Just come back from a 1 night stay at the hotel and firstly with a bit of money spent, this hotel has huge potential. The lounge areas, resturaunt and down stairs lounge areas would not look out of place in 4/5 star hotel. There are lots of things to do if your sports minded re snooker, pool, squash, ten pinbowling, indoor pool, golf near by and the beach within walking distance. We booked half board and the food was very good. We only booked the day before and it said on the internet we had the last room. The room was ok, a bit tired and carpets need cleaning but it was what i expected from a 3 star hotel, not sure if there are better rooms available. The staff were friendly and helpful although they appeared to be a bit short staffed

The down side was that the external areas require attention. The roof areas could be fantastic with a new roof covering and some nice seating / lounges as the views over the esturay are superb. This area would be excellant for weddings and parties. The external pool area is also looking very tired and requires attention.

The other downside was that the service in the resturuant was shambolic. The waitresses although freindly enough didnt appear to know what was going on as they took in turns to asked the same customers there orders and didnt always get it right. Not sure if the correct training has been provided. The resturaunt wasnt full with only approx 10no tables being accommodated at the time. This could be easily resolved if they were given certain tables to concentrate on.

I would definetly come back and would be interested if there are plans for improvements to the external areas and rooms.

We originally booked our 1-night break at the hotel via Groupon - and selected a date in April for our stay. Unfortunately family illness forced us to cancel our proposed booking, but the hotel could not have been more obliging and allowed us to re-book in May, even though the offer had expired.
Driving through & seeing Newquay, I was somewhat apprehensive about a relaxing break in the area, but when my Satnav took us to the hotel my fears were quashed! Okay, so the decor might need some freshening up - but what a superb location the hotel has, and our balcony room (which could sleep 7!) was first class, clean, tidy and with a wonderful view. The terrace area offered spectacular views out over the River Gannel and we could not have been luckier with the weather - a mini heatwave on offer!
We enjoyed our complimentary bottle of wine on the balcony and then made full use of the excellent indoor pool before making for the bar and then the restaurant, where we enjoyed an excellent A La care meal with prompt & efficient service. Back to the bar for a drink to take out on the terrace where we watched the turquoise river ebb out into the sunset, then a peaceful nights sleep with not a sound to be heard - we even kept our balcony doors open!
Sadly we only had a 1-night stay, both of us could easily have stayed longer - but it was a thoroughly enjoyable stay, we loved every minute and returned to Devon with fully charged batteries.

Room Tip: A balcony room with river views is a must!

The Mill Race Activity Club based in Calne, Wiltshire and 34 of us enjoyed a holiday at the California. We are a Club for vulnerable adults so patience and understanding from staff is always vital to us. No Complaints at all,. All staff were extremely kind and thoughtful and hospitable to all of us. Restaurant staff accommmodated all our needs and the food was excellent and very well presented. All our members very much enjoyed the California bowl and again the Manager met all our needs and was very patient. Thank you to all staff throughout the Hotel for making our holiday a success.

Now must start with a positive: - the staff are one and all very pleasant, helpful, cheerful and hard working. Not one sensible request would be too much. They made our weekend stay a stay of good memories -- it was an extended family wedding weekend, so many a refreshment need requested.
None of us on any floor suffered total discomfort in the rooms which were adequately provisioned.
BUT
Peel back the gloss (lift the table cloth) and you'll find the aged decor, battered furniture, worn carpets, thin walls, of the general hotel stuck in the last century. Hot water on one floor at a time was cause of great myrth on the first morning, with many of us commenting on the creeking water system filling during the night. One feature screamed out that the place needs maintenance was the patio and it's planted tubs/pots none had been weeded for a year!!

I would recomend this hotel for 18-30 stay, or families with 5-11yr olds (lots of stairs).

Management please take time out for recon!

We had a lovely time at the hotel california, we stayed for 2 days over the weekend for a friends wedding, the hotel was great very family friendly, the staff were lovely, the rooms were very light, with a very nice balcony overlooking the sea, we also found we had esy access to the beach from the hotel which was great for my daughter.

We will definatly be revisiting.

Room Tip: a balcony room is very nice
