Ideally located for seeing the city with the added bonus that it has parking so you can leave the car and explore the city on foot. We received a warm welcome from the staff and the owner even took the trouble to greet us. We had a quaint but tastefully furnished and very clean room with fresh flowers on the bedside table - a lovely touch. The breakfast was freshly cooked and tasted so good that we decided to eat there the following evening when we found the food was every bit as good and reasonably priced. All the staff were very willing to please and nothing was too much trouble - thank you for an enjoyable stay

Food was very impressive - we both had the lasagne, and agreed it was probably the best pub lasagne we'd ever had, thick and meaty with a decent pail of chips on the side. Staff were friendly and welcoming, although there was quite a wait between the starter and main. Even after they asked if we were ready for it there was at least another 10-15 minutes before the food arrived.

went for a meal here during our stay in Chester. good atmosphere in an historic setting. we chose the steak pudding which was more suet than meat. gravy was the best part of the meal. I chose chips rather than horseradish mash. either the pint was expensive or I was charged for the chips as an extra!!! staff were very good. choice of ales were poor. wont be going back. better pub/ale/food next door at the 'Tap'

Very welcoming bar staff who took us to our room. The room itself (room 2) was very clean, had a comfy double bed, wardrobe, electric heater and a trouser press. It didn't have a tv but that wasn't too much of an issue. The bathroom was also very clean, the shower wasn't very powerful though. As it is meant to be haunted we were abit apprehensive about going to sleep and the floor boards on the landing creak very loudly when people walk on them but we slept through the night very well. Leaving time is at 11 but there wasn't a big rush to get you out. Overall, it was a lovely stay and if I was to go to Chester again, I would stay again.

Room Tip: Room 2 (not haunted as far as we could tell, but no tv)

Many thanks for your lovely review, we are extremely pleased you enjoyed your stay and would join us again when visiting Chester. The ariels have just been fitted for the new flat screen tv's, therefore they should be all up and running for your next stay. Thanks again.

Stayed here Saturday night and had a really good time. Perfect location to explore Chester, quirky and quaint building and really felt like you were back in time! Food was first class, service a bit slow at times but worth the wait. Room was extremely clean, cosy and cmfortable. Only disappointment was the lack of poltergeists!

Room Tip: If you don't want to be in one of the more active rooms for poltergeists, check when booking

Friendly bar staff and comfy rooms BUT housekeeping ruined our final impression - she harassed us on three separate occasions in the final hour BEFORE checkout and again when we left the room (she was impolite and even threatened to call the manager and charge us additional fees). Despite our negative final impression I would recommend it as a place to stay, particularly if people like a story behind a pub (most haunted pub) and old pub feel (tudor style, with exposed wooden beams in all rooms); it was a good location close to centre and the old city walls.

I would also recommend that the manager provide training for housekeeping or fire her, as she will damage your reputation.

The Kings Head is a traditional Inn built in 1622 on the west side of Lower Bridge Street. The Inn is a few minutes walk down hill from the Cross. The name refers to when King Charles stayed at the nearby Gamul House during the English Civil War. Since buying the business in March 2012 the current owners have spent thousands of pounds trying to bring the Ye Olde Kings Head back to it's former glory. In November 2012, the property had an extensive refurbishment throughout the bar and restaurant areas, every ensuite bathroom was also replaced and redecorated to a high standard. There are currently three completed refurbished rooms, by mid December 2013 they expect every bedroom to be finished. ... more   less
