we had 1 night there but had already booked 3. however as the weather was so terrible with the town flooded & the forecast terrible we decided to head home. The owner did charge for the full 3 nights £420. even the room rate was extortionate comparing the same room in the other parts of the town that were considerably cheaper. When we eventually found the place up a steep hill and various tight bends we were the only people there that was a little off putting. Reading the history of the owner where he had put his spaniel as head of PR we were pleased to leave but did expect a small reduction. the room was ok ish but not very good value.if you don't scratch your car getting into or out of the car park you'll be lucky.

Dear Des F Grimsby {“don't prebook”}

We are surprised to receive your review, let alone negative but we receive your comments positively and will readdress some you raised at the time and others you have not raised.

Firstly you told the Duty Reception when informing them of your early departure, that you were aware of the Terms and Conditions – per the Discount web site - and that you knew you were liable for the full cost of your stay. Despite that you had decided to leave early. The Receptionist was relieved with that, as there was obviously not going to be any dispute.

The Receptionist asked you why and you explained you had a week in France; the weather had been terrible there, it was not much better in England and you decided to go home. No other issues.

There was no criticism of the Hotel, Staff or Services – only the weather in France and England.

Many thousands of guests have easily and successfully found their way to the Fieldhead Hotel in Looe. There has never been a problem for any of them. We feel your description of Looe Roads does your assessment an injustice or possibly driving on Cornish Roads is a different experience for you, but has never, ever put anyone else off. We did have a delightful time in 2006 when a BMW 6 series car had a problem and that story is found on our web site.

On the night you stayed, four other rooms were occupied, were all in for dinner and three of those were business travellers, did not have breakfast and one sat behind you on the Restaurant Balcony - in glorious warm sunshine. It matters not to us, but to say you were alone is incorrect.

Yours is the first ever negative comment about Trudii – Head of PR. It is a JOKE!! Trudii is only a King Charles Spaniel. {She also highlights we are Pet Friendly} Normally people love her and love her company. To be derisory is uncharitable. If she is ever any issue at all – like for small children – she is not seen again while the guests are staying. We would normally give a man of your obvious intelligence, credit for “reading” between the lines as indeed we would expect you, as every other guest has done leaving our car park, to do so without wrecking your car on the way out. Again, never, ever happened before.

Finally, if you do not pre-book …..

We stayed at the fieldhead hotel very recently and can only say positive comments the room was very comfortable the full English and hospitality was very good, and the view was 2nd to none room 1. We had some very good weather tee shirts for mid October, and it was great to return to looe after 30+ years and see the place still hardly un changed, we look forward to returning again soon and will bring the family pet (dog friendly hotel) who missed us and we missed them,

We recently returned from our first visit to the Fieldhead hotel, hoping it won't be our last! We enjoyed every minute. Decided to have db&b, so glad we did. The food is excellent and service is perfect. Our waitress Ellen served us at breakfast and dinner and she was lovely as are all the staff. The setting is perfect,we stayed in room 15. Wonderful views and a lovely big balcony. Just sorry the weather wasn't nice enough to have breakfast out there, hopefully on our next visit it will be.

Looked forward so much to a second stay at the Fieldhead. We booked a superior room from our first visit. Quite honestly we did not find anything different from a "cheaper " room. We had a very small balcony and no way could we have both have had dinner on it. Unfortunately our bathroom backed on to another room, so when other visitors arrived back late and used their bathroom and again in the early hours we had to put up with all their bowel habits! We cannot fault the spotlessness of the hotel. The rooms are beautifully furnished and of a high standard. The beds are the most comfortable I have ever slept in, apart from home. The pool and gardens are lovely to use in high season. The staff are lovely. The standard of food is excellent but the evening meal, although very good, was not of the quality of our previous visit. Breakfast is very good, but a long wait ... but hey ho we are on holiday so there is no rush===
I think the owner/manager Julian should listen a bit more to what his clients have to say and smarten himself up a bit. If we have minor criticisms or suggestions he should act on them instead of just dismissing us out of hand.
If you also book online with all inclusive drinks and meals it would be quite nice if when you wanted your all inclusive drinks you were not treated as a bit of a nuisance.
We really wanted to book for New Year as we had really loved our previous stay and we also wanted to bring friends as well. Not sure now

Dear DEVONJOY, UK [“Return visit”]

We are very disappointed that you are so disappointed, especially after your visit in April 2013. We greatly value our return Guests as proven by you and many recent Reviewers.

We do fail to understand why guests prefer to book on line and get something they do not want when they can be old-fashioned and talk to the Hotel and get the room they do want. We are not a Clone Hotel.

This particular room has been part of the hotel for 35 years and has had thousands of Occupants in that time. I agree, not many have had dinner at the Table and Chairs on the Balcony, but many have had Breakfast and I can personally vouch for that.

This room is more expensive because of the size, décor, trouser press, safe, fridge, bed size and quality, bathroom fixtures and fittings and general overall quality and investment.

Bowel habits: We were not aware of that. Presumably they could hear yours. We will investigate this and get it remedied. This has never been an issue and thank you for drawing it to our attention.

Thank you for your mention of the beds being the most comfortable you have ever slept in.

We are interested in the comment that Julian should listen a bit more to what his clients have to say and smarten himself up a bit. As it is not possible on TripAdvisor, we will contact you by email to find out what his clients have to say about what for him to listen to as it is not stated here. As for smarten up: Julian has had the same dress style at The Fieldhead Hotel since 2006. Indeed, he does not wear a suit, as that is somewhat passé in this style of hotel. We wonder how he was different from April to encourage a return visit.

We remember there was an issue regards the Hotel music which was the same, with no issue, as the guests’ first visit, which resulted in the Guests’ switching off the Hotel sound system which remained off, for respect of these two guests for the duration of their stay and to the disappointment of the other 30 Residents.

We may appear not to listen – but we do.

The music chosen suits most of our guests. We cannot suit all tastes – at the same time. Even when it is switched off there were those who wondered what had happened to the music.

We are unaware of any “If we have minor criticisms or suggestions he should act on them instead of just dismissing us out of hand.” The guests have missed that opportunity here to state specifically what they were.

Was the other issue the Muesli? The Waiting Staff said they had said something, but unclear what the issue was. There is little point complaining to anyone unless their suggested improvement is stated. As it is, it is the same Chef’s recipe as it was in April. There are also jars of Nuts, Fruits and Seeds on the Buffet to adjust any Muesli. Chef also says, had the guests told her their specific ingredients, she would have done it for them – such is our versatility.

We listen – may not appear to – but we do.

The Guest Feed Back the guests completed, which is open to public viewing, makes no mention of any criticism that could be dismissed out of hand. None of the observations made here were reported “to Julian” during their stay. Our Feed-Back Form does specifically say that any issue should be raised at the time, as after departure is too late.

Drink service is never a bit of a nuisance. We are delighted, for the second time, the Guests took advantage of our £25.00 per day inclusive drinks. On full selling price the guests consumed, during their 4 day stay, more than double that. i.e. 2.5 for the price of one. We have no issue with that but sorry the guests felt embarrassed to keep on asking for another drink, but that is called “Ordering”, not nuisance.

We are all but full for New Year. The room these guests stayed in is already booked by a Returning Guest specifically requesting this room, as is the previous room they stayed in. For further but limited availability, please contact the hotel direct.

We really look forward to seeing you again. Guests’ friends are always welcome too. As for New Year with Looe being voted the best place in the Country outside London to be at New Year, possibly book early to avoid disappointment. It is, as these guests appreciate, great value and includes Gala Dinners and lots of drinks.

Oh my goodness!!! This review quite takes our breath away. I take this Review very personally.

Dear Ortwin Georg Urban [and Family] Nottuln, Germany “one week in heaven”

Ortwin saw us and made Friends with us on FaceBook and subsequently booked - three or four months in advance.

We are delighted they enjoyed their stay. They also took a number of photos, which are here on TripAdvisor of their Full English Breakfast and the view from their Breakfast table.

It will be our absolute pleasure to look after you all again Ortwin should you return to The Westcountry.

It is also so rewarding to see you already have 6 “Helpful” TripAdvisor votes.

Thank you again for the special review of your stay.

Very best wishes

Thank you to everyone at the Fieldhead Hotel for another lovely stay. So often, places disappoint on a second visit, but not here. We were greeted as friends, which epitomises the feeling of this hotel where all the staff have time to give to visitors. Views from the bedroom unsurpassed and the good size balcony with table, chairs and loungers is a real boon. Rooms are well equipped, with generous tea and coffee and toiletries. The food is exceptional and the variety over four evening meals quite remarkable. Beautifully presented and generous quantities - and friendly helpful service. And I must mention the table in the window which was much appreciated. Plenty of choice at breakfast too.
