“A run down 3 star standard hotel.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2008

The ground floor of this hotel is 5 star, the reception the resteraunt etc could not fault it. The reception staff were very polite and helpful. But then comes the room. We were on the 3rd floor, paying nearly 800 pounds for 6 nights b & b in a "premier double" room. The view from the window was great over the atlantic, but the window didnt open and was permanently semi misted up(between the 2 panes of double glazing)
How it can be called a premier room baffles me,it was small, paint peeling off wood and a very small bathroom that hadnt been updated in decades.
The plaster was falling off the walls in the area from the lift to the room.
The 1st floor rooms are apparently being renovated with the rest of the hotel to follow in the next 12 to 18mths.
Its about 20years to late.
Even the outside of the hotel looks shabby.
I was desperate for accomodation as id been let down on another property otherwise id of steered well clear of this hotel.
If you cant get a 1st floor room i woudnt bother.

Stayed here for one night and had to check out early but there was no provision for an early breakfast or even a tray with fruit juice and yogurt. The rooms were okay but the phones didn't work for external calls and there was a charge of 50p if you wanted more coffee, tea or milk!

In contrast, the bistro was excellent: good food, good prices, lovely surroundings and friendly, attentive service.

We had arrived at a previously booked hotel and as it was very dirty we booked out immediately and came to the Atlantic at Newquay. We were given a balcony suite which was spotless and remained so throughout our 7 day stay. the staff were brilliant really worked as a team and the food was really good in the silks bistro. We had no complaints whatsoever and would reccommed it to anyone.

We booked an advertised SPA break for our anniversary without first researching on Tripadvisor. Two big costly mistakes as it turns out!
There was no SPA facility so we had our treatment in the room which was for us unsatisfactory.(Nicky the therapist was excellent though!)
Our break included dinner which turned out to be ONE main course from a limited menu (no meat at all or bread) and so we had to buy a starter separately.
Having left the restaurant we retired to our room only to be disturbed by a call from reception accusing us of leaving the restaurant without paying the bill. They obviously knew we were still in the building and oblivious to the fact that we left our credit card details with them at check-in to cover any extra expenses.
There was a wedding reception being held and whilst on the 3rd floor couldn't escape the boom of the disco which went on til late.
I have e-mailed the hotel but surpise surpise haven't heard a thing.
Please dont make the same mistake as us-staying in a decaying cardboard box in the middle of a council refuse dump is more attractive to us then staying at the Atlantic!

We are a family of four ( children 10 & 12). We are regular visitors to Newquay and thought we would give the Atlantic a go as from the outside it looks lovely. Alas that is where the 'lovely' stops. Luckily we were staying for one night on route to somewhere else. On arrival we were made to pay the full room cost in advance. The room tariff was £174.00 ( so not cheap!!!!). Below are a list of the issues we encountered.

Our room (104) smelled fousty, was very small and had dirty carpets with stains. The bedding was dirty and the paint work was chipped. The 'cabin' area for the two boys was so small they could not both be in there at the same time. We mentioned it to reception who offered to move us to another room (an upgrade).

Upgraded room was in fact no better. In addition there was lots of masking tape on the windows.

Went to the pool area - We found workman's rubble and dust up the stairs to the changing rooms and electric light fittings hanging down. There was obviously work in progress. The pool was so cold as to be unusable.

We tried to get some food - no one in the restaurant area to assist. We went out to eat.

During the night the wind whistling through the window kept up awake and then the window started to leak with the rain water coming through onto the sill and onto the floor and our suitcases.

In the morning we asked to see the manager which was refused as he "did not see guests in person we would have to write".

We went to try ang get some breakfast - there was no hot food plates and the waitress advised us that the chef / cook had to go to another part of the hotel but that she could "do us an egg if we wanted". The chef/cook returned moaning about the fact it should not be her who does the "deliveries".

We informed reception that we were in Newquay for five days and that we would be more than happy to pop back and discuss the issues with the manager if he cared to contact us. He never did. On returning home we sent an EMail to which we received a letter stating that room 104 was in fact the "lowest" priced room and that the windows in the upgrade had been taped up at the request of a previous guest due to the noise and leaking. The manager did not address the rubble in the pool or the lack of breakfast or the general rubbishness. We have emailed back twice now but as of today 03.06.08 we have received no reply.

The issue is that we are a young family who wanted to treat ourselves to a stay in a grand hotel so paid what we considered to be a expensive tariff. The hotel was shoddy and dirty, rubble in the pool, no breakfast and the saddest thing is the complete distain and lack of a response from the owner/manager Mr Cobley. No customer focus !!. It is a real shame and ruined the start of our holiday.

Do not stay here - it will ruin your holiday too - for another £60 you can stay at the Headland down to road and get complete 5 star treatment!!!!!

We have just returened from a 3 day break at the Atlantic hotel. The interior of the hotel is most impressive, it appears very grand and worthy of a 5 star, or so we thought, until we were shown to our room. In comparison to the rest of the hotel it was very dated and shabby, didn`t look too clean either, it was like entering a 5 star and then a door opening and walking into a 1 star bedroom, very dissapointing.
On the plus side we couldn`t fault the staff, they were very helpful and friendly. The Bistro was lovely and the food great and we didn`t have to wait long evn though the Bistro was full.
We wouldn`t stay there again as there was too much of a contrast between the actual hotel and the room that we stayed in, things just didn`t add up.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Atlantic Hotel for two nights this Bank Holiday weekend, attending a function on the Saturday night. We hadn't checked the reports on here before we went, since our main aim was to have somewhere to crash after the function. But it is clear from the reviews over the last four years that little has changed.

Positives: We stayed in a "new" balcony suite, which no longer has workmen and building detritus. The bed was excellent and clean. The bathroom was good, but although the glass bowl sink didn't leak, we did have a (appallingly written – spelt our names incorrectly and terrible grammar) letter put under our door on Sunday morning telling us there was a problem with the water in our suite. Fortunately, it was fixed by the time we came to use the shower. The staff were polite. We ordered some food from the Silks Bistro via room service; this was fine.

Negatives: Everything else. The living room part of the room was not well thought out, lots of individual chairs rather than a sofa, which was a shame. The remainder of the hotel is outdated, dirty and generally unpleasant. Walking into the wing that houses the balcony suites is like walking into a different hotel that has been bodged on to the main building. Breakfast service was slow and quality of the food (other than the sausages) was poor for the money (£11.95!). Although the staff were polite, they weren't helpful or considerate. It's clear they're used to having deal with lots of complaints. And then…

The tap water policy. We weren't aware of it when we booked, or arrived. We weren't told about it until we tried to order tap water. At the function we attended, we were told that part of the deal was that we had to buy the £2 bottles, not tap water. We wangled a free bottle out of them, and then let it rest. However, I was astonished when asking for tap water through room service that it was not possible. We asked for the duty manager and manager to explain the policy, but got nothing better than "it's our policy". Tap water from the bathroom was perfectly drinkable. And the whole thing is made worse by the fact that the hotel, and the rooms, are so ridiculously hot that you get dehydrated very quickly. After now reading the Daily Mail article from 2004, it's clear that the hotel director – it's still the same one – has no clue about customer service.

It was not the worst stay I've ever had, but considering the money we spent, it's pretty close. I will not be returning, and will be discouraging actively anyone else I know from spending their money there.
