A weekend in Newquay due to a wedding, the reception being held in this hotel, so it made sense to check in here. First impressions, a warm welcome at the reception desk, signed in, and then up to our room, which overlooked ‘The Gannel’. Room was a decent size, clean.

Now for some negative points, with such a brilliant view, the glass balcony door could have done with a clean to appreciate the view with out stepping on to the balcony. The balcony could have done with a sweep, when I righted the small upturned plastic table, the rainwater that had collected spilled over on to my feet. The dressing table showed signs of considerable wear. These small points do let down what is a comfortable hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. When we entered the dining room, again, we received a warm welcome from the waiting staff. I had the traditional English breakfast, my wife had the scrambled egg, both were excellent. At the wedding reception, there was a three-course meal in the restaurant, considering the number of people to serve the food was of a good standard, again praise for the staff

The seating area and the dining room are large, comfortable, again with spectacular views of the Gannel and the beach of Crantock in the distance. The hotel does host an awful lot of art, which may not be to everyone’s taste, but it is certainly worth looking at. My first impressions of some of the art I did not like, but over the weekend, my views did change. Good to see quality work

For me if we were to return to Newquay, I would stay here again. The staff make this hotel, food was good, just a bit more care in the maintenance of this hotel, please.

The Hotel reception area is lovely. All the public rooms were very pleasant. The food was fine. We were on a Groupon deal so mabye that was why our ]bedroom was rather small and shabby. The whole place was spotlessly clean. The staff could not have been more helpful and polite.

Room Tip: We were at the back, over looking the river Gannel - very nice.

Decided to leave a review to allow others to fully appreciate this hotel. The Hotel was easy to find and a very short distance from Fistral Beach. Parking was easy. The Hotel lobby was very inviting with a large fireplace and lounge area with loads of comfy chairs/sofas. The check in staff was very friendly and we were given room 305. The room had absolutely fantastic views out over the estuary, beautiful. As for the room it was very dated and tired looking. The windows need replacing, the bed did not have a headboard, the bathroom did not supply us with any kind of substantial hot water for showering.
On mentioning this to the lobby staff we were offered a replacement room, but we opted to stay put due to the beautiful view and accept the key to room 306 for showering!! The room however, was clean and fresh smelling.

The waiting staff, Eli, was a delight and made each and every meal time entertaining. He was always polite and attentive and a credit to the hotel.

The food was exceptional. Every meal served hot and very good portion sizes. On the Saturday evening unfortunately, due to a large coach party the kitchen did run out of options on the menu which was a shame. We were offered replacements though and apologies.

The prices at the bar were extremely expensive with an average drink price of £4.50. The lounge to sit and have a chat after dinner was comfortable with music in the background.

Downstairs in the hotel there is an inside and outside swimming pool, which we did not use. Also a bowling alley which we took a look at, but it was very busy with locals.

Overall I would recommend this hotel if you use a Groupon or other voucher, its locality is excellent for viewing Cornwall.

On checking out we mentioned the problem with the hot water to the owner, who seemed disinterested and actually wanted us to pay again, not realising that his staff told us that you must pay before checking in! At breakfast, the owner arrived in the dining room and shouted out "Why 2 members of staff to deal with 6 diners?" What a shame and a let down. As his staff all did their very best to make our stay an enjoyable one.

One more mention for the cleaning lady (more mature one) who is an absolute delight, again a real credit to the hotel.

If you are thinking about staying at this hotel, then you should ask for room 302 as it was a much larger and better decorated room than ours. If we are to return then I would prefer 302 to 305.

Room Tip: Room 302 is larger than the rest with a large tv with a couple of chairs.

after reading the reviews ive decided to leave my very own . we stayed in the gannel suite for 2 nights over the easter wkend , first impressions of the hotel was the lobby was large and very clean , hotel staff were polite and helpful , our room was huge well decorated and the view over the estuary was amazin . Our stay included a 3 course meal , the dinning room was white and looked lovely , the food was out of this world , complimenst to the chefs , the hotel restaurant manager matt went out of his way to make our break that extra special , helping my partner organise my surprise engagement proposal.........nothing was too much trouble and matt made us feel like we were royalty , he went above and beyond his job discription .
yes the hotel has a few places that are looking a little tired but remember this is a 3 star hotel ...i reccommend paying that little extra to upgrade to the gannel suite if not only for the amazin views .
The evening meals were fantatic , just as the breakfast was ......cooked fresh to order , our stay at the hotel was amazin and we will be returning again in the near future .
it has a bowling alley , an indoor and outdoor pool , a sauna room and is a 5 min stroll from fistrel beach ...........what more could you want !!!!

Room Tip: view over estuary ..............gannel suite

We booked this hotel last minute over easter bank hol. It was slightly more expensive than what we wanted to pay. However i'm glad we did book this, its a quirky place. Its quite a large hotel. Breakfast was great with a lot of choice. Staff were really helpful. There is a bowling alley within the hotel which was a positive! Could be better if they offered residents a lower rate. Its got 4 lanes so is quite small but still very good. There is a small indoor pool and sauna. I didn't use these facilities. However they seemed ok. Its quite an old style hotel but clean and paintwork seems fresh. They light a real fire in reception everyday which was brilliant!! The views are amazing from
The terrace and the restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place. We got a cab for £6 from the hotel to newquay centre. The only negative was that the main bar closes at 11pm, for a hotel this size it would have been better if it was open later. Beaches are within walking distance.

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. There were both an indoor- and an outdoor pool which was free for us to use as staying guests. There was also a bowling alley on the ground floor. Coming into the hotel was like going back in time to the late 70s or very early 80s, but it was clean and stylefull in its own way. Breakfast was included and ok. The view over the river from the balcony was really something special. I would not mind staying there again. The kids, 7 and 9 years old, loved it.

Just arrived back from a long weekend at the hotel and this is the third time we have stayed there. I was apprehensive this time as I had read a few poor reviews but in a nutshell its a 3 star hotel and you pay 3 star prices. If you want everything to be brand new go to a 5 star hotel and pay their prices. The public rooms are lovely and maybe a little worn around the edges but the furnishings are comfortable. Theres a huge open fire on the right as you walk in and its really welcoming. The lounge and bar areas are spacious and have a mini grand piano with lots of seating. The staff are lovely and helpful. The restaurant is lovely and has yet another grand piano and the views are amazing over the Gannel Estuary and Crantock Beach. We didnt have an evening meal but breakfast was everything we could ask for and the service was great. The bedrooms are dated but we didnt go to Cornwall to sit in our room and the view made up for it. Bed was comfy and everything worked, my only issue was that our room was right next to the stair door and everyone seemed to want to stand and chat outside our room so we had some disturbance at night. There was an issue one night with a family being extremely noisy and aggressive allowing their children to play along the corridor at 11pm, but this was reported by another guest and dealt with quickly by the receptionist. This is not a large chain hotel and it shows, its quirky and a bit different and its obvious the staff really care. The location is great and you can walk onto Fistral beach in a couple of minutes and Newquay centre within half an hours stroll, there is plenty of free parking a bowling alley and outdoor pool. Great value for money and a great location.

Room Tip: avoid rooms near the stair doors as they can be noisy
