“Fawlty Towers made real! Never again. For...”
Reviewed 16 February 2010

Fawlty Towers made real! Never again. For a hotel listed on Travel Zoo I am disgusted. The rooms - in fairness - are a work in progress, but the advertised gym no longer exists, the sauna 'has been unserviceable since November last year' (staff quote), and the food is...disgusting! Dirty forks, cold plates, and shockingly cheap methods, recipes and content. We have endured soggy and 'plastic' pasta, congealed 'steak pie' (where the pastry never meets the meat until it is delivered to the table!), the 'fruit salad' is a chopped apple, the cheese and biscuits served with a wet and tired, limp celery on a wet plate. The 'pasta bolognaise' lacked any sense of flavour and the vegetables (yes, bolognaise comes with sweet potato and runner beans - both soggy and tepid, so it seems!) which possibly suited the majority of guests whose dietry and dental needs were less than 'al dente'. The whole setup lacked any effort and reeked of 'cost cutting over standards'. The car park - inadequate and with many trip hazards - and 'entertainment' (again suited to those of more 'mature' vintage. A very very disappointing experience and not at all recommended...not at all representative of their website. The Cornish Tourist Board and Travelzoo will be advised of this pathetic example of hospitality...with a 'chef' that proves school dinners are not at the bottom of the culinary food chain! That said, the visible staff were amiable and helpful, but the standards behind the scene simply awful. Stay well away...sorry to say.

Good location for touring Cornwall, this hotel is very much in the mould of the old fashioned seaside hotel. Don't let that put you off as the food was very good, the service was excellent and the rooms clean and spacious. Value for money it is unbeatable.

This was the best Christmas visit we have ever had at the Pentire, in the past it has been very good but this time it pulled out all the stops. The food, the accommodation, the friendliness of the staff and the entertainment provided over the Christmas period could not be faulted.

Over the last few years the hotel has been in the process of upgrading, something which takes time as they must also stay open for business, therefore there has been the occasional glitch with doors not fitting properly and the plumbing misbehaving, but this is only to be expected and we took it as part of the fun of the holiday.

If you are inclined to be critical, picky and over reactive then this is not the hotel for you, but a coach load of 41 people agreeing that they have had a wonderful time and looking forward to their next visit, cannot be wrong. These are the kind of people who make the efforts of the hotel worth while.

Meanwhile we too look forward to our next visit as we know that standards will not slip and will probably be even higher. I shall also take a swimming costume as I kicked myself for not being able to avail myself of the pool and jacuzzi facilities!

on booking we were asked if any dietary needs ,as my wife is coeliac they wood tell the chief. have heard this before ( just leave out the gravy no bread etc) but no he made a gluten free meal each day with bread as well. the room we stayed in was fair ( needs to be updated ) but had a look in one being upgraded , hope we can afford to say here again in that room ( if prices go up) the staff were very helpful and the yes the hotel is a bit tired but the improvements speak for them self . soon when all rooms and public areas are redone this will be a great hotel to stay in newquay .

This has to be the worst hotel i have ever stayed in, admittedly i would never choose to stay here to begin with but it was booked on our behalf, but at the rate of £25 inc dinner per night you cant expect much
The rooms to begin with our so tatty, the bathroom just horrid, holes in the doors, tiles falling off and just plain dirty. the comunal area like the stairs and corriders are even more uninviting and smell terrible.
The food was probably the worst bit though, menu choice said its all, starter choice was something like, a glas of fruit juice or some soup and the mains were just microwave food, which would explain why after ordering each course it then appears in less then a minute!!!
We nicknamed it the retire hotel whilst there because other than us all the guest were on bus tours and of retirement age.
All in all if your considering going to Newquay and under the age of 60 do not stay here, you only need to drive past to see why, i really cant understand some of the previous reviews.

Me, my wife and 13month old daughter stayed at the Pentire Hotel for 4 nights in September 2009. It was very good value for money. The staff were very friendly and couldnt do enough for us. Very nice sea views of Fistral Beach (about 10 mins walk) The food was nice and a decent variety. Lots of parking available. We were by far the youngest there (were both 29). The pool and sauna is very nice.

We have just return home after spending a third holiday at this hotel, each year it gets better, and a lot of money is being invested back into the refurbishment of this hotel.
The staff are very helpful and polite.the food is excellant and plenty of it, the pool, patio and games room are very nice also the new decking area at the front is a great improvement.
We have already booked again for September 2010.
