“Not the Same....”
Reviewed 28 February 2013

This was our 5th trip to this large seaside hotel and we have always had wonderful stays here. However, this last trip just did not match our previously good experiences. We had booked a Fistral suite and were quite disappointed by how small the sitting room was - just a dressing room really and only contained/had room for one small sofa and a TV! The bedroom was adequate. Our last stay was in a coastal view room for less money of course, but we felt, better maintained than the suite which was just not worth the extra and probably should perhaps not be called a suite. Better to go for a larger suite if you require a decent sitting room. We both needed to work and needed the space. The bathroom was excellent but did not have underfloor heating as the previous room had. There were no slippers provided and apparently none to be had. The menu in the Brasserie is very limited. The main dining room was much better although we felt one or two staff members did not have a good enough grasp of English. But they were pleasant and hardworking. Previous visits have always provided turn-down but not this time and in fact considering this was only day 2 of a new season on the Saturday our room had not been serviced before midday. The spa is still out of commission due to refurbishment which has been going on for an awfully long time. Not a problem, as we knew that before we booked - but others may be disappointed if they don't thoroughly read the website. We felt that the hotel, on this visit, had just lost that edge which it previously had.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us recently and for sharing your experience. We welcome all constructive feedback, usually outstandingly good I am pleased to say, but not always as in this case.

We are pleased to be able to offer an extensive range of rooms and suites throughout The Headland, and therefore able to accommodate the needs of all our potential and return visitors alike, relavent to rate and facilities, style and aspect.

Our Coastal rooms offer excellent value for money. However the vast majority of our guests would say that the Fistral beach views,of contemporary beachside styling ,the underfloor bathroom heating, feature bath tubs, and massive waterfall showers that come within the 'Fistral' category cannot be rivalled, and once tried always will be....!

Thank you for your comments with reference to a lack of menu choice and I will ensure that this is raised with appropriate members of the team.I am delighted to assure you that guest slippers will be readily available, once the full spa facility is open. Our turndown service during early evening has always been available and remains so at all times of year. Due to guest preference however and in the interests of keeping guest disturbance to a minimum,we deliver this service only to those that accept when asked, during the check -in procedure. It is quite unusual for bedroom servicing to run beyond mid day where in- house rooms are concerned , this is something that we will be mindful of, but this is not something that we have been made aware of before.

With refererence to the spa being 'out of commission' I feel that I should clarify that it is a brand new £2 million facility, not a refurbished one,and has therefore never been in commission due to still approaching completion in the next couple of months. We have a beautiful Wellness Area which is being very well received by all that experience it. Coming very soon, will be a suite of treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, manicure and pedicure stations and not to mention a brand new state of the art 'LifeFitness'gym.

We hope that you will not be detracted by returning to The Headland when I am sure that you will find everything up to the usual high standards that you have come to expect of us.

This is the third time we have stayed at the cottage village. As usual, the staff are excellent when checking in. We found the cottage, as per all other visits to be very clean and had everything that is required for a comfortable stay. With six adults and two children under four it was perfect. The village staff contacted us every day to ensure that the facilities were correct. The staff cleaned every day. If you want a nice relaxing holiday , then look no further than the Headland, in Cornwall.

Room Tip: All cottage bed rooms are excellent

We have stayed at The Headland many times (our daughter even got married there) but hadn't been back for a year due to other commitments but it was like we had never been away.
We were greeted by the friendly reception staff even though it was 10.45pm when we arrived and shown to our room and next morning were lucky enough to have the sun shining and surf up just right for a bracing walk with the dogs before breakfast.
We had a meal in the main restaurant with our daughter and son in law and ordered off menu and were pleased with the response of the waiter and the quality of the food served.
It was a 4 night stay and just what the doctor ordered and trust me we won't be leaving it another year before we return

Room Tip: When choosing a room go for a Fistral View the view of the beach and the surf are fantastic

My partner and I booked this hotel last minute and went for the 'Scrumptious Rate' which included bed and breakfast plus three course evening meal, when you add all those up individually the actual value of the rate was fairly good.

Upon arrival we were greeted by (who I think was) the hotel manager who showed us round the beautiful hotel and then showed us in person to our room and went through the various services etc.

The food was really very good and the service was attentive without being overbearing, good sized portions and plenty to choose from, the only let down really was the dessert menu, it was a little bit lacklustre and felt as though it had little though or preparation put into it. After dinner we sat out in one of the many lounge areas and when we asked to light the open fire the staff were only too happy to comply and did so promptly - it was lovely.

Unfortunately there is a down side to this review in that we had booked for a double room with ocean view and whilst the view was superb the double bed was in fact two singles pushed together with a rather uncomfortable seam that ran down the middle. Little did I know that I would wake up the next morning with excruciating neck pain unable to move from the bed for about 30 minutes due to sleeping on the seam of the bed. What was worse is that I had a 6 hour train journey to look forward to that day. We did report it to reception on check-out and the receptionist did apologise and say that if we had mentioned it they would have provided a mattress topper, well to be honest I don't think a mattress topper would have helped and if I recall it already had one, I was pretty dissatisfied with her response. To my mind if you request and pay for a double bed then that is what you should get, not two singles pushed together, unfortunately this seems to be becoming more and more common place in hotels and I just don't think it's good enough, could it be considered false advertising? In addition they ended up charging us for the evening meal which was already included in the rate. They did however correct their mistake when we pointed it out to them.

All in all this is a beautiful hotel and I would recommend it to anyone, all I would say is make sure you get a double mattress and check your bill throughly!

May I take this opportunity to thank you very much for taking the time give us some very helpful feedback relating to your recent short break at The Headland.

I believe it was most likely our deputy manager , Adam Cornish who greeted you on check -in and would therefore have taken you to your room.

I am so sorry to read that the room you occupied must have contained a 'zip and link' bed and whilst this would appeared as an oversized double bed,the comfort levels were clearly not acceptable.I would like to apologise for this situation and I am so sorry that we were not aware at the time, if we had known we would have certainly have facilited a move to an alternative room. The second apology must be for the error that you mention and that appeared wrongly on your final account.

Please be sure to mention these issues on any return visit that you may intend to make,we sincerely hope that this will be the case, and we will do our utmost to make your stay a pleasurable one.

Recently returned from a truly relaxing break at the Headland. We booked a coastal view room which was very indulgent! superb bedroom and amazing bathroom facilities. View was great too!
The hotel itself is grand - the main rooms holds its history well as they are well preserved yet newly redecorated. A relaxing place to eat, drink and unwind with a book. The food was excellent in both the bar and restaurant.
The best part about the hotel was the staff - everyone was sooo welcoming and chatty and all had time to say hello or good morning. The staff make the hotel feel even more welcoming!
There were plenty of dogs around in the main areas too which is so nice to see that they are welcome too!
One slight down side was the pool area - it wasn't huge and filled with children so it wasn't as relaxing as it might have been but I think we timed our visit to the pool wrong!
Amazing location, amazing staff, fantastic accomodaiton - we shall return as soon as the bank balance lets us!

Room Tip: if you can afford then get a coastal view room - if you have loads of £ get the ocean view!

Thank you for taking time to review the hotel. The views we have are indeed “great” and our coastal view rooms will never disappoint! It was lovely to read your comments regarding our staff. Everyone here is very proud to be working in such a lovely place, and we take pride in making sure our guests feel comfortable and welcome at all times. Including the furry ones! Our Chef is delighted with your comments about the food from the terrace and the restaurant.
With regards to the pool, there are usually times when there are less children swimming and our staff are happy to advise you of these times. It will be lovely to see you both again at the Headland in the near future.

The Headland has a series of cottages in its grounds, modelled like a Cornish village. Our favourites are the Sea spray ones, overlooking the sea, with just the coastal path between. You can hear the sea very clearly and look out at it from your bedroom. Very comfortable and stylish, but a little pricey now.

It is very nice to read your thoughts on our beautiful cottages. They really are exquisite and a unique find in Newquay. The views are one of the best in the county and I am yet to meet anyone who isn't pleased to hear the sound of the ocean outside their window! We hope that you will visit us again soon.

We have just returned from a second 3 night trip to the Headland. It was as good as the first in every way, a lovely coastal view family suite with plenty of room for my husband, my 2 daughters and I. The food was fantastic and as before, the staff made the trip so relaxing being helpful, polite and treating my daughters so well. A third visit will have to booked soon!

It will be a pleasure to welcome you all again for your much anticipated third visit. We are always planning new ventures for the hotel, starting with our spa and gym opening later this year.
