“LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION”
Reviewed 30 July 2011

Ideal location overlooking Fistral Beach. We stayed in a family room overlooking the ocean with fantastic views and the sound of the waves were very relaxing. Room was slightly basic as we had to ask for a fridge, and wi-fi could only be picked up in one corner. The Hotel was kid friendly, but we would have struggled to have kept our two amused if the weather had been bad. Would recommend an organised kids club for a couple of hours each day. Staff were very helpfull and accomadating nothing was too much trouble, however the resturaunt staff could do with extra training to keep focused on customer care we did not have a good expierience on the first night in the main resturaunt, fortunately the general manager Veryan was on duty in the resturaunt and intervened on our issues and even ended up keeping our kids amused! The following night we ate in the hotels other resturaunt and after outlining our ground rules we had a superb dinner. Would recommend and we hope to return again later in the summer.

The Headland Hotel commands a premier location at Fistral Beach. The building is grand, and its abundant public spaces were comfortable and inviting. My friend and I had a terrific rate on a twin room (two twin beds), but based on other reviews, I would guess that the rate was because they were unrenovated rooms. The beds were terribly uncomfortable, and the bathroom was in need of modernization. Noises from the plumbing were horrifyingly amusing. If the room had been one of the renovated ones, I'm sure my review would be 5 of 5.

The food served in the restaurants was fresh and tasty. Breakfast is excellent each day. Service throughout the hotel and its restaurants was outstanding. Overall, I'd recommend a stay here -- just get a renovated room.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us, in particular our wonderful location and breakfast! I have passed on your comments about the 'outstanding service' you received to the whole team, who were very happy to hear your views.

Indeed you are correct in your assumption of the bedroom you stayed in being one of our older rooms - it is one of the 13 remaining rooms that are due for a complete renovation this winter. Once this has been completed, all of the rooms in the hotel will have been redecorated in the last two and half years, which is a fantastic achievement by our very hard working Maintenance and Painting teams.

Our new bathrooms we are installing have large walk in power showers (with 1ft diameter shower heads), double ended baths, under floor heating, and de-misting mirrors. Some guests have even commented that they would be happy to move into the bathroom permanently!

I do hope we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back in the future, where we will try and ensure you have one of the beautiful and recently renovated rooms.

Best wishes, Veryan Armstrong, General Manager

We only spent one night here but were very favourably impressed. We checked in a bit early but there was no hassle about this. On the contrary we were treated with great helpfulness and courtesy by reception, and this level of service was maintained throughout, the staff all very much working together as a team. Plus it's a magnificent building, for the most part well maintained. And the food is excellent with beautiful view of the sea from the diningroom. Our only complaint would be that the plumbing in the next bedroom was a bit noisy.

We stayed at the Headland in the hotel in a Coastal Superior family room for 1 night followed by 3 in the Headland Cottages. This was a return visit with our 2 children. Disappointed to see the play park has disappeared and astounded that in the 4 years since we last stayed there the cottages still don't have ANY Internet connection either wired or wireless... 4 years ago I commented on this, the hotel has free wifi but the cottages nothing. For the sake of some wiring or repeaters this could be solved. Food on our first night in the hotel was good and service from Oliver outstanding. He is a credit to the hotel and service industry. The cottages are nice to stay in but in a 3 bed cottage you would expect more than 1 TV. We stayed in Huers 6. Both pools feel tired now but we saw the plans for the spa development. If you go and get great weather and love the surf you'll love it. In the rain it all feels that bit more tired and the shortcomings are emphasised.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay in the hotel and cottages. I have given Oliver your feedback on his service, and he was most delighted! We believe he is a star in the food & beverage team, and it is lovely to read that a guest wholeheartedly agrees with us.

The children's adventure playground was removed over six years ago, to give more room for the football pitch, boules area and croquet lawn, but we are sorry that you miss it so much! The indoor 'Polka Dot Playroom' was renovated recently, and after the renovation work we are doing this winter, there should be a new 'teenage room' and children's play area inside the hotel.

We very much agree that Wi-Fi is an important everyday service that people expect to be available everywhere they go. When the cottages were re-designed in the mid nineties, internet was still a relatively new concept, and I don’t think that Wi-Fi had even been invented! We did offer guests the option of connecting via a dial-up cable in each cottage when they were first built, which was the height of internet sophistication. The cottages were built very sturdily indeed with granite, and unfortunately it is not simply a case of 'some wiring or repeaters' that can solve the problem, as Wi-Fi doesn’t like travelling through granite! We have had numerous surveys completed to see what can be done to rectify this, but without creating masses of unsightly cabling above ground, or digging up the beautiful granite main street, is it a quick fix job to complete. This winter, when the hotel and cottages are closed for six weeks, we are more confident than ever before that we can solve this conundrum! It is something we really want to do!

I have noted your comment about more televisions in the cottages - each cottage is indeed only equipped with one flat screen television in the main lounge area. I am sorry that you do not feel this is enough. This is one of the first comments about the lack of televisions we have heard, and we will most definitely monitor feedback to see if there is a demand for us to install more television points in the larger cottages. It would be helpful if you could contact me to let me know how many televisions might be suitable for the three bedroom cottages?

Our renovation work in the indoor pool area this winter will bring lovely new additions that can be enjoyed in rainy weather - a new sauna, scented steam room, aromatherapy showers, new hot pool, bubbling steps, rain curtains....it will be fantastic!

We look forward to welcoming you back again I hope, when we shall do our utmost to arrange wonderful weather so that we appear at our sparkling best.

Kind regards, Veryan Armstrong, General Manager

We have looked at the Headland many times on our regular visits to Newquay and this time as a special treat decided to try it - and what a treat it was!!

From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome; being shown around the Hotel facilities by the Receptionist whilst our bags were taken to the room. The Housekeeping Service was superb, the Restaurant excellent (and what a view) and the Staff - every single one of them - were helpful and friendly at all times.

I think this Hotel offers wonderful value for money and after some 20 trips to Newquay over the years spread across perhaps 10 Hotels, we shall never look anywhere else again.
