Pennasville Holidays
Reviewed 29 August 2012

On our third visit to Holywell Bay, we decided to try out Pennasville Holidays - what a place, its location speaks for itself. More freedom for my children. Very comfortable cottage (3 bed with a view). We did not find the need to go out a whole week as we were totally relaxed and occupied with the stunning views of Holywell Bay. The games room and nearby fun park kept my boys busy. We spent hours body boarding under the watchful eye of the lifeguards. What more can you ask?

Room Tip: Choose a cottage with a good view!!

This was our first holiday in Cornwall for many years & I had searched long & hard for a suitable beachside property with sea views that accepted dogs. I stumbled across Pennasville almost by accident and I'm so pleased I did! I chose no.11 because it was an end property & also the closest to the beach we could get with a dog. We arrived early at about 12.30 & as the property had been empty the previous week it was ready for us which was brilliant. We had a 3 bed cottage which was more than ample for the 3 of us but definitely nice to have the extra room which we used for cases etc. We had a problem with a dirty carpet in the kitchen/sitting room so my husband went up to the main house to let them know & within a few minutes the owners were at our cottage trying to sort out the problem.
The view from the 2 bedrooms we used was stunning - my son could lie in bed & look at the sea & dunes. Our bed was in the wrong position to do this but I could hear the sea at night which was lovely.

We had everything we needed in the cottage but as someone else has said there was possibly too much furniture! I think perhaps the large chair needn't have been there then we would have had more room to move around (& somewhere for our dog's bed).
We had a lovely patio/garden area which having a dog would have been perfect if it was fenced completely, however it wasn't too much of a problem as Mack had a long lead so we just attached it to the boundary fence & he could mooch around happily. (Our next door neighbour had put windbreaks to enclose his area so his dogs could have a bit more freedom) Mack was in paradise with all the rabbits & I have to say they didn't bother us at all. To be honest in this sort of location all sorts of wildlife is to be expected & I really liked seeing them around.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pennasville - it's perfect for a beach holiday, I loved the fact that there were no noisy swimming pools or clubhouse etc. it's just a very relaxing place. I also loved the walk along the path to the beach every day it is just lovely and the beach & dunes are simply stunning.
Our weather wasn't brilliant but we had some sunshine so managed a few days on the beach, sitting in our own little cove next to the river (perfect for our rather naughty puppy!) Our 14 year old son loved bodyboarding & sand surfing and had a really good time.

Holywell Bay is a wonderful unspoilt paradise and we will definitely return. We would also happily stay at Pennasville again as we had a nice cottage in a brilliant location!

My husband, 6yr old son and myself had an awesome stay at Pennasville. On arrival the houses do look a bit bleak with their grey pebbledash exterior but inside they are comfortable, clean and well equipped. The bedrooms are clean, bright and with comfortable but firm beds and my husband is a big fan of the HD Tv all aiding to a comfortable stay. In other reviews people noted the electricity meter and having to pay for it....but in a whole week we used only £3!
Having stayed near Holywell Bay previously we choose Pennasville for its location and we werent disappointed. The properties are just behind the sand dunes and we could hear and see the sea from the double bedroom.
We will definately return soon.

You cannot fault this location: on the edge of the beach next to a pretty river, and within staggering distance of a good dog-friendly pub (St. Piran's Inn). Only problem with the location is that you have to go to the top of the highest dune for even the chance of a phone signal or 3G connection - a plus for some, but in this technological age.... There is Wifi in the games room, but I think it should be available in the cottages too.

Now, the accommodation....

It is not dog-friendly, it is dog-tolerating. You are not allowed to let them upstairs and they are technically not even allowed onto your own patio area off-lead. I can accept the upstairs restriction (although you are paying extra for each dog anyway), but there needs to be a fence around you own outside area so that you can at least allow them to lie-out. The lounge is not large and is rather overcrowded with furniture; dogs need some space!

On the subject of rules, they are rather over-emphasized which gives a somewhat unfriendly feel to the complex. This is augmented by the stark aesthetic of the buildings, and the minimal face-to-face contact with the owners.

Amusingly, when the office is shut (it's only open for a while in the morning) you have to go up to the house, or a list of phone numbers is supplied...no phone signal?! How about an intercom phone?

The exterior is in need of a re-paint, preferably in soft pastels to detract from the prison-like appearance of the row facing the beach-access. The interior walls are white-painted breeze-blocks, even in the bedroom. The over-bed lights are small strip-lights, and the lounge carpet looked grubby. It is well equipped, but you do have to put your own bedding on, and if you are there 2 weeks you don't get any clean bedding (and you are not allowed to use your own, according to the rules?!).

When we went it was cold for June and the cottage felt very cold throughout. There is a storage heater which is covered by the cost, but they had all been centrally turned off. The electric fire in the lounge involved regular meter feeds and was inadequate for the whole cottage.

All-in-all, 'Penance-ville' needs some improvement to warrant the cost - even with the location.

We stayed at Pennasvile for a week between 2nd & 9th June 2012. We have stayed at Holywell Bay 3 times now but this was our first stay at Pennasville. Although the accomodation is fairly basic (altough fully equiped with tv, dvd player, microwave, toaster and even a dish washer) and a little dated, it is spotlessly clean and comfortable and cosy. And of course the main attraction is it's fantastic location. Practically on the sand dunes and close to the pub.

In my opinion, service was great and very friendly. We arrived on site early (10am) and were told our accomodation would be available in the next half hour (due to being unoccupied the previous week, I believe) and we were in our accomodation by 10.30am. We had a problem with a leaking shower that evening which we reported and this was fixed promptly. We were left a basket of complimentary tea/coffee sachets etc and biscuits which was most welcome as our shopping order wasn't arriving until 4pm.

The main reason for booking Pennasville has to be the location. It is so close to the sand dunes and beautiful beach at Holywell Bay that it is hard to beat. There are a selection of houses from 2 - 4 beds. It is worth noting that not all of the houses have enclosed gardens (if you have dogs or children that are likely to wander). To be honest though, with the beach so close, who needs a garden? The bonus for us is that they accept dogs although if you are not a dog lover there are cottages that are completely dog free. The accomodation was basic but spotlessly clean and price wise they are very reasonable. We have been before at the start of the season when there was a bit of a musty smell but this year there was nothing. When you book you are given clear instructions about the collecting of the key and about the electric meter, there is also a helpful folder in the property with other information. A previous reviewer seemed disappointed by not seeing the owners. To us this is not a problem, in fact it is common in many of the self catering places we have stayed at. If I had to say anything slightly negative it would be that in the 4 bed houses the kitchens are very small so if you wanted to cook for a big family you might struggle and in the house we were in, there is no heating upstairs so if it drops cold at night you need to use the extra blankets provided. Apart from that they are brilliant for a seaside holiday in a wonderful location.

We stayed at Pennasville for a week between 9th-16th July 2011 for 4 adults. Upon arrival we found a notice outside the owners house advising us to go straight to our cottage and let ourselves in with the key that had been left in the keysafe outside the cottage. We arrived just before 3pm when we could check in and was expecting the owners to at least welcome us. There is plenty of parking outside the cottages and the location is fabulous. It is right on the beach with incredible views over Holywell Bay. Once inside the cottage it became apparent that the cottage is dated but very spacious with a decent sized garden and undercover patio area-great for bbq's. We had to make up the beds with the bed linen that had been left for us and open the windows/doors as the cottage smelt a bit musty. You need to have some £1 coins at the ready as the electricity is payable via the meter in the cottage. The toilet in the en suite was not working properly and it took several flushes for waste to be disposed of. We spent the whole week here at Pennasville without ever meeting the owners which we felt was somewhat rude considering we had booked this well in advance and thought they would make the effort to see we settled in ok and there was no problems. Overall though the location overshadows these disadvantages as its a stones throw from the beach and has spectacular views of the dunes and sea. The two double rooms have balconies and the cottages were spacious. I would deffinately go back, even just for the location but it also helped that we had sunny weather everyday that we could sit outside, go to beach and have BBQs. You are paying more for the location, but dont expect great service or modern facilities. There is also a big playpark for children onsite and a games room. Also you may need to be aware that there are a lot of wild rabbits about but they were no bother but there was also a lot of rabbit droppings around which might be a concern if you have children playing outside. Overall a great holiday base in a fantastic location and just what we were after.
