Myself and my husband decided to try this hotel for a 5 night mini break before the arrival of our first baby. We both found the hotel atmosphere very inviting and relaxing which was exactly what we were looking for. We originally booked an Ocean View Room, but to be honest was not that impressed, it was quite dated and small, so we opted for an upgrade to a Fistral View room, which was at an extra cost of £20 p/night, but worth it as we had a super king bed, lovely view, a new contemporary design along with a stand alone bath overlooking the beach/sea. Overall we had a very enjoyable and chilled out stay and enjoyed the gorgeous views of the beach, sea and sunset the hotel had to offer of Fistral Bay. The food was good, staff friendly and helpful. We ventured out into Newquay town one evening and had a lovely Mexican at Senor Dicks (recommended) the non alcoholic cocktails are good too! :)
We travelled from Essex to stay at the hotel and felt it was worth the 6 hour journey! I would definitely recommend a stay if you are after a relaxing, laid back and romantic beach mini break :)

Thank you for your review.

Fistral view rooms are very nice and a well worth the upgrade cost. I am glad you enjoyed our food and service, views and welcoming atmosphere. Newquay is a great place to stay for couples and families alike with plenty of places to relax and enjoy what Cornwall has to offer.

We hope to welcome your new family back soon!

kind regards,

Jamie

Although I was only here for a quick drink it was nice to see that some parts still look as though it has been kept the same. I understand that they lost their verandah in the bad weather earlier in the year, so, a new path is being done to the side of the hotel. There were lots of dogs quietly sitting in various parts of the Hotel.

Thank you for your review,

We have a lovely Terrace overlooking Fistral beach and the Atlantic Ocean which is the perfect location for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, evening meal or just a passing drink.

We were lucky to have escaped the storms this Winter with bare minimal damage however we are making improvements to the coast path on the side of the hotel which are now in the final stages of their renovation and looking very attractive!

Perhaps we can welcome you back for an afternoon tea soon?

Stayed with my mother and our dogs, Mum had a spa break package and thoroughly enjoyed her stay, taking treatments in the new spa. I joined her for lunch at the spa, great food, who new healthy food can be tasty too? Rooms great as always, and the relaxed atmosphere in the hotel is a tonic. we had an ocean view room and a court yard room, both beautifully appointed and very comfortable. the dogs were welcome as always, the cost of their stay including a sitting service and a dogs dinner every night. The staff are great, attentive and try to pre-empt your needs, suggesting things you may enjoy. Sam in the Terrace got us to try tarquin gin, now a firm favourite. Ate in the terrace and on the veranda, breakfast is something to behold, eggs benedict perfectly rendered and pancakes so fluffy. we can't wait to return avec pooches next year. thanks Headland, and the jute bags are the perfect souvenir.

Room Tip: Spend a little extra on an ocean view room, so soothing to hear the sea on the rocks below :)

Thank you for your kind comments.

I am so glad your mother enjoyed her spa break and you both enjoyed your lunches and evening meals.

I would always recommend a sea view room when staying anywhere in Cornwall. Perhaps on your next visit you would enjoy sampling some of our locally distilled Gin???

We look forward to welcoming you back soon, 'avec pooches' of course!

kind regards,

Jamie

We spent four nights at the Headland Hotel over the last weekend, as a young couple on a romantic getaway. We’ve previously stayed with the hotel and experienced flawless service, and hoped to book our Wedding here in 2015. We stayed on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate.

The location of the hotel is fantastic, and its Spa facilities are second to none, but the accommodation, reception, bar and restaurants are a different story.

Accommodation & Front office:

At check in we where greeted in the traditional Headland manner, and shown to our Ocean view room (308). The room wasn’t to the standard we expected but it was comfortable. As we where unpacking we advised reception that the safety deposit box hadn’t been opened, and the room was a bit grubby with stains on the mirrors, windows, and dripping stains down the outside of the wardrobe door and wall. We advised reception twice during the day, and nothing was done to open the safety deposit box or deal with the stains.

The following day Jude, the Executive Housekeeper met us at 9am to see the issues we had with the room. She agreed the room was not to the standard she expected of the Headland. We asked for the room to be cleaned, and we would be happy. During Breakfast Jude upgraded us to a ‘Best’ room (330) which was unexpected and greatly appreciated.

We found we had to report several issues such as blown light bulbs, broken sash windows, and handles hanging off a door on the third floor.

During our stay we found a few members of the front office staff to be apathetic, and inattentive to our needs, and requests (to have the room cleaned, and the safety deposit box opened). The warm welcome received ceased, with the staff clearly showing signs of being under pressure for the rest of the weekend.

The Restaurant

On our first night (Thurs) in the restaurant, we where shown to a table with dirty glasses, and cutlery. These where replaced with further dirty glasses (fingerprints and lipstick on the glasses). We where served still water twice despite requesting sparkling water. The wine served was also off, whilst this is not the Headlands fault, we had to get the Restaurant Supervisor to resolve the issue. Service was otherwise inattentive, and there was a significant delay to our mains due to a party being served in another area of the hotel.

On our second night (Fri), we where again faced with dirty glasses (residue on the glasses) and dirty cutlery (not just water marked). Service was again inattentive and poorly coordinated. The same water debacle ensued.

On our Third night (Sat), dinner had been moved to a make shift dining room in order to accommodate a wedding party. A no time where we told the restaurant was going to be ‘moved’ for the evening, until we arrived at dinner, and had to search for the location. The ballroom had been sectioned off, between the Terrace Bar and the Restaurant. There was no view of the ocean available, and again we where seated at a table with dirty glasses. The table was located on the middle of a sprung ballroom floor.

Throughout the meal intoxicated wedding guests walked through the makeshift restaurant, often unchallenged by the restaurant staff. This turned the area into a short cut to the loud wedding party next door. And the ballroom floor bounced with the kids from the same party running around on the other side. We where effectively sitting on a trampoline.

On our Fourth night (Sun), we where served dinner in the Restaurant immediately by the window which was rather special. However being greeted by yet more dirty glasses was not acceptable. Service was more attentive with familiar friendly faces of Nicola and Christophe making a special effort to make up for the issues we encountered. Despite this, we still had to ask for soup cutlery, steak knives, and to chase up pre-ordered side orders. These arrived after we had devoured our main courses. The restaurant supervisor was surprised when we rejected them as the delay was unacceptable.

Dessert was delicious, and Christophe brought through desert wine despite the fact we made it clear it was unwanted.

The Terrace Bar

Service was slow and challenging. The team seemed to be more interested in continuing conversations that serving for most of the weekend. Glasses presented where often declined as they where dirty. From fluff from towels smeared over the insides of glasses, to residue of other drinks, dishwater, and lipstick stains.

The Headland Spa

The team are more welcoming, and happy to engage than the rest of the Headland team. Facilities seem well maintained, and the therapists are quite knowledgeable.

Overall impressions

The Headland is in decline. The attention to detail that the hotel flaunts in marketing material is far from the standard you recieve. Be prepared to wait, and suffer poor service from staff in compromise for the location. The frontline team has changed, and not for the better. Duty Managers agreed with this too in conversations with them.

We where honest and upfront with the duty managers and staff throughout the stay, but it was clear that even their best efforts and promises fell well short of being acceptable. Promises of improvement in the basics turned out to be fruitless, and rather upsetting.

Suggestions to the Headland Hotel:-
- Teach your team how to apologise and resolve issues promptly
- Get a senior team member to check the restaurant before and during service
- Review service training with new team members
- Advise you guests when your changing dining arrangements. Especially those who have booked in advance.
- Bring back your cocktail menu
- Give Nicola, Christophe & Jude a well deserved pat on the back.

Room Tip: Check the room thoroughly on arrival. Go for an Ocean View Room when possible.

Dear David M, thank you for your review albeit your stay with us must have been very disappointing indeed, due to the strength and depth of detailed feedback.
I am sorry that you didn’t enjoy The Headland on this occasion, having chosen to return and also to have considered a wedding celebration in the future. We had many, many happy guests with 81 rooms occupied over last weekend; the added bonus for many, was the wedding complete with a Samba Trio playing on one of our grassed reception areas, allowing wedding guests to enjoy a Champagne reception on their special day, and with the amazing backdrop of Fistral Beach.
It was really very unfortunate that you identified unacceptable deficiencies when being shown to your Ocean view room, and the criticisms’ for which I wholly accept, particularly in the light of our executive housekeeper’s personal involvement in receiving these comments. All hotels have the potential to fall short from time to time, and with the possibility of so many reasons. Under the circumstances I think that we responded more positively than most would have, following your upgrade to the very best accommodation un- prompted.
I have forwarded your comments with regards to the restaurant tableware and glassware for our food and beverage managers to discuss, and to receive their feedback in due course. This specific observation has never knowingly been reported before, either on this forum, or through our guest feedback cards.
Whilst I am not sure it is particularly helpful on this occasion, we were not openly accepting pre- bookings for dinner from our main restaurant menu on the Saturday evening that you refer to, and instead any hotel reservations taken early on that included dinner, would have taken diners to The Terrace, as the restaurant have been privately hired for the evening. A few days prior, we took the decision to set a formal style restaurant in our rather grand ballroom, and therefore I was somewhat surprised to read about correlations to trampolines and so on.
Having read your review thoroughly ,my conclusion is that this just wasn’t the right weekend for your expectations or requirements on this occasion, when The Headland was going about being a hive of activity and doing what it does best, hosting a range of guests on a beautiful weekend in June.

Booked a 2 day break in advance at a good rate and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The hotel is old and modern at the same time - the staff were very helpful and the rooms very comfortable. We had two teenagers with us who enjoyed the whole experience . The hotel is minutes from Fistral beach so easy to go surfing and body boarding on Fistral beach without the need for a car journey - in fact we did not use the car for the whole visit.
The breakfast menu was interesting with various egg choices (eggs benedict, eggs royale) food at both the main restaurant and on the Terrace was good.
Little touches in the room (like a bag for recycling) was appreciated and the ocean view an added bonus - we will be back

Room Tip: Ocean room or beach view

Thank you for your wonderful review.

We have some great activity centres locally and on site facilities to keep children of all ages entertained.

All our dishes are inspired by fresh local produce on the Terrace and Restaurant and breakfast menus. I am glad your whole family enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,

Jamie

Wonderful place to enjoy Cornwall. My room overlooked the sea. It was spacious and well designed with large windows to enjoy the view. The hotel is perched high on a cliff top not far from the town of Newquay. I loved the old English layout of the hotel and it's period traditional features. Breakfast was top rate. The staff were a little slow and inexperienced. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Cornwell. I will return.

Thank you for your review and I am glad you enjoyed the experience.

The Headland enjoys some of the best views in Newquay from a beautifully maintained Victorian building. At this time of year many hotels are recruiting Summer staff. We have selected some very experienced and passionate people to join our team this year, who are now working to the standards we expect at the Headland Hotel.

We hope to welcome you back soon.

Kind regards,

Jamie
