We picked this pub on a whim to break up a long journey. We phoned up in advance to double check that dogs are welcome (indeed they are) and the waitress who answered was really helpful and friendly so we were already feeling rather well disposed towards the place. The pub is well situated in the centre of Chester next to a neat and pretty stretch of canal. The only grumble is that the sat nav sent us on a bit of a merry goose chase and the only parking we could find was in the railway station at £5.90 per car. If we weren't so weary we might have found the energy to seek out something less expensive but we'd already had enough driving. Perhaps the pub could consider adding some information about parking to their website?

The decor and atmosphere deserves a mention. This is a really stylish and cosy space with books, interesting trinkets and antique prints lining the walls. I loved the Victorian green paint and wooden bar and floors, along with the lovely big windows letting in lots of light. The atmosphere is lively and friendly. The staff are very bright and efficient and seem to enjoy working there.

The food itself was well worth the diversion to Chester. I had a pulled pork salad whilst the other people in my group opted for a traditional sunday lunch and steak. My salad was perfection and really well presented. The friend who chose the steak wasn't particularly bowled over and thought that the beef perhaps wasn't great quality but then I always think steak is a hard thing to get right for other people. However the members of the group who chose the Sunday roasts thought they were brilliant. A couple of us shared a bottle of white wine from the specials board which was delicious (not the drivers, obviously). Another non-driving member of the party had a pint of smoked porter which he reported was pleasing.

Children aren't welcome in the pub, which might irritate some but I think it's an absolutely divine policy. I would definitely recommend this place.

Just had a lovely Sunday roast, staff are excellent and are always friendly, food has never disappointed and the only problem ever has been getting a table as it can be very busy at times. Went for the chocolate fondant dessert and they got it spot on, will be back

Sunday lunchtime visit, shortly after opening time. Friendly and relaxing. Good selection of beers (and wines). Food was good, but a tad overpriced.

This pub is nicely situated next to the river and about 300 yards from the main rail station. It has some outside seating but most of these are taken during the summer months.
This place can get very busy and noisy. I arrived about 5pm and enjoyed a very nice meal. The ploughmans is huge!!
I guess it is a little pricey but it is good food and the service is quite friendly. It got very busy about an hour later but overall a decent place to eat.
