“A good day out”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

This does take up most of a day to explore, especially if you take the two guided tours included in the price. They are both very interesting and informative, and there is lots to see and do.

The museums have plenty of hands on fun and the views are spectacular.

The tea room is comfortable and reasonably -priced.

It is worth the money even if you have to pay, an, of course, if you're an English Heritage member, it is free.

“A lovely castle for a wander”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

Wonderful views, a broad historical sweep from medieval to world war, well worth a visit. We were lucky with a sunny day, but plenty indoors too.

“Very good value attraction”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

On parking there is a bit of a walk to the castle entrance but if you follow the road there is disabled parking at the entrance. The site is quite extensive so if you are not very mobile you may struggle but do try and make the effort, if only for the views.
The site is moated albeit it was a dry moat, there is a lovely little walk around the permitted of the site and some 2nd world war architecture along the way.

The entrance fee is £7 or free to English Heritage members, well worth the money. There is a little museum on the history of the site which spans hundreds of years. The castle itself is small and not really a castle but fascinating inside. Lots of tight narrow stairs so be warned.

The staff offer tours throughout the day so well worth hanging around for one of those, really helps piecing together the history. Easily a few hours could be spend here milling around, very enjoyable day.
