“Gone downhill recently”

Grosvenor Garden Centre
Ranked #3 of 24 Shopping in Chester
Attraction details

During our visit today we found plants blown over with staff just walking past them, many plants were dying or in poor condition. Staffing levels seemed low and they did not seem to be very knowledgeable. Having visited Grosvenor many times over the last 10 years, it seems to have gone from one of the best garden centres in the UK with quality plants and excellent staff, to one that is no better than many chains and DIY stores.

Went here for the first time today and was totally blown away! The place is massive. We tend to go to our local garden centre for bits, but decided to travel a bit further to see what this place was like after recommendations. Big carpark, tho was very busy! - but that's bank holiday for you. The inside bit has a huge selection of home furnishings, gifts, indoor plants, foods, clothes, candles, garden furniture and loads more. Have to say my fave bit was looking at all the beautiful garden animal ornaments - there were so many! and although quite expensive, they were adorable. The outside section, again - huge with masses and masses of flowers. They looked of very good quality, and the colours were amazing :) There was also a very good range of garden tools etc. Cafe was packed! so we didn't fancy it. Quite a few members of staff were dotted about, happy to help - and the ladies on the till were very smiley and polite. Felt a bit sorry for them as many of the till systems had gone down, and there were huge queues of people; some moaning of course! but we were happy to wait, it wasn't too long. The only issue we come across was that it was very warm in there.. I would've liked to have spent a bit more time looking about - but it was too warm. Anyways, really wonderful place - and I imagine it must be gorgeous at Christmas time. Will definitely be going for that!

It's like a breath of air to go to a Garden Centre that's not ripping you off. The café is no disappointment either. It serves lighter meals such as sandwiches, we had coffee and scones excellent value. The décor is pleasant with both indoor and outdoor seating areas, our grandson loved the indoor and outside play areas. The plants are all in excellent condition and well watered. The whole area is immaculately clean. The Grosvenor is one of the best examples, the staff were very friendly lots of smiling faces.

The non-garden produce area is a bewildering warren of aisles and displays with the clothes tucked down the end, but I did find the Bee Mats quite easily, and the picture and chocolate assortment near the check-outs is pure temptation to a variety of your palates.

When you get through to the restaurant there are such choices to be made that will spoil you. We had the salmon and pea in filo pastry, the corn beef hash pie and cheese and onion vegetarian option. All three come with a complete mountain of assorted salad including coleslaw and chips or mash (if you can manage either). Excellent value, lovely array of teas, coffees and puddings and pastries for you to ummm and ahhh over.

Overall, I give it a three rose category, which is exactly what I bought, plus an orchid , which is what my wife bought, as they also have excellent wheelchair availability and access. Important when you take your 90 year old mother around with you.
