We didn't actually stay in the hotel but popped in for some food whilst in Newquay. The bar/restaurant area was well decorated, clean and spacious. They even have a new 'dog friendly' section which is great as we'd been for a long walk with ours. The staff were very welcoming with managers Ed & Barbara even popping out to say hello! They even gave 'moo' her own bucket of water!

The food on offer was brilliant with a wide selection and the staff very knowledgeable. It arrived in good time, was well presented and tasted delicious. We'll definitely go back.

Good value for money, excellent location, restaurants near by lots of choice. Excellent reception service , decor is dated and there was a "musty " smell about but I suspect that's due to it needing updating but it was clean and comfortable.

Good reception, nice clean room (recently refurbished) with a good view. Would happily stay there again.
But the bar/restaurant area is really in the style of a chain pub that does food from a standard menu through the bank of microwaves in the "kitchen". So there is an inconsistency which really jars. If you are customer of the hotel, you will almost certainly not eat in the restaurant and possibly not even have breakfast there.
It is good for a drink (particularly beer) and the bar area has great views and a useful garden.

Room Tip: Ask for a superior refurbished room with a view. It is worth the extra money.

Hotel is lovely. Booked sea view room and pre booked parking space and all wonderful.

Great views from wonderful sea view room, reception staff really friendly and helpful.

Everyone in Steam bar friendly and helpful. That is apart from Tory who accused my partner of using our own mixer!!!! As if!!! anyone bringing own drink would bring the spirit!

I split large tonic purchased in Steam between 2 single vodkas. Tory also served bottle of warm champagne so had to wait until cooled in bucket before cool enough. Maybe she was having a bad night but certainly spoilt what was otherwise a lovely trip

We stumbled into the Great Western Hotel after riding the train from Central London for about 5-6 hours connecting from Par... the hotel is right there. The rates are very reasonable, and the room while not having all the amenities of a four or five star hotel, was nice, clean and felt very homey. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, amazing views of the cliffs and beaches and water... the staff were really, really accommodating and nice to us. The rates are really good off-season here for 2011-12 we were informed.

Room Tip: We were fortunate enough to be given a room with a fantastic view. I don't know if all the room...

My partner and I stayed at the Great Western for four nights at the beginning of August. On arrival the staff were very helpful and though finding our room was initially difficult, when we found it we were very pleasantly surprised. Given some of the reviews on here we had decided to book one of the refurbished rooms and we were more than happy. The room was well decorated and well proportioned (though the bathroom was a little small). The view from our room was excellent and though we could, at times, have done without the squawking seagulls, we could hardly blame the hotel for that!

We didn't get breakfast at the hotel, deciding instead to eat elsewhere. On the one occasion when we did eat a snack at the Steam bar attached we were less than impressed but we had chosen one of the token vegetarian dishes on the menu and I'm not sure much effort had been made in creating the dish. It included the blandest hummous I have ever tasted!

Overall, we had a great stay at the Great Western. The views, the hotel and its staff means we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I would definitely go for one of the refurbished rooms as mentioned on the hotel's website.
