“Great hotel”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

My wife and twins stayed for three nights from the 4th April to 6th April 2014 and I cannot fault the hotel at all for the money we paid for a large family room with sea view. On average the cost of food in the hotel was on a par with anywhere else we ate bar the Weatherspoons where the food was nowhere near the quality of the Great Western. The bar/restuarant had great sea views and has been updated to a high standard. I got a reserved parking space literally outside the revolving door too.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends/family and will stay here on my next visit to Newquay.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 118 which has a sea view which was a little obscured from the roof of the restuara...

I decided to stay in Newquay for my birthday and based upon the location and price, decided on the Great Western Hotel. Although i cannot comment on the 'budget' rooms, i would highly recommend paying the extra for a superior room with the sea views. This is what made the trip for me, falling asleep listening to the waves and the luxurious feel to the room. Not to mention waking up in the morning to the view of the ocean, which was literally a stones throw away from our window. The bed was so comfy my partner and i had a wonderful nights sleep.
The staff were friendly and helpful, at one point we got abit lost on the way to our room and a member of staff escorted us, with pleasure, to our door. Also, upon checkout, we asked the receptionist if we could use the carpark for an extra hour to wonder into town, which was no problem.
I booked for us to have breakfast the next day which was nice, we sat by the window overlooking the sea. The gentleman serving was very friendly and helpful.
The only negatives i have to mention is the water pressure in both the shower and the tap over the sink were quite poor. I would expect for a superior room to have a strong water pressure to have a nice decent shower but it was so weak i was in and out in a few minutes. I did mention this to reception upon checkout and she said it would be looked into, so im not sure if this is a standard issue throughout the rooms or if it was just ours.
Another thing i was slightly disappointed with is the hotel did not acknowledge it was my birthday, despite me putting it on the 'special requests' section on the online booking form. I added it would be nice if i could have some complimentary chocolates or a bottle of wine and all i got was a phonecall asking if i wanted to pay for these items! Whilst i appreciate i am not the queen, a little note or a free drink at the bar would have made my stay that extra bit special.
Overall, i would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and i would stay again.

Room Tip: Superior with sea views is a must

A lovely friendly hotel where nothing is too much trouble. During our stay the restaurant was being re-carpeted but the staff out themselves out to make sure we did not suffer any inconvenience. Our superior room was beautiful and everything worked.

Only one negative comment - the bedside lights could not be reached to switch on or off without getting out of bed, but otherwise all was well.

Room Tip: The superior room was well worth the money for the views.

Stayed at great western one night stayed in a premium room and it was nice it was a refurbished room and pleasant it had a nice sea view and was very clean . The hotel is older but they are doing it up and it's going to be nice when it's finished . For the price we payed it was good a very comfy bed and tea and coffee in room staff we helpful and the only thing I could say was I missed a bottle of water in the room but that's the only thing that they could improve on it's not a posh hotel but it has a charm and I would stay here again .

We had a great room, great large sized bed with a great ocean view.
Hotel is definitely tired and needs maintenance and modernizing but for the price and the good nights sleep we were happy to overlook these things.
Restaurant was costly for what was on offer and be warned- although we booked parking, for which we were being charged, when we got there late, we had to park in public parking lot by railway station up the road - not impressed.

Booked at the last minute and chose a refurbished room. For the price the room far exceeded expectations-spotless, modern and comfortable with a fabulous sea view. Very friendly welcome and we would definitely stay again.

My wife and I booked for a weekend stay from the 21st to 24th March 2014. We booked a budget room, now I wish we had prior knowledge of how bad these rooms were. Throughout the room wherever you walked caused the floor boards to creak very loudly. the bathroom wall tiles were patched with odd tiles and in fact there were some areas of grouting being black. The towel rail was hanging off the wall because it had not been fitted correctly. The toilet door was fixed on a sliding rail device, however the door could not be closed correctly has the door had been hung incorrectly, At the time of booking no mention had been made of work being conducted in the bar/lounge area, Thankfully we only had a short stay. I can not comment on other types of rooms, but would not recommend using the budget rooms on offer.
