“I wish there was a 3 and half star”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

We all have to be realistic with ourselves and the hotels we book, before we post damaging reviews on locations that are not trying to be something they clearly aren't.
The Hotel California is one of those places.
Fairly easy to find with decent parking and located right on the banks of an estuary.
The reception area is fantastic. Fire place to the right as you walk in, reception desk to the left with a large bar area, loads of lovely old seats, plenty of wood and stone pillars.
Reception staff were polite, efficient and informative. Almost as if they were genuinely pleased to have our business (unlike large chain hotels).
Our room was small. Quite small actually, but had what we needed for a 1 night stay. Comfy double bed, tea and coffee, hardryer, TV, nice view onto the estuary and bath/shower and WC.
Shower and bath had a mind of their own, but despite a few minutes trying to get it right the end result was still hot water which is ultimately what you want. (Hot water in your bath from these taps is the same hot water that comes from the 5 star hotel down the road really isn't it.)
Reception staff willingly opened the bar for us for a few pints. Nice selection of drinks available there. There's an indoor pool and sauna downstairs. Bit small but we never used it. There's also a bowling alley and club downstairs too. There was a function on the night we stayed but as it's 1 floor below ground and we were 3 floors above we heard nothing.
The bowling alley has a small bar and the guy behind there is jolly and welcoming. We opted for the hotel bar as it was a little quieter but with kids the alley is the ideal place.
Evening meal was fine without being exceptional. Food was nice with a good Wowcher led menu. One criticism was that after we got our free glass of wine the staff never came back and asked us if we wanted water or any more drinks for the entire meal. But it's a young, and I'm guessing inexperienced staff who despite their lack experience were polite and as accommodating as they could be.
Good nights sleep, menu style breakfast with toast and cereals as per most hotels. The full english was smaller than most yet perfect in size as we all tend to over indulge don't we? And it was pretty much perfectly cooked.
No, this place isn't perfect and I could point out the little flaws and things that would probably have annoyed me had I not been with good friends having a great time. But this hotel caters for a certain clientele and it's not the one that frequents the Hilton or even the Holiday Inn.
Don't come to this hotel with a grand vision of oppulence because you'll be disappointed. Rather come to the Hotel California with bed and breakfast in mind but on a larger scale and I'm sure you'll leave feeling that "everything was fine, thanks."
I would stay here again but might upgrade to a larger room. But for 1 night the small double room was fine.

I recently organised an Annual Dinner & Awards Evening for members and supporters of St Newlyn East Brass Band, at the Hotel California, Newquay. We had a brilliant evening! The meal was absolutely delicious and the presentation and service excellent. Hotel proprietor Mr David Jones dealt with my booking personally and nothing was too much trouble for him. The hotel staff were polite and helpful at all times, even assisting me to unload the trophies from my car and setting up the trophy table. The hotel management also donated a number of prizes to our raffle table, which was greatly appreciated. Thank you Hotel California - we will certainly be returning!

We stayed at this hotel last weekend for two nights for our anniversary.
We felt we should put it in writing in how much we enjoyed our stay with then. We booked via groupon & stayed an extra night. I paid extra for a balcony room which we were given on the 2nd floor after being unhappy with 1st floor rooms which was dealt with politely by your lovely receptionist staff.
I must add the staff (Matt & other man)in the dining room was very friendly, made us feel comfortable, the evening meals were 1st class, it not easy to impressed my husband who is a ex-chef and likes his food to perfection. It was spot on! Even breakfast was too.
We realised your hotel is old but lovely done up inside and the pool was lovely to swim in which we use twice.
Your hotel is recommended and we would go back again.

Do not stay in this hotel! We got this night in the hotel California very cheap through groupon, thank god as in my opinion we still did not get value for money! The room we were given was extremely dated and in serious need of decorating. The carpet was shockingly filthy, the furniture did not match and bits were hanging off it, the windows had holes in and were broken and that filthy you could write on them with you finger in the grime the only thing in the room that was ok was the bed! Downstairs looks nice and has obviously been refurbished, the food was ok, nothing special. We thought we'd use the bowling lanes but they were fully booked, the pool did not look very inviting either. Ended up going out in newquay town as could not spend the evening there. At 2 am we were woken by a child crying in a room nearby as the walls are so thin. Worst nights sleep ever, did not stick around to try the breakfast. What an absolute dump! We complained about our room etc but could not be moved as was fully booked so we were promised a free bottle of wine which we didn't even get. Absolutely shocking like staying in a hostel! Never again

Room Tip: Apparently there are some refurbished rooms which I recommend you request

On arrival we thought not to bad, on booking in an going to our so called SUPERIOR balcony room - what a let down, patio door latch was broken, the light switch, windows etc were really dirty, furniture and décor had not been updated for years, no problem to get moved to the room next door - even more of a dump, you open the door which was probably painted last in 1968ish and the first thing that you can't miss is the curtains hanging off the track and the track hanging off the wall, again didn't look as if the room had been cleaned for ages let alone had anything looked at for maintenance, and there was a horrible damp musty smell everywhere. Back to reception yet again and the receptionist gave a sharp intake of breath when a refund was mentioned, she gave us 7 sets of keys and said go and have a look at available rooms to see if there was a room we could stay in, of the seven we found one that was acceptable and clean and had the curtains fixed to the wall etc. The staff were all very polite and helpful throughout, but I think the owners need to take their rose tinted glasses off and actually walk around the rooms and see what a terrible state the hotel is in and see what the cleaners and maintenance man actually do in the rooms as it seemed like nothing. The food was acceptable although limited choice both at evening meal and breakfast. The feeling you get from the hotel is a cross between a youth hostel and a rank old peoples home. Don't do it find somewhere else.

Room Tip: Please choose one in another hotel

last night we went out to a Christmas do, hotel clean, warm, most of the staff friendly. the food was absolutely atrocious, starters garlic mushroom served very nearly cold, mains ok the plated turkey, stuffing ok, the fish good the roast potatoes served on the plate inedible, then came the veg...OMG burned carrots that were shrivelled and dehydrated, broccoli stalks oh and some spouts that were just edible. the manger spoke to my partner to smooth out any problems! yes like that was going to change such a bad meal, then came the sweet menu... Christmas pud, strawberry cheesecake with fresh fruit or chocolate brownie served with clotted cream, cheesecake edible, the girls asked if the brownies were served warm answer "YES" they were cold, the manager then asked us if we would like a sweet, NO.. the brownie's are cold ever though we were assured they would be warm...Mmm lies...when I said they should be served warm he tried to tell me brownies are always served cold, I then said but i'm a chef, that was the end of his argument and smoothing out as he walked away he rolled his eyes as if to say BOLLOCKS we've messed up again CALIFORNIA HOTEL PENTIRE NEWQUAY
