Upon booking with the Great Western I made it clear to staff that as I was booking a holiday for my partner's 21st birthday I wanted to make sure we had a lovely time and that the hotel would be a great place for us to stay whilst we had a nice holiday, however:

Reception staff were stuck up and not at all helpful.

Room was very small, had very outdated decor, looked nothing like the pictures, repairs were needed & could have been cleaner.

Was not made explicitly clear on the website that whilst on site parking was available you needed to reserve a space several weeks before arrival so my partner and I had to park 5 minutes away and drag all our belongings across a busy road to get to the hotel,
On arrival we found out that the reason we could not get a parking space was because the hotel had given all the available parking spaces to a convention that had booked in at the hotel - showing preferential service to higher paying customers.

After having dragged our belongings across the busy road we got into the hotel and went to use the hotel lift however it was being used by the hotel towel delivery contractors so we then had to walk up 5 flights of stairs and walk all the way across to the other end of the hotel with all our bags - if the hotel is going to provide a lift for customers they should ensure their staff either use the stairs or a separate service lift.

The breakfast service was overpriced and should have been included in the price of the booking given how little you actually got for your money by booking a room with the Great Western.

Whilst at the hotel restaurant we also had a very negative experience - we were left waiting an hour and twenty minutes for our meal, no member of staff came over to warn us or apologise about the wait for food, after reminding the staff that we were waiting on a meal we were told it would "be right out" only for it to take another 15 minutes before the waitress brought it out. Because we had to wait so long we ended up with two random strangers sitting on our table with us as they did not believe we were really going to be eating a meal as there was no food and not even any cutlery or condiments on our table. Upon arrival the food was barely warm, most of the meal was made up of frozen/microwave food which was surprising given the price of the meal suggested it would be made up of fresh produce. Not once during our meal did we have a single member of staff come over to check the meal was okay despite the length we had to wait, whilst tables around us that had larger groups of people on them consistently got check backs (once again suggesting that the hotel gives preferential service to groups that pay more). On the whole I would definitely not recommend the hotel restaurant it was over priced and left my partner and I feeling disappointed and hungry.

The hotel as a whole was very disappointing and I would avoid ever going back there again the only reason we did not leave the hotel when we got there was because the town was very busy and all alternatives were booked up.

Room Tip: If you want to choose a good room in Newquay don't bother going to the Great Western

This hotel surpassed every expectation that we had. We booked a superior double room with a sea view and the view is breathtaking waking up each morning to the view was amazing. The room was clean and decor was tasteful we had coffee and tea facilities and extra touches such as Cornish shortbread and hot chocolate sachets were much appreciated. The bed was massive and felt lost in it extremely comfortable you don't want to get out of it!. We had breakfast in the Hotels Restaurant outside looking over the beach in beautiful surroundings. We chose the Full Cornish breakfast which was lovely and cooked well the cereals on offer too were nice plus refillable fruit juice and coffee are available. The restaurant and bar is lovely and sitting in the sun with pimms overlooking the beach was breathtaking. I recommend this hotel it's grand facade and decor is inviting the views breathtaking what more could you want and Newquay is a beautiful place with lots to do. We gave this hotel a 4 out of 5 for service simply because we did feel that the staff could make more of an effort with their guests.

Room Tip: Choose room 123 superior double it's breathtaking.

Room looked out onto a wall and the bins a massive fan outside the window... Staff waking us up in the early morning swearing whilst smoking. When we complain they said if you dont like the room leave.. Gobsmacked! Gave us a limited free breakfast which was nasty & very small my 4 year old could polished it off and want seconds.. Could get other accommodation elsewhere locally as full booked so we was stuck in a mop cupboard for a further 2 days. The towels where never changed... We didnt order a room with a sea view we didnt expect a wall and bin view... And it might not have been so bad if we had some friendly customer service THE WORST HOTEL EVER DONT GO check the uploaded photo from amillerchip83

Thank you for your review of the Great Western Hotel. I am really sorry that you had such a negative experience on your recent visit and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise.

The Great Western is an older building which needs regular maintenance and there is a rolling refurbishment programme in place. We have several different room types and try to be as accurate as possible when describing rooms and price the lower grade rooms to reflect the standard they offer. We describe the room type you booked as “these un-refurbished rooms are compact and overlook the hotel service areas” I am sorry if you feel this did not adequately explain the view from the room. I have taken your comments very seriously with regards to noise made by staff and will be looking into the points raised.

Due to being fully booked during your stay we were unable to move you to another room, this is why we offered to help you find suitable alternative accommodation in Newquay. You declined this offer and as a gesture of customer goodwill we suggested a complimentary breakfast for you both. I am surprised at your comments regarding the full Cornish breakfast as this comprises bacon, sausage, fried egg, baked beans, tomato, mushroom, toast and unlimited tea or coffee.

Once again I am sorry that the overall experience was disappointing.

We went on Sunday and had their Sunday lunch, beef with all the trimmings. The veg. was not soggy and plentiful. The staff were very helpful and the toilets clean. The hotel is spacious and the tables are not on top of each other. Really welcoming for children and there were a lot of families eating. There is a good selection of drinks e.g. real ales, milkshakes, nice wines, tea and the hotel staff are barista trained. The views from the windows are fantastic over the sea at Newquay. A really nice couple of hours spent in nice surrounding.

1: we got a room that we definitely were not expecting! As a couple we bought a twin room as it was £30 cheaper than for a double room, we just pushed the beds together, and the room looked pretty poor
2: £5 parking a day! We parked round the corner for free £7.50 for room service! £12.50 just to stay in bed an extra few hours!
3: could see a naked man in his hotel room from ours, not a good view
4: expensive
5: like the hotels hand dryers in the ladies toilets
6: no shower, even though there was a sign saying caution hot water when using the shower, had to bath with low ceiling and banged head
7: nice friendly staff
8: room came with some good shortbread
9: beautiful view
10: terrible decor
11: thin walls! Can hear more than you want to
12: cool bar staff, liked the manager
Basically.

The only bad thing I have to say about this stay, was our choice of room. So not the hotels fault. We booked a budget room, which would be perfect if you wanted to spend hardly anytime in your room, however wasn't really suitable for us. It was far too small and so hot. We will book a sea view room next time.
Bar, food, breakfast, view and staff all great, as was location.
Can't wait to go back!!
