My husband and I stayed here with my mother-in-law in June for 3 nights.
We had a lovely welcome from Martin, who let us in slightly early, showed us to our rooms and got us a drink in the garden.
There is a very friendly and informal atmosphere, which means you can come and go when you want without worrying. You are given a room key and a front door key so you just let yourself in and out.
We found the hotel an ideal base for getting around. We drove most of the time, just for ease, but you can get the train or bus. It's about a 5 minute drive from Looe, and not far from other attractions like Polperro and the Lost Gardens of Helligan.
We also enjoyed the lounge which has three comfy leather sofas and a big TV.
Breakfasts were great - a good choice of fruit and cereals etc, although no pastries, and then a great cooked selection, which was never greasy and always delicious. Particularly liked the touch of spice on the mushrooms and the delicious fried bread.
My husband and I were in a king room, but didn't find the bed very large, although it was perfectly acceptable. The room had everything we needed and a great amount of storage.
The room was clean but we did notice some dust (a long trail of dust was hanging above our head when we first got in the shower) in both rooms, which my mother-in-law discussed with Gill before we left. She said she had hoped to do a "deep clean" in all rooms but hadn't got round to it because they were so busy.
The other small reason I have marked 4/5 instead of 5/5 was that the toiletries in the room were slightly disappointing. We also discussed this with Gill, and while we don't expect hand moisturiser or anything posh, it would be nice to have better quality separate shampoo and shower gel, rather than just a rather cheap quarter-full bottle of combined shower cream/shampoo, which we found when we arrived.
If the owners are looking for advice I just think this would create that extra special impression for people when they got to their rooms. I know they are into green/eco friendly measures so maybe you could find some sort of eco brand with recyclable bottles or something. It would really create that extra special impression.
But all in all this was a lovely place to stay, and I would definitely recommend it for those who want to see the sights of south east Cornwall, or for people who just want to have a nice relaxing weekend.

Thank you very much for your kind comments and for sharing your suggestions for improvement. We pride ourselves on our usual high standards of cleanliness. Operating at almost 100% occupancy this summer does present certain challenges in deep cleaning all our rooms so thank you for noting the dust in the shower extractor. We plan to replace all those that sit above the showers at the end of the season, but in the meantime, have taken steps to ensure that our cleaning routine guarantees a more regular review of dust levels.

We have also taken on board your comments about toiletries and will be sourcing a new range that both meets our environmental policy whilst better meeting the customer expectations you describe. Your constructive approach is most welcome. Thank you once again for your comments.

The Polraen Country House Hotel exceeds all expectations in providing a most comfortable small hotel experience made memorable by the welcome and sustained friendliness of the owners, Gill and Martin. The location in the beautiful Looe Valley is idyllic, away from the crowds but easy to visit all the delights of Cornwall; even without a car, as bus and train are at the doorstep. A holiday to remember with pleasure and highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent and located on the first floor of this small country house hotel.

As ever we had a fabulous time in Looe in late July, with amazing weather. This time we had three adults a 5 year old and 20 month year old to entertain. Gill and Martin were amazing hosts and really went the extra mile, including hanging clothes out, taking the membrane out of eggs and being the warm genuine people they are. The rooms were great and just the right size with little ones, with a delightful garden for them to stretch their legs in. Having three generations holiday together can be difficult but they make it easy. Gill suggesting a visit to Polperro was a highlight of our break. As was for me the jumbo prawns in a pint glass with garlic mayo, I can still taste them now. Delicious!! the 5 year old wanted Martin's sausage and mash for breakfast as well it was so good.
Next time they'll be more of us -so get ready!!

Room Tip: This hotel is great as it is 5 mins from Looe by bus which stops right outside Polrean front door. A...

Our small family (three adults and grand daughter aged 9) spent a couple of nights at Polrean early in July.

We chose this for its impressive looks, trip advisor reviews and it's location - we were well rewarded. Gill and Martin were properly interested in looking after us well (as in, you could have been their first customer) and that along with the informal ambiance of their country house, makes you feel right at home. Importantly, you want/need to feel comfortable and relaxed when staying away and Polrean's informality and service meet this admirably - plus the little pub style bar room when you arrive back at the end of the day is more than well received!

We needed some slight changes to bedroom arrangements and Gill/Martin were very happy to arrange this and that's in line with their ethos of looking after you the best they can.

The other important aspects when staying away are right up there too where you need/expect them to be - comfortable high quality rooms, cleanliness and very, very, nice food.

Evening dinner in their conservatory was lovely both for the setting and quality of Martin's cooking and food - breakfast was cooked totally fresh and individually for us and you know that's the case when you taste it.

The five stars (top mark) from the Food Standards agency for food hygiene gave us the confidence that Gill and Martin's food standards were very high and reflected in other aspects too.

If you're the sort of person who doesn't want or need to be worrying about what the place is like when you stay away, our experience of Polrean would say that you can rest happy - its a lovely home, enjoy it.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. We're so glad you all felt totally at ease and at home. Particularly during the school holidays, we enjoy welcoming extended families - somehow the atmosphere at Polraen just 'works'. We enjoyed your company and appreciate your praise about the quality of the food we serve at breakfast and evening dinner - all the more welcome from someone who has a catering background and notices the little things like our Top Level 5 Food Hygiene Award! Hope to welcome you back again. Best wishes.

The welcome was friendly and helpful. We had booked "King" for our stay and yes we did have a king sized bed but it was in a normal sized room! Everything seemed cramped and there was only room for one chair in this double room. The window seat did have a cushion in it, but that was of no use when the curtains were drawn. Toiletries were limited to one well used bottle of lemon scented gloop for both shower and shampoo, there were no tissues or hand cream provided. The TV worked via satellite but there were no instructions in the room and no help was forthcoming when we asked for assistance in tuning it. Breakfasts were well cooked and tasty. We ate in one evening, the menu was very limited and there were no hot dishes for vegetarians available. The fish that we did have was well cooked, but no vegetables were available, so it was salad or nothing. Food was served on brown painted rather utilitarian tables without tablecloths, easy to clean but not too elegant, especially for dinner. The hotel is very convenient for public transport but this does stop early in the evening so the return from Looe is a £10 taxi ride. The twisty road to Looe does not have a pavement, so walking would be dangerous after dark.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Since you gave us no opportunity to discuss your observations during your stay, we are pleased to address your points and air them with the tripadvisor community as every guest's personal experience and opinion is important to us.

We recognise that it's difficult to recover from initial disappointment if you book a room that doesn't meet your requirements regarding size. At Polraen we have two double, one king and two superking rooms. The superking rooms are £10-12 per night more expensive reflecting the increase in size. These are the only rooms we describe as spacious with a seating area with two upright leather chairs. Had we known about your views on the room size, we might have been able to offer an upgrade subject to availability.

Regarding toiletries: in line with our Green Acorn award for sustainable tourism, we have made a conscious decision to supply essential toiletries rather than a wide ranging selection and adopt a more environmental approach, using reusable ecopumps which use less packaging, and are less wasteful. Based on solicited feedback from our customers, the majority of our guests do not expect hand lotion. On the quality side, we provide cotton balls and cotton buds.

Our valley location compels us to have satellite tv and every room should have the TV instruction manual on the shelf next to the skybox. Having checked, this appears to have gone missing in the room occupied so thank you for now drawing this to our attention. However, under no circumstances would we be reluctant to provide assistance with the TV. What is most regularly recognised in the majority of reviews is our helpful, hospitable and responsive attitude - very much a hallmark of Polraen. As Martin and I are totally hands on, I am confident in knowing that no guest request is ever intentionally ignored.

Most guests value the facilities and warm informal happy relaxed atmosphere that prevails at Polraen. We endeavour to provide an environment and deliver facilities and service that, according to tripadvisor reviews, successfully meet and exceed most people's expectations. The Conservatory is not marketed or styled as an elegant fine dining destination restaurant. We have done away with table cloths to reflect this. It is open 4 nights of the week serving genuinely home made dishes supplemented with daily specials of fish and steak satisfying most popular tastes. The goats cheese dish which is always on the main menu is hot. Buttered vegetables can be ordered as a side dish.

We acknowledge we can't be all things to all people although we do try our hardest to please! I'm sorry we didn't fully satisfy your needs.

You there, young family!
Are you looking for the Monkey Sanctuary (a nearby attraction)?
Did you stop at the Polraen Country House to ask for directions?
Did you get in your car and drove on?

You should not have.
Go back and stay.
Bause you just missed the nicest hotel in Cornwall.

Not only is Polraen a beautiful old house. It is close to Looe but still lies in a lovely green valley, far away from the noise and bustle of the city. Although it is situated next to a road, you will not hear a car during the night, even with your windows open. The whole place breathes a quiet happyness which immediately puts an effortless smile on your face.

Speaking of smiles and effort - both were provided in abundance by your hosts, Gill and Martin who not only are immensely likeable people but really make you feel welcome and taken care of.

Staying at a hotel with small kids can sometimes be a pain in the hind-region, however this does not apply to the time you will have with the family at Polraen. We were travelling with our 2-year-old who not only was provided with a cot in a spacious, friendly family-room but fell also in love with the resident dog. Meals were not only delicious but also hassle-free and uncomplicated with our little one. Having raised two children, Gill and Martin not only approached our daughter with the confident and careless friendliness that usually wins over the hearts of munchkins but very obviously know what parents with small children need and want.

So, if you are looking for a wonderful place to stay with your (very) little ones, forget about the Monkey Sanctuary and stay at Polraen.

(You can still visit the monkeys later, it's just around the corner - like many other beautiful and interesting places nearby.)
