My husband and I stayed here with my mother-in-law in June for 3 nights.
We had a lovely welcome from Martin, who let us in slightly early, showed us to our rooms and got us a drink in the garden.
There is a very friendly and informal atmosphere, which means you can come and go when you want without worrying. You are given a room key and a front door key so you just let yourself in and out.
We found the hotel an ideal base for getting around. We drove most of the time, just for ease, but you can get the train or bus. It's about a 5 minute drive from Looe, and not far from other attractions like Polperro and the Lost Gardens of Helligan.
We also enjoyed the lounge which has three comfy leather sofas and a big TV.
Breakfasts were great - a good choice of fruit and cereals etc, although no pastries, and then a great cooked selection, which was never greasy and always delicious. Particularly liked the touch of spice on the mushrooms and the delicious fried bread.
My husband and I were in a king room, but didn't find the bed very large, although it was perfectly acceptable. The room had everything we needed and a great amount of storage.
The room was clean but we did notice some dust (a long trail of dust was hanging above our head when we first got in the shower) in both rooms, which my mother-in-law discussed with Gill before we left. She said she had hoped to do a "deep clean" in all rooms but hadn't got round to it because they were so busy.
The other small reason I have marked 4/5 instead of 5/5 was that the toiletries in the room were slightly disappointing. We also discussed this with Gill, and while we don't expect hand moisturiser or anything posh, it would be nice to have better quality separate shampoo and shower gel, rather than just a rather cheap quarter-full bottle of combined shower cream/shampoo, which we found when we arrived.
If the owners are looking for advice I just think this would create that extra special impression for people when they got to their rooms. I know they are into green/eco friendly measures so maybe you could find some sort of eco brand with recyclable bottles or something. It would really create that extra special impression.
But all in all this was a lovely place to stay, and I would definitely recommend it for those who want to see the sights of south east Cornwall, or for people who just want to have a nice relaxing weekend.
