Before I get to the accomodation, consider the garden. Looks fabulous in spring. Absolutely fabulous.
This is definitely a niche hotel for genteel older couples many of whom seem to return regularly. This was a safe choice for taking my aged parents for a restful long weekend.
As such I think the hotel definitely understands its market. These are people who like to dress for dinner (tie & jacket required) & to enjoy having staff flutter around them. All the staff were friendly & at ease although in the dining room I felt there was an informal 2 class system in operation geared to towards those older couples. As an outsider I felt a little bit unwelcome- hard to say why. No, I wasn’t wearing a hoodie & dayglo trainers. The old fashioned standards meant that you stayed with the table you were given on the first night – fine if you are on a corner table by the window but much less fun if you are parked by the stairs. .
The food is of course traditional in style- some might say less adventurous. The dining room really only serves a set 5 course meal which can be a bit much if you believe in clotted cream teas earlier. There is a large, slightly pretentous wine list to keep the connoisseurs happy. For myself, I much preferred the informal jazzy atmosphere of The Cove brasserie a mile or so down the road with its more modern cuisine & relaxed atmosphere. The cooked vegetables at the Meudon were soft, at The Cove they were crisper. Says it all really..
The Meudon breakfast is cooked breakfast & I thought the selection surprisingly wide but again I was out of sorts being a modest cold collation man at heart. They did turn out a nice plate of cheese for me though when I asked (well the menu did say it was part of the buffet- but apparently it only goes out when the Germans are in town!)
The standard rooms are extremely comfortable & in a good state of decoration & all the rooms overlook the 8 acres of spectacular gardens in a valley that leads down to the sea. My standard room was really nice with a decent quality mattress & all decorated to a fine, not too chintzy standard.. And lord above, an evening turn down service!!
I did feel let down by the premium priced room with a 4 poster (supposed to be a stylish flourish for the folks- yes I know- daft idea). This room was not worth the premium as it was inferior in most respects to the standard rooms. The 4 poster bed was just that. A bed with 4 posts- I had had visions of yards of rich cloth curtains with which you could cocoon yourself away rather than those stupid 3 inch frilly adornments of reality. The mattresses are inferior, there is only an ugly view of a concrete roof from the window & the room fittings were just not as nice as in the standard rooms. The portable radiator just inside the door didn’t help. This was not clear from brochures ( I booked through Superbreaks) , or the hotels web site which reckoned the rooms to be an upgrade for that special occasion. Should I have complained? Well having pre paid I can’t see there would have been any point .
Recommended? If you are an older nicely bred couple then yes- spot on- for the standard rooms - make sure you get a decent table in the restaurant. Anyone else might feel the experience formal & stuffy. Old fashioned service & style has its place-for me that’s firmly in the 1950s- I prefer a different more modern service & style . Best bit though is definitely the gardens
