So unprofessional and shabby! Around the reception looks alright I suppose but the rooms are so old and dated they desperately need a refurb. The cleanliness of the rooms was horrible, I complained several times that my room was full of dust and our dirty towels weren't replaced, nothing was done about it! The receptionist was lovely but the woman owner is so rude! Not recommended at all!

Don't be fooled by the reception area, bar area and dining area, which have all had money spent on them. The decor upstairs is very 70's and shabby. The room we booked was cramped and very old fashioned. The shower room looked as though it had been put in as an after thought, although not much thought went into it. The bed lights and heating didn't work and although I complained at reception all I was offered was a fan heater and told that the maintenance man would be called....he wasn't. Two of the waiters at breakfast needed to be taught the benefits of washing and deodorant. As to the breakfast it was adequate but not of a high standard. One piece of bacon, one small sausage, one egg, small tomato and beans.....I declined the hash brown. All in all it was a horrible experience. Be sure to ask for a sea view as the view over the car park and building site is not pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the Gannel

This was our second trip to the hotel and we weren't disappointed. We were upgraded on check in to a room with a view which was clean and well set out. The bed was comfortable with nice pillows and the view was lovely. The bath was old but clean and the water needed running for a couple of minutes as it was brown but it soon cleared. We were on the ground floor and it was very loud when people were speaking outside our room which was happening up until 3am on and off! The biggest bonus of this hotel is the staff. They are smartly dressed and always polite and friendly. The evening meal was lovely but the breakfast could be better! A nice night away and we would return!

stayed at the hotel on the groupon deal, 2 nights in a double room with breakfast for both days and dinner first night, with bottle of wine and a glass of fizz for my girlfriends birthday, arrived early before check in so went to the bar took a long while to be served as no bar staff there, but receptionist served us while passing and was lovely.
checked into room 203 on the first floor and room was awful, very damp, and dated. clean but room needs attention, we did have a lovely view from the balcony, but room did have a smell of mold.
staff were very polite, especially both the evening and day time receptionists, very helpful and friendly, waiters were very polite and all the staff were well presented and easy to approach, unfortunately evening food in the restaurant was not to our liking and there wasn't a great choice but its off season so not really a problem.same dirty table cloth in the morning, sat at same table for breakfast with used teaspoons.
swimming pool really wasn't great, floor was a green carpet which was completely soaked as soon as we entered, very strong chlorine and jacuzzi didn't really cut it, barley warm and barley any bubbles, lent up against the wall and got covered in paint from the damp, changing rooms were cold and dirty didn't dare shower there.
the california bowl was clean in the bar area, we had a meal in there simple but nice, unfortunately the vinegar had alot of flys in it, having said that the manager Paul was lovely opened up early just for us, he was very helpful and polite and made us feel welcome.
checked out the other facilities on offer in hotel, and found a almost abandoned part by the sauna that had not been cleaned for some time, very dirty and damp looking for guests to see and light on wall was flickering, could be seen from our balcony and was flashing whole stay.
hotel needs a spruise up, would be much better with this, the staff are definitely the saving grace.

End of season so cookedd do with a lick of paint in places. Public rooms however are breathtaking, open fire & opulant lighting.
Staff really know the meaning of the word service.
Food beautifully cooked & presented. Plentiful.
Stunning views from room balcony & dining room
Thank you for great stay

This was our 6th stay at the Hotel California, and provided you can stay on a Groupon offer, it is excellent value for money. £79 for two for bed, breakfast, 3 course dinner and bottle of wine. (An extra £10 for the dog). We know the rooms are going to be tired and need updating, but they are clean, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is of a good standard with really good service from the waiting staff. The real gem about this Hotel is its location. Only a 10 minute walk from Fistral beach. The hotel also overlooks the Gannel, which at low tide, leads directly into Crantock beach. This is heaven for our golden retriever, and us too! Beautiful walks only minutes from the hotel. As long as you don't have great expectations for the Hotel you shouldn't be disappointed. It's the Hotel's location that is the ace card here.

We chose this hotel due to a good Groupon offer which promoted great views and included breakfasts and a three course evening meal. On viewing the Website we decided to pay extra to upgrade to the Gannel Suite - this was a good decision as the room was lovely. The Receptionists I spoke to when booking (Shona & Kirsty) offered helpful advice and were patient in answering my questions. The room was exactly as described on the Website - the balcony had stunning views of the Gannel where we could see the ebb and flow of the tide. Upgrading to the Gannel Suite ensured a larger, non-pet room with modern decor and a seating area with a large flat screen tv. I can't comment on the other rooms as I didn't see them. However, the areas of the hotel we used we all lovely; clean and welcoming. Walking through the doors into the large Reception area we were greeted (whatever time of the day) by the warmth of the fire and plenty of room to sit inside or to walk out to the terrace to enjoy the view. What really enhanced our stay was the helpful and friendly staff; the Receptionists, the restaurant staff and the cleaner. Although we only stayed three nights we felt we got to know the restaurant staff quite well during that time because they go out of their way to show a genuine interest in their guests. Mat, Eli, Paige and the team were very helpful, friendly and efficient and also made our stay fun (including the banter over our poor effort in the evening quiz - unfortunately we let Devon down!). Our room was kept clean and tidy by Val, who again was friendly yet efficient and made every effort to please. We didn't get to speak to the hotel owner, but if we had, we would have congratulated her on her staff. It was obvious that the staff we met all got on well and worked together effectively. We must admit that prior to our visit we were concerned about what to expect due to bad comments on Trip Advisor from other guests. We were particularly worried about the negative comments about the food and service. However, we could not understand why these comments had been made as during our stay the food was lovely, with a varied menu offering plenty of choice. We didn't get to use the other facilities, including an indoor pool, but saw snooker and table tennis rooms and thought the indoor bowling offered great entertainment on site. The Groupon deal made it possible/affordable for us to book this hotel and we enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the Gannel offer lovely views!
