“A nice hotel...but a few problems”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

The hotel was very clean and the staff were very helpful...we got extra pillows as soon as we requested them. The breakfast was good and if you went down after 8am the restaurant was quiet because the buses are getting ready to leave. The main problem that we had was our triple room (room 117) although a good size, had the kitchen vents directly outside the window. Given that it was really warm the kitchen noise and an overpowering smell came in through the window in the morning and evening. The swimming pool was great but has a very steep slope so gets deep very quickly which really scared my 6 year old on the first day. The rear car park is a nightmare and is nearly impossible to get in and out of. There is no soundproofing so both next door and upstairs are very loud. It is a great location and may come back again but would check what room we were getting first!

Room Tip: Sea view if possible as away from kitchen vents.

After reading a few reviews i thought i'd be safe in booking a few days stay for my family. Sadly it was poorly run and in bad need of a refurbishment. A simple request of can you push the two single beds together for us wasn't fulfilled and was only the start. A hotel over-run with foreign visitors created an uncomfortable atmosphere and there were barely no staff to be seen during the 4 day stay so even a simple tea/coffee couldn't be obtained in the lounge area. A very poor room which didn't match the expectations of the websites photos and the tv was barely viewable due to it's size, all to which the hotel were unable or reluctant to rectify. How hard is it to provide an extra pillow to the flat ones provided i thought, impossible it turned out. Definitely not somewhere we'll be visiting again anytime soon.

Room Tip: Check out the local area whilst on other trips and get a real feel for the hotels around as some web...

Q: What to expect from a three-star hotel?
A: in this case best nothing at all, that way one will not be disappointed.
Following points are reasons to complain about:
1. unfriendly service - I do fully understand that when there are two busses to feed it does get busy, yet I am not used to get this as an answer in an English hotel
2. misleading information - I do not know how the lady at the reception does it, but a walk into the town where the lively places are is definitely not done in five minutes.
3. horrible food - have you ever heard of a cold fruit juice as a starter in a three course meal? Me not! The salad was neither cleaned nor did the leaves have an edible size; the cold meat platter consisted among others of a very dry chicken leg; the carrots had been killed in the microwave and I fear they died a horrible though quick death
4. the hotel has a sauna and pools and a billiard table - have money with you because everything costs extra
5. where do you expect to find your nightgown after you have placed it on the bed? look somewhere on the chairs (which consume quite a lot of space in the small rooms)

All in all - not a hotel to recommend unless you do not value your money

Dear Guest,

I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with the Kilbirnie Hotel. Being such a beautiful holiday destination, many Bus Tours visit Newquay and stay with us. In the mornings our dining room which is set up to hold 190 pax comfortably is able to serve 2 x coach tours of 40 pax each as well as other guests. The added bonus is that the Coaches are on a tight schedule and so come into breakfast early in the morning at 7:30 am and leave at 8:00 am, so they are only in there for 30 minutes. They also only eat continental and drink coffee which gives the waiters plenty of time to look after our English guests who prefer a full cooked breakfast which we offer as well as our continental selection.

The walk into town as suggested, takes 5 minutes for you to get to the first bars/ restaurants from the Kilbirnie - not to the center which takes about 20 minutes. I am sorry that this information was not explained to you more clearly.

With regards to the Dinner that we offer at the hotel, we do offer a chilled fruit juice as a starter yes, for guests who do not want to fill up before their other 3 courses. We also offer ,of course, a soup, a cold starter e.g. prawn cocktail and a warm starter e.g. chicken goujons. The main course we offer is usually a roasted meat, e.g. roast lamb, a fish dish, a vegetarian meal and for anyone who wants something a little lighter - the cold meat salad. The salad we buy is a pre-mixed and washed wild leaf salad, and we do not use a microwave for our vegetables. We boil or steam all of our veg.

The billiard table is free to use, we provide the balls and the cues, the same as the pool table we have on site. As with pool, which costs £1 per play ( as you usually find in all places), the billiard table is in its own private room which requires £1 for the lighting for 1 hr.

The swimming pool and Jacuzzi are free to use for our guests and are open from 7am - 7pm. The sauna as you suggest does require a supplement of £5, this is for a full hours use for as many people as you would like to fit in with you.

I do apologize also , that the chambermaids folded your night gown and placed it neatly on a chair, this is normally a nice little touch.

We attended a dinner dance function here last night and
I would warn anyone doing the same to forget your evening clothes and put your thermal underwear on
on arriving the hotel felt cold ,there was little heating on.The lobby was heated by a calour gas heater and the same in dining room, although there is a large gas fire in ballroom it was not on and we had to request that it was turned on
I can say for sure that almost everyone was complaining of the cold including the men .
I believe this hotel is not open to guests at this time of the year and it appears that the main heating system is turned off .After sitting though the meal and speeches I was so cold that I felt
awful and we left long before the evening was over
This said the meal provided was excellent it was hot, plentiful and a good flavor but other than that there is nothing to recommend it
I will never go there again to an evening function as the whole event was ruined by inconsideration

Room Tip: did not stay night so cannot comment

Dear Penjenkin,

I am very sorry that you felt the cold the evening of your function on the 29th November.

The heating was on in the whole hotel and as we thought it was a cold evening we even put a calor gas heater into the reception entrance to stop any cool air blowing in from under the door. I felt that at 7 pm the reception was so toasty that i moved the gas heater into the dining room to give it a quick blast before your Dinner at 7.30.

The Large gas fire in the ballroom, which we put on when someone asked provided even more heat to the party.

I myself, the Manager who was working all night did not hear one mention of the Hotel being cold, i was only wearing a thin short sleeved top and skirt and did not feel the need to put on a jumper.

Again i apologize for the inconvenience caused for you feeling cold.

Thank you for your comments

The hotel itself is well located for the Beaches. Not too much of a walk to the Bars / Shops. I booked this Hotel over the Premier Inn because it has a Pool, "Thermal Spa" and Sauna.

The Sauna was chargeable. Both the Pool and "Thermal Spa" where Cold. I had to pay for a Sauna to actually get so hot that I could brave the Pool. Both the Pool and Jacuzzi where more of an endurance challenge than a pleasure to use. They also had an outdoor pool which was really Cold but this is to be expected as it's outdoors !!

The shower had very poor pressure and I found myself hunched under it. The Heating did not come on until after Breakfast. By this time I had my shower and it wasn't required.

Just returned from a two night break here, good position for the town centre if you can do a 15 min level walk, as that saves on parking costs. Free parking at the hotel.
Reception very helpful and quickly booked in. Lift to the bedrooms, sea view room was on the small side, very clean, good comfy bed, bedding and towels good. The room looked like it had recently been refurbished, unfortunately bathroom was dated. (A tip here to the hotel, get rid of bath and install walk in showers. )
Breakfast service was good, better quality sausages needed not the catering cheapest ones. But otherwise well worth the price we paid for the weekend. Can't comment on the pool as we didn't use it. Thanks for an enjoyable break.

Room Tip: Nice to wake up to a sea view.

On arrival the reception staff were very welcoming and allowed us into our room early. The room was very spacious and the beds were very comfortable. There is ample parking and the hotel is within walking distance to all local amenities. The swimming pool and Spa are very good. The breakfast is adequate and again the staff are friendly and helpful. All this made for a very pleasant stay.
