“Fantastic Hotel with Priceless view!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

We have stayed at this hotel several times both within the hotel and the cottages. Every time we stayed the food has been great and facilities are fab, and like I say, the view out to sea with a sunset is breath taking. I would like to stay that it has been a couple of yrs since we stayed so I cant comment on their new spa.
My only negative would be that they have now out priced alot of families who used to go. It is far to expensive now for what you get. Myself and my family have stopped going due to the increase in price.

Room Tip: Although expensive the cottages are very nice and give you the views with good space.

As regulars at the Headland we stay because of the great location, the work they have been doing dramatically improving the hotel and the staff are always great - particularly Richard in the Brasserie. However this trip the team excelled themselves. We asked reception to call a taxi. Despite the taxi's assurances the taxi let us down and there was no car. The Assistant Manager Adam stepped in and drove us to the station and we literally made it on time running up the platform with the driver holding off leaving until we got on. I had a plane to catch and making that train was a huge plus. This last piece of exemplary service at the end of another great stay cements the Headland as my favourite place to stay in the South-West. I don't measure service when all is well, it is when things go wrong that you see the strength of a place. Great service and a great hotel.

We chose this hotel for its location its quality and its family and dog friendliness. We were not disappointed with any of these. We stayed in a lovely cottage with fantastic sea views our own small outside space and 2 bedrooms with en suites. It was clean smart and homely. It created the opportunity to enjoy the advantages of self catering with hotel facilities. Our son loved the tennis courts outdoor heated pool and the pitch and putt. We were easily able to arrange tennis coaching and surf lessons . It was great to have such easy access to such a beautiful beach, and no need for sandy sandwiches with the cottage so close at hand.
I was surprised to read reviews that were critical of the reception staff, we found them helpful and friendly and one lovely lady looked after our dog at reception for a few hours to let us eat out one lunch time.
previous comments relating to service in the restaurant did match our experience, the food was good and the service friendly just not very efficient considering the prices, main course didn't arrive together and wine to compliment out min mel arrived as we were finishing- we only ate there once
overall a very good holiday blessed with good weather and really worked for us- would return visit

Many thanks for your very favourable review. I am delighted that you all enjoyed your Cottage holiday here on the north coast of Cornwall. It would certainly seem that these beautifully located, private and cosy just go from strength to strength in popularity! In fact we could do with even more of them at certain times of the year.

Great to know that on site facilities like Tennis and surfing all worked for your family members, additionally you that you benefitted from our informal arrangement to baby sit, well behaved, four legged guests on request!

Look forward to seeing you again in the future,

Kind regards

Darryl

The Headland location is amazing. Alas that is the peak of its appeal. Our expensive room had a great view but was very small and cramped - possibly more of a large cupboard? Service was always slow wherever in the hotel and no spa is relaxing with kids taking over, shouting and jumping in the pool. Must mention Maeve who was a friendly, efficient and professional restaurant host. However it was nice seeing dogs so at home in a hotel and the team do well as it never felt overly doggy. We both had excellent, good value spa treatments but management must rapidly grasp the nettle and make the pool adults only otherwise the massive investment in the facilities will be wasted as noone will return to the least relaxing spa ever. Negates all the positives and hard work of the talented spa team. We wont rush back - Come on management pull your socks up.

Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience of The Headland.
I am really quite unsure what room you must have been occupying whilst with us, I have never actually received any of our rooms described in this way. This would include our Courtyard rooms, which offer fantastic all round value, albeit they offer an internal courtyard view only.
There is no excuse for slow service, at any time of year, and irrespective of the time of year; I would like to assure that this will be an aspect of your stay shared with our team and towards improving in the future peak periods particularly.
I am really very pleased that you had the opportunity to experience our spa and furthermore to rate them really quite highly. There are more areas of the spa to open in due course including a VIP Suite and Relaxation Lounge, offering absolute adult peace and tranquillity. However, in the meantime I would like to be quite clear, that we will never make our pool an ‘adults only’ area, and would not in any way be anything, that would fit into our business strategy. Our vision is, and always has been, to have a collection of bespoke adult treatment rooms for both double and single occupation, with full relaxation opportunities and refreshments before and afterwards. The pool will remain a mainstream facility for the use of all our guests, particularly during school holiday periods, with the introduction of some restricted children swimming times during term time.
I am sorry to read that you wouldn’t rush back to see us; considering a more suitable time of the year for your particular requirements, I feel should at least be considered?
Thank you for your feedback and with best wishes
Darryl

I stayed with my wife, daughter & dog in an Ocean View family suite (room 317) for 7 nights from 3rd August on a bed and breakfast basis. The view was wonderful and the room met our expectations fully. The staff were friendly and the hotel was child friendly and exceptionally dog friendly. We used all the facilities and were very satisfied with the service provided. Looking at previous reviews people were unhappy with the number of children in the spar area. Our experience was that any children in the spar, and outdoor pool, were well behaved and supervised. If you holiday during the school holidays expect to see a few children.

The location is fantastic and the outdoor pool, the pods and the terrace all added to our experience of a great holiday at the Headland. We stayed during the Boardmasters and enjoyed the hustle and bustle though this may not have been for everyone , but we booked knowing his was happening during our stay.

We had a really good stay and will definitely return to he Headland.

Thank you Andy for your lovely review and so pleased that you enjoyed being in Cornwall for this year’s Board masters festival. By all accounts it was one of the best so far and a very busy and successful time for everyone involved or connected in some way. As with previous years, The Headland played its part and accommodated the ever popular 'Flow rider' on the hotel grounds just above the beach, there was certainly an unmistakable buzz that makes this festival week very different to the rest, all in all great fun!

The first few weeks of The Spa have been a huge success. It has been fantastic to see the reaction on the faces of our guests on arrival at the Hotel, as they are toured through the very tasteful spa reception, en route to their room. I am confident that the balance of those guests enjoying treatments and also wishing to spend some time in the pool, coupled with our little guests who also enjoy the water, will soon establish a natural balance, especially when the rather exclusive VIP suite and relaxation lounge is complete.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and hope to see you next year.

Kind Regards
Darryl

We have just returned from a 4 night break staying in a family room, taking advantage of the kids eat and stay free package.
We arrived to find that our family room was a lovely bright and spacious room which overlooked the sea. The room had bunk beds that folded down from the wall, a very large double bed, a seating area as well as a small dressing table and spacious bathroom. We had been slightly worried that our family of 4 which included 2 teenage boys, might feel cramped in one room, as a family suite (which has a seperate bedroom for the children) were all fully booked. We needn't have worried and were delighted with room 131. We had on a previous occasion stayed in a family suite, which obviously gave the family more privacy but the family room is quite a lot cheaper.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the facilities at the hotel especially the pitch and put golf course and the new spa facilities.
As the weather was wonderful when we stayed we spent a lot of time sunbathing in the secluded 'pods' in the garden, these sheltered you from any strong sea breezes. We also enjoyed a swim in the heated outdoor pool. Although deck chairs are provided we both said how lovely it would have been to have full sun beds, where you could put your legs up, rather than the traditional wooden folding deckchairs (these do look like they have only just been bought). It would also have been fantastic if one of the waiters from the bar area had come round a couple of times a day to take orders for drinks.
We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the new verandah which has been built with very comfortable seating, it has a glass screen which holds off any strong breezes and a beautiful sea view. Every evening we were able to enjoy cocktails there before dinner ( the cocktails were amazing with a large selection although they did work out a little pricy at around £10 each !)
Our family had our evening meal in the main restaurant each evening, the food was delicious and it was the highlight of our stay! We all enjoyed looking over the menu and finding plenty of options to choose from, all of our meals were fantastic including the breakfast, especially the items that are cooked to order off the menu ( the eggs benedict were a particular favourite).
The staff at the hotel were all friendly and helpful. I notice on some of the other reviews that people have mentioned that the service is slow, I have to agree with this, especially when sitting on the verandah it does take a while to get served a drink. Although service in the restaurant was a bit slow, we didn't mind as we were on holiday and we were not in a rush so it didn't effect our enjoyment of our stay.
I would thoroughly recommend staying at the hotel and we will certainly be returning in the near future.

Room Tip: The sea views were fantastic.

Thank you so much for your positive review, which was delightful to read and I would suggest very reflective of many other guests too, fortunate enough to have enjoyed this summer’s beautiful weather.

We are very fortunate to have so many configurations of both bedrooms, suites and of course cottages to ensure every size of family or friends can be accommodated successfully at The Headland. I am delighted that your family room worked for your family of four.

I will ensure that Stephen, our grounds man is made aware of your enjoyment of the new putting green as it has been his pride and joy these past few months! Hopefully you found the opportunity to enjoy one of our luxurious treatments from 'Voya' or one of our other carefully selected product houses.

Many thanks for your feedback with regards to a more attentive drinks service to the 'pods’, I am wondering if you spotted the new ones which are totally ocean facing, this is where the new landscaping has recently taken place?

I very much look forward to welcoming you back to The Hotel in the future,

Best wishes Darryl.

We spent four nights as a family in the West Tower Suite overlooking Fistral Beach. First impressions of the room were excellent - clean, nicely decorated with a good-sized lounge/main bedroom, a separate room with bunk beds, bathroom, separate WC and good storage space. The room is in the tower "beach-side" and as such is reached by stairs from the third floor. Reception made us feel very welcome and gave us a tour of the hotel and facilities.

The spa area is still a "work in progress" - the gym area was not yet open when we were there, but the treatments were all available and there is a (very) small pool plus sauna, steam room etc. This area is fine, but the pool really is far too small and is good for little more than a dip after using the sauna, or to sit on one of the bubble jets! As commented by others, it is also generally busy with many children, which would not suit everyone. We also used the tennis courts, and never had a problem getting a court. There is also an outdoor pool and a nine hole pitch and putt. The latter was not especially well kept and is really only for families to have some fun rather than for any golfers to practice their short-game!

There is also a surf school/office, where you can book lessons, and also store your own boards and wetsuits, as well as get changed and shower. This really comes to the selling point of the Headland - it is right on Fistral beach - you can walk down to the beach in 2 minutes and be surfing/swimming in no time. You can also get straight onto the coastal paths and explore the headlands and coastline around the hotel.

In terms of food there are two restaurants - the main (formal) restaurant and the Terrace - which is a bistro/bar style area. We ate dinner mostly in the Terrace, which cost around £30-35 per head for 2-3 courses plus drinks. The service was mostly very friendly although even if you reserve (which is recommended) you can sometimes get put on a small table in a rather out of the way area. Ask for a table by the window - and be insistent!

Breakfast is in the main restaurant and has a large hot and cold buffet plus additional dishes cooked to order. The food was excellent and plentiful. The service slightly less so - tea and coffee that doesn't arrive, orders that arrive wrong etc. We found the staff themselves to be generally very friendly, so either they are short-staffed or their front-of-house management is not up to scratch.

Dinner in the main restaurant was, to be honest, disappointing. It charges London prices and attempts fine-dining, and hence the standards need to be high. The food itself was not too far off the mark - the Roast Cod Fillet on Pea Risotto was good - the fish beautifully cooked but let down by not being seasoned properly. Similarly, the Chocolate Plate dessert had a wonderful parfait and a great chocolate/cherry brulee, but the chocolate tart was bland and the pastry dry and very overcooked. However the service and the attention to detail let things down. We were given one menu with old prices on it and when the order was taken from the diner who had that menu (who obviously did not realise he had an old menu) we were told the prices had been changed and they would not honour the prices on that menu. The waitress would not budge and she offered no recompense for their mistake. She then rubbed salt into the wounds by giving us the old menu again for dessert - despite reassuring us that all old menus would be removed. The chosen bottle of white wine also arrived at room temperature - again, not acceptable if you are charging £50 a head. Overall, I would not recommend paying out for the main restaurant - it's OK, but there is much better available for the money.

In summary - despite one or two minor issues, we did enjoy our trip - however given the prices charged I do think there is still room to improve. The hotel is clearty investing a huge amount of money over the next few years in building new facilities, of which only some are already on-line. As such there are one or two areas around the site that resemble building sites and which give the place a "work in progress" feel. However, the hotel also has fantastic character and charm and the location is a winner. For the most part the staff are also very friendly and any service issues are I suspect more about management issues than the individuals themselves. We would certainly consider a return visit.

Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback and following your recent summer holiday with us. Furthermore, I am delighted to read that you would certainly consider a return visit in the future.
As you rightly point out, the hotel is busy at the present time, particularly with children, and we are delighted that this has in fact been the case, throughout this summer period. We are a large landmark hotel (by West Country standards); additionally we have a stunning village of 39 Cottages. With our enviable position overlooking Fistral Beach, and with a surf school too, this will always make The Headland a firm favourite for families who are looking for a high quality, UK beach lead summer break.
Our Spa currently has two treatment rooms, as well as a beautifully designed manicure/pedicure space and more. During the mid to late Autumn time there will be many more and some very exciting additions including - Tanning, a VIP suite, and a private Hydrotherapy bath, not to mention a luxurious and very spacious relaxation lounge specifically for spa users who are enjoying our lovely treatments. The Gym will open on the 16th September; this will boast the latest equipment from Life Fitness a leading name in the world of working out, so please bear with us as we grow!
I will certainly ensure that your food and beverage observations are shared with the relevant members of our team; after all I would hope that improving the tea and coffee service at breakfast should be a quick fix.
With regards to your experience and feedback from the main restaurant, it is certainly the more formal of the two restaurants, albeit we do not steer any particular dress code, and we like to think of it as an environment to be a little more indulgent that the alternative. However, still friendly but with the expected efficiencies to deliver a fixed menu within a time period, genuinely recognised as acceptable for freshly prepared produce. Our three course dinner menu is priced at £34 with coffee and has not been increased for the second year; our feedback cards suggest that this is good value. I do accept however that opting for the supplemented or ALC alternative dishes will increase the overall price per head noticeably.
I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back next year, please do not hesitate to contact me personally in advance if you wish to, thank you once again,
Best wishes Darryl
