This is a charming old hotel with stunning views of the beach and sea. My room was 226, which was a large size, with king bed (the mattress was a bit too soft for me), sitting area, vanity/desk, dresser, wardrobe closet and tea/coffee maker. The bathroom was up-to-date and had a wonderful heated towel rack. The water pressure was rather low, but that is a minor thing that often can't be helped. There were 3 windows in the room, all of which opened for a fresh breeze since it was quite mild. The room was so pleasant that I enjoyed sitting near the window watching the surfers catching the waves.

The staff were friendly and went out of their way to accommodate. I arrived too early for check-in, so they held my bags behind the desk while I walked around town. The hotel's location is right in the center of town so shops and restaurants are nearby. If you know that you will arrive early it's a good idea to contact the front desk before you travel to request early check-in.

Breakfast is served in the Steam restaurant, which adjoins the hotel. There are lots of options on the breakfast menu, but if you're in a hurry, you can just get the continental breakfast bar. Coffee is made to order and it's very good.

To the rear of the restaurant are doors that open onto an outdoor seating area, with a playground and access to the beach below.

Stayed here for 2 nights from 29th-31st January 2017 Our room was 124 which was a premium room on the 1st floor with stunning sea views a large double bed ,T.V with freeview channels, telephone , bay window with seating area , 2 chairs and a table and tea/coffee making facilities and a selection of biscuits, dressing table with mirror and stool , triple wardrobe with shelving and hanging space and a full length mirror. The bathroom had full bath and shower over it , pedestal sink and toilet and free toiletries and a hairdryer and lovely crisp white towels. The room was spotlessly clean as were the other parts of the hotel .
We didn't eat in the hotel but from what we saw of the food it looked really nice.
The Reception is manned 24 hours and the staff we encountered were very pleasant and polite both here and in the bar/restaurant .
Onsite parking is limited and costs £5 a day , we were lucky to get a space but if not there is parking nearby .
The location couldn't have been better , right in the heart of Newquay with a bus stop right outside and the railway station just up the road .
Plenty of shops / bars within walking distance as too is the beach , this hotel has it's own access to it but a steep climb up steps or a road back to the main street/hotel.
The only reason I didn't rate this hotel as excellent is the fact that there were refurbishments going on and yes I understand they do these out of season with as little distress to guests as possible but we were not informed of these and it was quite noisy as they were re-laying the carpets , which when we were in our room you'd swear they were in there with you when they were actually down the corridor .Saying this I would definately stay here again and recommend it . Great value for money .

Stopped in the adjoining bar to the Great Western and enjoyed a very pleasant drink and cake! Bar staff were very friendly, coping with three generations! We did not visit the hotel as such but if it was as pleasant as the bar it should be very good!

Stayed here for one night room very dusty, toilet could have been cleaner, no shower curtain, so difficult not to get water all over the floor even though it was a good shower. I think the room had been out of service & had not been freshened before being let again.

We stayed with our 3 year old for a family funeral 19-22 Jan. Our room was a premium family room number 119. On arrival our room was a good size with a Hugh comfy bed and lovely bed settee already set out for our son. The room was very clean and the sea view from 2 windows was lovely. On the first night there was no heating on despite it being bitterly cold outside. Our room was freezing and we ended up sleeping in clothes! After my husband spoke to reception the following morning this was sorted to a point . It was better but by no means warm. The hotel is old and as such very creaky ie you can hear people above walking around and banging doors etc. The staff were friendly and helpful. We parked on the overflow carpark for £5 per day and had no trouble finding parking.

Thank you for your review. We are glad that you like our spacious Premium Family rooms although, we are terribly sorry that it wasn’t warm enough for you. The Great Western Hotel is a 64 bedroom hotel that can sometimes take a while to heat up. Never the less we will be investigating this to make sure there isn’t an issue with the heating in this room. We hope you visit us again and we will be sure to keep you nice and toasty! Emma Head receptionist
