“Fabulous location and service with a smile!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2010

Myself and my boyfriend decided to go to Newquay for our first break away together - After looking at lots of hotels, we came across sunnyside - which i'm so glad we did! The time we booked the hotel was doing a fantastic offer with a free upgrade to a see view room and discounted rates, which encouraged us to book. Arriving at the hotel - checking in wasn't till 3 pm but we were so keen to beat traffic - we made good time and arrived late morn early lunch time, we went inside to see if there was any chance of booking in early. We where greeted by a friendly chap called Steve on reception who was very happy to help and said our room was ready. The room had a fantastic view and the location was just brilliant-just a hop skip and a jump to the town centre but out of the hustle and bustle of it all at the same time! We had a FANTASTIC holiday - all the staff where very friendly and helpful but I have to name drop good old Steve who was fantastic - very helpful and nothing was a problem if you needed any help or advice on where to go! I would definitely recommend Sunyside to family and friends and would stay again if we ever visited Newquay for another holiday. The sea view room was a good size with en-suite facilities, if I had to be negative about anything -it was a shame you didn't get breakfast included in your stay as that would be the icing on the cake - as you have to pay extra per day and pre order breakfast - but apart from that - nothing to complain about! Thank u to all at Sunnyside making our first break away together a special and memorable one!!

I booked and paid for a budget hotel, and got much more than expected. I felt the price I was offered for a sea view room was very reasonable, the room was perfectly adequate, comfortable and everything was ready and clean on arrival. The loction, in conjunction to the town centre was perfect (away from the noise, but 1 minute walk from it all), and the view is spectacular. The beach is a stones throw away and there is a lovely area of grass just across the road, if you want to chill out, kick a ball etc.

The staff were awesome! So friendly, informative and responsive. Always giving advice and offering support in organising activities, restaurants etc. If you leave them with a task, you can rest assured it will be acted upon. The same goes for the guys in the surf shop attached to the hotel. Always going the extra mile to make your stay and activites more enjoyable and stress free.

In particular, I want to mention "the Dutch girl", Fleur (excuse my spelling), as she got some stick below. I was honestly shocked at how informative and friendly she was over the phone when I booked. Everything was explained clearly, so there were no surprises. The same service was experienced in person, and she even went out of her way to make our stay more enjoyable on her days off...always offering advice and assistance.

If you are considering a stay in Newquay, I would fully recommend this hotel.

We stayed here on a stag weekend recently and cannot fault the place. The Hotel is on the front, overlooking the beach. Not only that but it is in the centre of everything, just around the corner from the bars and town centre.

The hotel itself is clean, the bunk rooms were on the small side but more than adequate for what we needed, and having said that the standard rooms were much roomier. The décor is modern in the reception, restaurant and bar areas.

Also, got to give a mention to Steven who works there, he was on the bar most nights of our stay, was a genuinely friendly guy when we went in there, and saved the day for us on departure when we needed to arrange the online check in for the flights and to print our boarding passes!

Would defiantly recommend and would stay here again!

As the best man organising a stag do in newquay I was looking for a cheap but comfortable place to stay for our party. I got all that and more at hotel sunnyside. The location was perfect, a stones throw from the beach and the nighlife hotspots and the staff were friendly and very helpful. A special mention must go to Stephen and Jason who kept our weekend running smoothly. All in all it was a perfect stag do location but I would also recomend it for any guest looking for a bargain.

I really dont know where to start with this hotel that should be called a hostel, & even then it needs improving! I booked directly with the hotel, a twin room for 1 night & was quoted £100 for room with no breakfast so I requesed a discount as we were already booked in as part of a group for more nights & I agreed a price of £90 no breakfast. Our room was appalling so where to start, no toileties bar liquid soap in a unmovable dispenser, tiny bathroom one light not working , no lockers so no reading lights & one of the 2 overhead lights not working, popcorn in my bed & under the beds 2 windows dont close properly Nylon (yes really) sheets on both beds 2 pairs of underpants & 2 pairs of socks in wardrobe, I could go on.
Of course we were bitterly dissapointed when we saw our room & asked to be moved & were assured that we would but not til the next day so we got some cottonish sheets & agreed to that but the shift changed & next day were told that we would not be moved as "all the rooms were the same " As it turned out there were "better rooms" but we never got one. Someone sorted out some of our complaints like fixing 1 light & giving us somewhere to plug in the kettle & a 2nd towel each, which turned out to be dirty (twice). Now I have to stop but we still had more problems. The only nice thing we can say is that Steven & Jason were nice guys who tried to look after us but the Dutch girl was totally indifferent

We are genuinely sorry for the issues raised in this review. Whilst I understand that the rest of the coach tour enjoyed a pleasurable stay with us, I appreciate how these issues prevented a similar experience for this individual guest.

The housekeeping issues are unacceptable and have been discussed at length with our housekeeper. The fact that the wardrobe and the area under the bed were not checked is extremely disappointing. Measures have been put in place to avoid a similar problem in the future. The pop corn was actually found under the bed, rather than ‘in the bed’, but nevertheless, this is a merited cause for complaint.

The light bulb was reported as ‘going’ on entrance to the room. This was replaced as soon as it was reported. The towels were not unclean, just perhaps dated and not to the guest’s expectations in terms of quality. We have taken the towels in question out of use. We detail on our website our policy concerning the provision of one towel per guest. We also detail the fact that we do not supply toiletries. The nylon mix sheets have also been taken out of use in light of this comment to avoid further guest dissatisfaction.

We try to highlight in our marketing the fact that we are a budget hotel. We honestly feel our policies concerning towels, toiletries, and facilities such as reading lamps, are reflective of the style of hotel we operate. However, reading lamps and additional towels are always available on request.

The rate detailed in the review is not correct. All our rates are on a room only basis. In this instance, a sea view room was booked at the tariff rate of £40.00 per person with a £5.00 per supplement for a cooked breakfast. There was an obvious confusion concerning rates, as the guest arrived under the impression that a dinner, bed, and breakfast rate had been booked and paid for. We do not offer such a rate.

Again, whilst certain aspects of the review may be contestable, I would like to thank the guest for bringing these issues to our attention. Put simply, the standard of housekeeping experienced by the guest in this particular room is not what we, or our guests, have come to expect. We will take this feedback and learn from it. We extend our apologies to the guest once again.

Our group of 14 stayed at Sunnyside for a stag weekend in mid June. The whole experience was first-class and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone else trying to arrange a similar group holiday.

The hotel's main attraction is its fantastic location. It's right in the centre of Newquay, and you can walk to all the main bars/clubs, the beach and the high street within a few minutes. Despite being central, the street is still pretty quiet because it's not rammed with bars/clubs/takeaways like the next streets along. The location makes it really easy to coodinate a group of blokes whose natural instinct is to wander off at random!

We stayed in the bunk rooms - as expected they were small and simple, but did the job. Beds were fine and everything was clean. Ensuite shower room was a bit cosy but worked (did have a couple of reports of hot water running out in the early afternoon though.) TV with Freeview worked fine, reception was good and we could walk bits of World Cup while getting ready.

Breakfast was decent quality and value, and the dining room is bright and clean.

Staff were really friendly and helpful: Stephen, Jason, Fleur and Bob were all great (apologies if I've missed anyone out.) They gave good advice on restaurants and bars, were really accommodating when we watched the World Cup in the bar, and they even stopped for a chat when we bumped into them around town.

There's a well-kept green outside the front of the hotel where you can relax or kick a ball around if you're blessed with good weather, and you can walk down to the sea in a couple of minutes.

We used Newquay Surfing School next door and would highly recommend them. They instructors were friendly and relaxed, and pitched the session just right for a stag group. It's really convenient to meet in the hotel lobby, walk next door for wetsuits, and then walk a couple of minutes down to the beach. Prices for groups were good too.

The whole group was impressed by the choice of hotel, and I'd definitely go back for another group holiday. I wouldn't go take the family, but for groups and young people looking for a good time I doubt you'll find better.

Warning - don't try to session-drink the Cornish Rattler...

Possibly the best location in Newquay, 2 minutes walk to the Walkabout bar but far enough to not get disturbed by any late night noise from nearby clubs. Overlooking the beach, which were again a 2 minute walk down some steps onto the sandy beach. Rooms were decent enough, it is a budget hotel, so didn't expect too much....however we were pleasantly surprised; very clean and no unpleasant surprises, like some hotels we have previously visited! We stayed in a tri-bed bunk room which was spacious, with a decent flat screen tv for company. All the staff we met were very pleasant and helpful, thought the idea to leave room keys (at night) with the staff at reception was good (its 24hr reception)
