“Fantastic hotel, the fantastic view a bonus!”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

What a fabulous 5 days we spent at the grand old Hotel Victoria in Newquay. It’s a week since we came home and I am wondering what I am doing, hanging out washing when I should be living the pampered life of luxury found at the Lady Vic.

We were 2 couples celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversaries and my husband and I chose Lady Vic despite some disparaging remarks people had left on TripAdvisor. On our arrival we were greeted by Michael and the great team on Reception. We were all overwhelmed by the beautiful entrance and grand staircase and the view through the long lounge to the blue sky beyond the windows.

Having booked in and our cases safely brought in we ascended in the lift to our sea view suites on the 4th floor. Wow, what a fantastic view - the town of Newquay, the harbour and headland, and the cliffs and coastline way up the coast towards Padstow – and all in the glorious sunshine. The rooms were lovely, spacious and tastefully decorated and furnished. Away from town traffic we had the sound of the sea (and the odd seagull!) to lull us to sleep. Tea making facilities with plentiful supplies got us off to a good start. Breakfast was amazing. Fred, the Restaurant Manager, treated us to a feast! Cereals, fruit, croissants, pastries, toast, jam and marmalade, and the “full English”, and of course, tea, coffee and juice in abundance.

A 3-course dinner each evening was such a luxury. There was plenty of superb food on piping hot plates. Nothing was too much trouble for Fred, our waiter Matt and the team. Our pleasure, their aim!

The bathrooms were newly refurbished and just called out for a leisurely soak in the bath or shower. What splendour. It was a treat to be able to share a morning cup of tea chatting to our friends on our balconies whilst watching the antics of the early surfers in the beautiful blue sea.

After a day out visiting an attraction or location in Cornwall, afternoon tea back at the hotel in the comfortable sofas in the sun lounge was just decadent. Then a swim in the warm water of the hotel pool and a few bubbles in the Jacuzzi regenerated us for getting ready for dinner with a glass of wine followed by a couple more in the bar whilst relaxing with special friends for a special holiday in a special place. Bliss!

Room Tip: Choose one with a sea view, well worth the extra. PS the food is lovely, have your evening meal in...

We stayed in This Hotel for the first time last week. It was absolutely beautiful. It is so elegant. The room was great the bed very comfortable. It had an Indoor Swimming Pool a Jacuzzi and a Sauna. It's close to the town Centre, and had its own parking spaces even though you had to pay extra for it. The Breakfast was very good. We will definitely go back next year

Room Tip: Next time I will pay a little more for a Seaview, but we could just see the sea from our window

We were touring round Cornwall for my husbands birthday and had inadvertently booked into a guest house posing as a spa hotel with pool (Chycara House another review) and had sat on a garage forecourt on booking.com desperately trying to find somewhere else with a pool for that night and the next. We came across this hotel and were not disappointed. For a little more than the guest house had tried to charge us we got a suite on the top floor over looking the sea with an outdoor terrace, living room with sofas and TV, bedroom with 2nd TV and a beautiful bathroom. Hotel has a spa with gym, steam room and sauna and a lovely pool with a jacuzzi and also beauty services. Breakfast was very nice and all the staff were helpful and friendly. Hotel is a little shabby and dated in places but on the whole a lovely place to stay - no complaints

Room Tip: Suites were on top floor accessed only by your key card. There are only 7 suites so was peaceful.

Having stayed at the Victoria around 8 times in the past 12 years, which have all been satisfactory, I must say this recent stay we noticed a marked improvement. The Hotel staff were very friendly and seemed to have a much more positive attitude towards guests. Nothing was too much trouble, most of all Fred, the Restaurant Manager, who could not do enough, went over and above his usual duties to ensure our stay was a pleasant one, he is a real asset to The Victoria. Excellent Stay, very much look forward to seeing you all in September. David and Donna

Very well situated in the centre of Newquay and on a cliff overlooking the bay. The hotel is very spacious with several large lounges and a large restaurant. Very much Victorian style with beautiful entrance hall furnished in wood. The staff, especially a gentleman called Michael (in the reception), are a credit to the hotel. Service is second to none. Polite, friendly and with a can-do attitude the stay felt good from our arrival. The rooms are of a very good size and comfortable. The bed was also very good size and comfortable. Our room was on the first floor with a sea view. This had the added advantage of a very large terrace, which is good if you smoke. The breakfasts were very good especially the weekend buffet. Again, service was exemplary. The hotel also provides a nice swimming pool and jacuzzi with nice warm water, sauna & exercise room, these are a must if you visit the hotel. The hotel is very well situated, with bars and restaurants although I would recommend the Mexicana Cantina , which is about a 5 minute walk instead of the Senor Dicks which is very Tex-Mex. The hotel is impressive, and well worthy of the 3 star rating. With a slight spruce up this hotel could easily reach the 4 star level. Parking is on the premises and worth the small fee. I would definitely visit this Hotel again if I am in Newquay. Overall, my family and I had a very nice stay. Thank you to the staff of Hotel Victoria. You are a good reflection on the Hotel industry.

Room Tip: Sea view, first floor if you want access to the terrace

My husband booked a weekends stay for my birthday. We were travelling with our 9 month old daughter so had a family room. We paid extra for the sea view which I believe was worth the extra cost.

The room was a great size with doors out onto the roof. It was a wet weekend so we spent little time out there but a gear addition. There were a large number of drawers for our daughter to open and close within the room so she was in her element! We had a bit of a challenge keeping the kettle out of her reach though as this was positioned on a low stool. We were pleased with the room and the only thing we would have preferred would have been for it to have a bath rather than shower.

We visited the pool and the facilities were great. I was disappointed to see a group of girls sat in the jacuzzi drinking alcohol as it made it feel a little less child friendly. We did as a result spend less time in there than we would have done had they not been there. This may have been the same group we heard arriving back at their rooms in the early hours.

The hotel is great and the staff really do make it. It had everything you need for a family break but does also cater for groups visiting Newquay to party. I do not want this to be considered a negative review as we had a lovely stay.
