Came over from Ireland with 3 friends for a weekend of surfing, drinking and general shenanigans and was recommended Sunnyside Hotel by a friend. The rooms were basic but clean with enough room, the decor for the reception and bar area downstairs was very inviting and the service from all the staff we encountered especially 'Lee the manager' was fantastic. But I would recommend this place on the location alone its so good! Right in the heart of the town, 2 minute walk to the beach, shops and clubs as well as Newquays most underated attraction... the aquarium!!

Great weekend, Great hotel.

Having arrived at Hotel Sunnyside in cold and miserable weather my boyfriend and i were pleased to be greeted with a warm and comfortable room. All the staff during our stay were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friend and family.

I stayed at the ho(s)tel sunnyside with a group of friends in August on a stag weekend and although initally impressed at the reception area my mood soon changed when we ascended to the first floor and surveyed our pathetic single room with barely enough space for the bunk bed and cheap mattress, barely there wallpaper, soiled threadbare carpet and broken 14" tv attached to the wall. The rest of our party had booked out two other quad rooms but hadn't faired much better, slightly more space but equally tired looking wallpaper and bedding. We were so disappointed with our accommodation that we seriously wished to move elsewhere but reconsidered given the inconvenience and disruption and were discouraged becasue of the the uncertainty surrounding the return of our deposit.
It is no surprise the images they use to promote the 'hotel' on the website are those of the reception, bar area and standard rooms which have clearly benefited from some recent redecoration but sadly the management must have run out of cash soon after completion of the ground floor. Indeed, the shared dorm accomodation is of such an inferior standard to the ground floor decor that you can't help thinking the management are having a joke at your expense! This place would more accurately be described as a glorified hostel with the main redeeming feature being it's proximity to the beach and the comfortable bar area. Despite this Steve the guy on the desk was friendly and the restaurant did a good breakfast. However, if you have the misfortune to be booked into room 24 or similar I'm sure you'll wish you'd not be taken in by the misleading photos on the ho(s)tels website..

ssh57, Manager at Hotel Sunnyside Newquay, responded to this reviewResponded 3 January 2011

After our many positive reviews in 2010, I am very sorry to read of the reviewer’s disappointment with this particular stay.

Over winter 2010 we have carried out an extensive redecoration programme to bring a brighter and more contemporary appearance to our bunk rooms. As we do not have a ‘room 24’ I am unsure to which specific room the review relates, however, we have included all our older style rooms in this work.

As you will observe from our website, the concept of Hotel Sunnyside is to offer simple, affordable, central accommodation. As a result, space is maximized in our bunk rooms, however, I do not believe that we shy away from this fact. We are as honest as possible in all of our marketing. Yes, we have a new bar and reception area, and do show off these facilities. But we also provide images of our bunk rooms on our website, so certain comments concerning our marketing, I feel, are unfair.

All rooms at Hotel Sunnyside are private (not shared as indicated in the review) with en-suite facilities. We also cannot offer kitchen facilities for guest use. As such, we refrain from labeling ourselves as a hostel. Perhaps the mix of accommodation of bunk rooms and conventional hotel rooms does find us somewhere in the middle of the two, but we’re proud of this fact!

As the vast majority of previous guests at Hotel Sunnyside have testified, our concept works well for an enjoyable visit to Newquay on a budget. I would encourage readers to take a quick look at our other reviews to gain perhaps a more balanced impression of the hotel.

I extend my sincere apologies to the reviewer. The standard of the booked accommodation at the time of their stay did clearly not meet expectations. We acknowledge we do not get everything 100% perfect 100% of the time, but we do try our best and are always willing to listen and resolve any problem or concern a guest has during their stay with us. Certainly the mention of the security deposit being a reason not to advise us of dissatisfaction is unfounded.

Went to Hotel Sunnyside for a Stag Do. After researching based on our budget this hotel came on top of the usual hostels that some stag companies recommend.

The location is brilliant, what a view, right on the cliff top with a walk down to the beach. A few minutes walk to the center of pubs and bars, but the hotel is not noisy because of this. Wouldn't recommend the hotel for a romantic get away, but for what we needed it for it was brilliant.

Myself and my teenage son (14) stayed at Sunnyside for 3 nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend for the sole purpose of surfing and enjoying Newquay. Right from the start we felt very welcomed by the staff, especially Steve, who came up to advise that a bigger room had become available and would we like it, so we moved into a twin room with ensuite at no extra cost and this was on the Bank Holiday! This is a budget hotel with style, class and a very capable and quality team running it. Location wise its a little difficult to find and parking can be a bit difficult, however its only a 5 minute walk from major town car parks and the actual location is perfect, overlooking Towan Beach and with the Newquay Surf School right next door you can't go wrong. All in all we had a fantasic time and will be returning next year. Highly recommended!
