“Great place, tiny room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed in a premium room and it was clean, welcoming and had great room service; however, it was so small we barely had room for our luggage. We kept stubbing our toes on things! But overall very good and nice, caring service. Restaurant/bar had great food and drink too.

Pro's:
Excellent friendly staff.
Easy and efficient check in/out
Superior room very fresh and comfortable
Amazing views from superior rooms (not the other rooms)
Nice seating area at the back with sea views.

Cons:
Hotel very dated, creaky floors and thin walls!
Bland boring food - ate out after the first meal.
On a very busy casino filled street (would reccommend street view), this may be fine for others but a con for us.
Parking - have to pay £5 a day and is very limited however there is further parking down the street and staff were helpful when someone else parked in our reserved space.

For us personally we found we were driving a long way to go to the seaside peaceful retreats we expected, not the hotels fault, but this area doesn't suit a quiet weekend away.

Room Tip: Wouldn't reccommend anything but the superior rooms, worth the little extra cost, massively fres...

The staff at the Great Western bar / restaurant are always lovely, but I don't know what's happened to the food. It's over-priced and bland. The menu has changed in recent months and is now very poor value for money. The terrace has great sea views, so nice to stop for a drink, but sadly can't recommend the food.

I visited the Great Western with my girlfriend in July and spent 3 days there before heading off to Devon. In contrast to the restaurant downstairs, the hotel is dated and needs serious renovating. Our room which was a budget room wasn't big enough to swing a cat in, looked like it was last decorated in the 70's and was terribly noisy, receiving all the through traffic around the hotel and hearing every step made, door opened/closed etc. We did consider upgrading after the 1st night to a sea facing superior room which was considerably more expensive, but much larger, with up to date furniture and dressings and a large balcony. We then met another couple the following morning who had said room who complained even more so than us that it was the worst nights sleep they had ever had in a hotel, on account of the noise. We complained to the manager, but nothing could or would be done about it and all he offered us were ear plugs!!!! As such, we left with a very bitter taste and would never return to the Great Western Newquay ever again!

Myself and my partner have just got back from an amazing 2 night stay at this hotel. Originally we were staying in a double room however when I booked it through booking.com I had mentioned that this was a getaway to celebrate our recent engagement and anything they could do to make this special would be most appreciated. Upon arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a lovely receptionist (we didn't get her name but she was absolutely lovely and very helpful) she congratulated us on our recent engagement and told us because of this they had upgraded us to the bridal suit at no extra charge for our two night stay. We were over the moon and once getting to the room found a bottle of wine in an ice bucket and a sign wishing us a happy engagement from all at the hotel. We had the most amazing sea view... we literally hung above the beach and could hear the waves. The sun terrace out the back of the building is beautiful to watch the waves and the sea and we enjoyed a few drinks here of an evening. I would recommend for anyone to stay here and if its a special occasion make sure the hotel are informed because they try to make the occasion as special for you as they can... we would definitely go back :). Any reviews saying that this hotel is a little dated are correct however its an old building that's been there for a long time and we believe it had character, good amenities and the staff were brilliant... what more do you want? anyone complaining about this hotel it is pure snobbery!

what a great location for a hotel right on the cliffs overlooking the atlantic ocean , great big beer garden , excellent array of different beers , lunchtime and evening food excellent ,but what a let down for the breakfast , absolutely horrendous. we took the £8.50 option we just sat to eat our cereals and out came the breakfast (no go} The waitress brought it back 10 mins later same breakfast tried to be kept warm but virtually cold , eggs like rubber and very small breakfast just enough for perhaps a 3 year old £8.50 for that! So the breafast would definately be a nono , just go out to the main road and there is loads of breakfast establishments in particular one just 3 or400 yards towards town oceans cafe absolutely first class . Our room was very spacious and clean and what a view out over the sea the only downside was i think every floorboard in the room creaked when walked on as was many of the other rooms and the stairs and corridors which was a pain with people coming in late , would definately stay there again but breakfast elsewhere

Room Tip: ask for seaview or 1st and 2nd floor rooms top floor are i believe quite small

First impressions-you couldn't get a better location or views over Newquay from this hotel. However I booked a single room as this was the only one available. The room was tiny-I can only describe it as an attic room with a bed tucked under the eaves. The bathroom desperately needed updating-the sink and toilet was avocado with a black plastic toilet seat. The shower was hanging from the wall. The toilet didn't look like it had been properly cleaned in quite a while. There was also a lot of noise from outside the front of the property which resulted in a very disturbed sleep..

Room Tip: Avoid the single rooms on the 2nd floor
