“An oasis in a desert of bog-standard pub food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

A night in central Cornwall -- where to eat? A search on the web revealed one acceptable venue had been burnt down a few years ago -- the next alternative was still closed after Winter storm damage - and I really didn't want to drive as far as 'Padstein', alias Padstow -- I had already eaten at that establishment on several other occasions! I wanted a change. So after an extensive search I found the Two Clomes -- Interesting name, good reviews --- go for it.

A friendly welcome and a pint of well kept Doom Bar ale offered encouragement -- 'yes please, can we see the menu'. It was interesting and so were the specials -- a good balance between seafood, meat and also vegetarian options. I ordered the smoked breast of duck salad for a starter, it was presented on a slate, it was tasty and perhaps there was too much dressing on the salad. However, that was insignificant, the duck was so tasty. Another pint of Doom Bar please! (It was a hot day for early May). For main course, I had scallop and Cornish crab on spaghetti with garlic ciabatta - equally as pleasing as the starter, with plenty of the flavoursome sauce to mop up with the bread. Followed by a dessert of profiteroles, filled with Cornish cream and covered in chocolate sauce (one is entitled to some over indulgence occasionally despite the calories!) A Coffee finished the evening.

My wife also had an enjoyable meal, although her main course was perhaps accompanied by too much potato. Including drinks the meal was modestly priced.

'Mine Hosts' are to be congratulated for their kitchen that offers a good selection of local produce. It was all honest, well presented food - nothing pretentious. The staff were attentive and the time between each course was just right. The small restaurant area is functional, but versatile in layout to enable it to accommodate groups . Overall the Two Clomes tries hard to be one up above they average pub in the area -- This it achieves, and it is indeed an oasis of gastronomic interest that ranks it above other pubs in the surrounding area.

One omission - The Two Clomes does not have a website. Perhaps it should not have one. If it did, it would not be one of Cornwall's best kept secrets!

“Lovely food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

We chose this restaurant as a meeting point before our holiday. We waited in the garden before the rest of our party arrived. Lovely atmosphere. We had a late lunch here. Gorgeous menu to choose from. The seafood platter was delicious as was the sea bass. We weren't impressed with the wild mushroom risotto, but once we added some seasoning, it was ok. Cooked well though. Would def recommend and visit again if we were in the area.

“Lovely pub, good Guinness, wine & fantastic food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

We found this pub when visiting Cornwall in 2013, we were very impressed and went back again this year.

It was lovely, staff, management, everything was just lovely.

We visited both for meals and just drinks. Our food was superb, nothing was too much trouble we can certainly recommend the fillet steaks.

We will return on our next visit to Cornwall.

“Disappointing meal”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Having seen the great reviews on here we decided to go for a meal at the weekend with my husband's parents. Lovely pub, very quaint. Restaurant full of character. That is where it ends I'm afraid!

We had 3 starters, olives, bread and a fish starter. Cant really go wrong with olives and bread and they were fine. The fish starter was just really a salad and it was a game of 'find the fish' namely 1 piece of monkfish I think!

For mains 2 of us had fish platters, one lamb chops and the other a pork and cider pie. The fish platters were disappointing because the mackerel were served whole and I think we missed this on the menu. When we mentioned this to the waitress she just said 'It says whole on the menu' How about, 'I'm sorry you were disappointed, but it does say whole mackerel on the menu?!'

The lamb chops were pink, which is fine, but chewy and the chargrilled vegetables burnt. The pork and cider pie was really bisto soup with 3 bits of pork in it!

Perhaps we were just unlucky and ordered the wrong dishes. Sadly after that experience we won't be returning to find out.
