was brought to the dining room table and everything done with such a caring attitude. All the facilities are top class and if you can't get to go yourself you couldn't buy a better gift for someone else than a stay in this wonderful hotel.
