We have stayed several times now at the hotel and in the Headland Cottages, there is a reason we keep coming back for 'storm watchers' 'short breaks' 'recharging' - it never fails to delight
'We' have expanded over the years from two of us plus a dog enjoying excellent coastal walks, roaring log fires, delicious food and wine and indulging in fantastic views from our excellent hotel rooms to.... well.....Us and friends, a geriatric dog, a 7 year old and a 1 year old and staying in the self catering cottages and STILL it has somehow managed to be a relaxing experience, no mean feat with our group!
The cottages are excellent for our family needs, so well equipped, stunningly located, a real indulgent home from home. Our daughter was beside herself with excitement and our son had the best time charging round exploring. As ever the service in the hotel was outstanding, the food was gorgeous and being able to relax with the kids (yes they did make it possible) was just brilliant. Love the new spa pool facility and cannot wait to see the next phases.
Highly recommend this place to all - couples on retreat and families in the cottages - just perfect!

Room Tip: If you can - go for the sea views in the hotel, we will never forget indulging in a bottle of red, l...

How lovely to read your thoughts on the Hotel and Cottages. It is always so nice to hear from our guests and how we have made your stay so enjoyable. I have had great pleasure in reading about your personal experience with the Hotel and the Cottages. It was especially rewarding to hear that even with a dog and two little ones in tow we were still able to make you feel relaxed!
Upon your return, we will have our lovely new spa and gym which will provide yet more enjoyment and relaxation, and it will be our pleasure to welcome you all back to the Hotel in the near future. Best wishes to you and your family from everyone at The Headland

As you come up the driveway the Headland is both imposing and welcoming, with a great position looking across the sea and Fistral Bay. The high ceilings and wide open spaces inside give the hotel a special atmosphere.

We stayed for 3 nights in a suite with a dual aspect window and lots of space. We had dinner in the restaurant on 2 of the 3 nights and thought the food to be excellent, with friendly service. One one of the nights the front desk gave us a very good recommendation for a local seafood restaurant. The location for surfing on Fistray Bay is of course perfect.

There were a few issues which we think could be improved. We found the bed to be quite hard and uncomfortable. We took lunch in the Terrace restaurant on the day we arrived and the service was very slow, and a bit odd as well. We gave up waiting for coffees but, of course, they were on the bill. As no-one came back to take the bill we ended up writing on it to ask for the deduction. The charges did not show up on our final room account so that was dealt with, but a proactive interested team would not simply have left it at that but would have spoken with us later after seeing the note on the bill. Finally, after dinner we sat on the comfortable chairs in the lounge area outside the dining room but apparently no drinks are served there. Reception sent me off to the Terrace Bar to get a drink.

In summary we do think this is a lovely hotel, with some very nice staff but lets itself down a little (hence 4 stars rather than 5).

Thank you very much for your comments and taking time to review the Hotel. We are extremely proud of the Hotel and it surrounding areas and we realise how fortunate we are to boast such wonderful views for our guests to enjoy. The Hotel still remains grand in its appearance both inside and out. I am very pleased to hear you feel the same way.
I was disappointed however, to hear about your experience in the Terrace and the Lounge. These matters have been looked into and all members of staff have been reminded to be attentive and proactive to all guests at all times including the busy periods.
Again I would like to thank you for posting your comments and we hope that you return to the headland whereby you will receive the 5* standard our guests expect.

We stayed in the cottages over New Year, our 4th time at the hotel and our 2nd in the cottages. The cottages really are a wonderful home from home - beautifully decorated and well equipped with everything you need for a s/c break. So warm too. Having the hotel and its facilities so close by is fantastic, my husband and daughter made good use of the new wellness centre and we had a couple of meals in the Terrace restaurant. Service was not quite as good as we have experienced before but we put that down to how busy it was and it didn't detract from our overall experience which was still very good. A bracing walk on the beach on New Years day with the mutt and our 2 daughters was a fantastic start to 2013 and we look forward to being back soon!

Thank you for taking time to post a review about our Hotel and Cottages. What a pleasure it was to read your comments. It makes us very happy and proud too when we hear such lovely reviews. Our Cottages are designed to make you feel “home away from home” and we like to add a touch of luxury to make your stay extra special! I can’t think of a better way to start the New Year and it is our pleasure to be able to offer this experience to our guests. Our Terrace was indeed busy over this period. I appreciate your understanding at the time and for letting us know you found the service slower than you would have hoped. This matter will be looked into to avoid this happening in the future. It will be lovely to welcome you all back to the Hotel. We are very pleased to announce our wellness area will be increasing this year and incorporating a gym and a spa, so extra amenities for you all to enjoy on your next visit with us!

Stayed at The Headland 2nd - 4th January. I cannot praise the staff of his Hotel enough. Nothing was too much trouble and always a smiling face to greet you. The food in the restaurant was exceptional. My husband and I along with our border terrier dog can't wait to stay again.

Thank you for staying at The Headland earlier in the New Year, and for taking the time to post on this forum. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay; we will not be closing in January 2014 as we will have the new spa, and therefore you will have the choice to stay a little longer if you wish!

Stayed for 4 nights over the christmas and was stung a whopping 1750.00 for the two of us, the service was good but the food was very poor, sending back several meals, meat full of fat and hard. Children running around and full of dogs, we love dogs but one family had 5 and
were allowed to get on furniture, come on headland where have your
standards gone, Its has been about 10 years since our last visit and boy
nothing like it used to be, gone are the days of quite and good food.
Will not be returning in the future.

Thank you for bringing your visit to my attention, it was very disappointing to read this review and quite a shock at the same time. As a hotel we very much encourage constructive criticism and feedback from all of our guests so that we are able to monitor and continually strive to deliver excellence in everything that we do, and stand for. It would seem that your stay was not at all successful and although this is a most unusual outcome and is a real shame for any guest to feel this way.
We have had fantastic feedback from guests who stayed over both the Christmas and New Year periods and which were both very popular periods this year. We had many comments relating to a great atmosphere, food and service therefore I am struggling to understand what went so wrong, and I certainly haven’t received any such information from any of our managers who were on duty over this period.
Please do not hesitate to contact me personally if you would like to discuss your stay in more detail as I believe this would be beneficial for both of us to have a more informed understanding of the specific issues which affected your stay. I am confident that if you do decide to return to The Headland, you will experience everything up to the normally very high operating standards that you would expect of us.

We stayed at the Headland after New Year, making use of their 2 for 1 offer, and special dinner rate.
This is a fine old hotel, still privately owned, with lots of character, and in a spectacular position. It is well placed for surrouning areas, Padstow, Lands End, St Ives and the Eden Project. We had an ocean view room on the third floor, which had good views although the windows are a bit small and difficult to keep clean. The rest of the room and the hotel was very clean. It was popular with families as the schools hadn't returned.
The staff were friendly, helpful and always smiling.
I really enjoyed the recently refurbished Wellness area and used it each day, it appeared well used by many of the guests but it was possible to find a quiet time.
We had some good meals in the restaurant, dining was an unhurried relaxed occasion which makes a change from some other venues. The deserts were fabulous and the wine list fairly extensive some quite reasonably priced certainly better value than drinks in the bar which seemed quite pricey.
I would certainly recommend this hotel

Thank you for taking the time to review our Hotel. As you mentioned we do have a wonderful location; not just for the lovely views of Newquay but also the other popular attractions around the County and for this we are very proud. I was pleased to hear you enjoyed the stay so much and delighted that you will recommend us. It was nice to hear you made good use of all the amenities also. I was particularly pleased to hear you found the room clean and tidy. With regards to the outer windows every effort is made to keep them gleaming however, with our close proximity to the sea this does prove a challenge as the sea spray does tend to linger as I am sure you can imagine?
I have extended your gratitude to our staff. It is always so nice to hear that our guests are made to feel comfortable and welcome. Our wellness area and pool are indeed a lovely place to relax, later this year we will also have our new spa and gym to add to the wellness area to make it a place in which you can spend the whole day! We look forward to welcoming you back to the Hotel soon.

We loved staying at The Headland. It is a old hotel in a fantastic location with loads of character, comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Our family room (or suite as it were) with bunks for the kids was nearly perfect. The room itself was ideal, but the location. - just above the hotel entrance- meant that it was noisy as we could hear the coming and going of guests, which may be remedied when they build they underground car park that I think is part of their plans. our room was also described as "coastal view" but for all intents and purposes, the view was inland. The room faced inland and you could just see the coast if you stood right up to the window and glanced to the left. Personally I don't like when hotels do this - label a room something it's not save for a slight technicality like being able to see the coast from an awkward angle. In any case, the room was immaculate and furnished with comfortable furniture and tasteful decor.

Did I mention the friendly staff? These people are genuinely nice and helpful. The only major shortcoming is the restaurant. Breakfast is generally great but poorly organised as they were out of yogurt a couple days and other items on various days. Also, our children were disappointed never to be seated at a window table any morning despite requesting one. Overall, breakfast is very good. We never managed lunch as we were out & about. Dinner aspires to be a gourmand type meal and is priced accordingly but is mediocre to barely edible. For example, my husband ordered duck and it tasted like duck from a French hypermarket vacuum pack - edible but not at all what we expected. This is disappointing but would not stop us from staying again as Padstow is a short drive away with several excellent restaurants. We can't wait to return again.

We also took a tour of a couple of Headland cottages, which were just as comfortably furnished and tastefully done as our hotel room.

Thank you for staying with us earlier in the year and for sharing your review on this forum, indeed this beautiful grade11 listed hotel, and is a very grand lady having first opened its doors for business in 1900!
The coastal family rooms are a great option when staying with children and represent very good value for money. I am sorry to hear that you were aware of the comings and goings of other guests, there were a number of families who chose to stay for a few days after the New Year and before the school term started. Please be sure to mention this if you are booking with us again, as we can often offer an alternative for consideration. Our Coastal rooms are appointed on two elevations of the Hotel and occupy a range of views from other Newquay beaches going further to the north such as Porth and Watergate, whilst other rooms and suites have an outlook towards the distant coastline of Newquay centre, far beyond our grassy grounds and practise golf course.
Please pass my apologies to your children for not getting their window table! I don’t blame them for being disappointed as there is a lot of interest from the seaward facing of the Hotel, easily sorted next time – my promise!
With regards to your observations of dinner, which were disappointing, please be assured that we do ensure that all such information is shared with the team, albeit I must stress that our duck is sourced from a renowned and trusted Cornish supplier, and definitely not of the suggestion made.
I look forward to welcoming your family once again in the not too distant future.
