10 of us recently stayed in the Sutherland Hotel for a weekend stag do.
The hotel hasn't been updated for some time and if you look closely enough you will find faults (we had a broken shower, blown bulb, some iffy looking stains on the walls and carpets).
However, there are several good points:- the bar downstairs is open til late and seems friendly enough, you get a good breakfast in the morning (fry-up or cereals etc), friendly staff, a pool table and dart boards etc in the back room. We asked if we could change one of our rooms as it smelt of smoke, and they quickly obliged.
During our visit we were pretty much the only people staying at the hotel so I cant vouch for what its like during the busier months.
What I would say is that if you go to this hotel expecting too much then you'll be dissapointed. You get what you pay for here. I certainly wouldnt stay here with my partner, but if a group of us were to return to Newquay I could see us staying here again, as I assume this is primarily what this hotel is geared around.

This hotel is filthy, smelled of sick, god knows what on the walls and floor. The sheets were clean but the beds were damaged. Wallpaper peeling off the walls, damp in the bathrooms. Beyond awful. STAY AWAY!

Me and a mate were staying in Newquay for a few days, we got a tip about this hotel form a BnB owner so we went over and checked in. The whole hotel smelled kinda moldy and the first room we got didn't even have a bathroom door so we asked for a new room and got a replacement one. For starters the roomnumber was written with magicmarker on the door, the room smelled like the rest of the hotel, there was only one cup for tea/coffee in a room meant for three, the exterior plumbing was leaky so when you flushed the toilet most of the waste leaked from the pipes outside the windows one floor below and we had only been there a couple of minutes before we noticed a bug crawling on one of our bags.Needless to say we took our stuff and went to a different hotel. I see that a lot of people have rated this hotel as good, these people must either have been high or paid by the owner. In short stay away.

15 of us went to Newquay for a good time - and we got it. The place was clean and tidy, the staff were sooo helpfull. The pub was full of locals and sensibly priced drink. 2 minutes walk and your in the middle of everything. When you get back theres a late bar and bed. In the morning is a good breakfast then you start again. Awesome

8 girls, 2 rooms, amazing weekend!! Greeting was brill from Paul who advised it wasn't the Ritz but we'd have a fab time. He wasn't wrong. The rooms were basic but we knew they would be as we had seen the pics on the website. Both Paul and Roger made the stay an excellent one. They were very accommodating with us and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was always served within minutes of ordering, and it was lovely. Definitely recommended for adult groups going. Wouldn't say for families to stay there as they do specialise in group bookings of hen/stag do's etc.

Perfect location and great atmosphere!! We were a little put off by some reviews but decided to stay at the Sutherland because we got a great deal! Turned out to be perfect and would highly recommend any stag party to book now!! Friendly helpful staff, more than adequate accommodation, unbeatable prices and the owners were great! Even bought us a drink! Would recommend the Sutherland..top..top..venue!!!
