“Perfect for kids!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

Just got back from a fantastic week at the Sands, & missing it already!

This was the first holiday since having our kids (aged 2 & nearly 4) that felt relaxing! The meal times are set up so that there is a choice of eating in kiddie chaos, safe in the knowledge that your kids won't be the only ones making a racket, or having some adult-only time in a civilised setting later on, with the help of the baby listening service and/or kids club.

Our kids loved the kids club, pool, soft play, bouncy castle & the outdoor play area, and we loved the spa, free wetsuit & body board hire, & the 3-course meals each night.

I agree with some of the reviews that they don't always get the food right (more dressings and much less onion on the salads would be a good start!), but it was generally a pretty decent standard, particularly for the price.

It's also in a good location near some superb beaches & lots of family-friendly days out.

We picked this hotel for a short family break strictly based on the glowing Tripadvisor reviews and felt it didn't quite deliver.

We stayed 3 nights at Sands and and our initial impressions were the hotel lacked wow factor and made no statement but functioned in the manor it was designed to - purely family holidays. The hotel does a great job on providing an easy life for parents with plenty to do for young children. The staff were great and always very helpful. The food was ok, my wife didn't eat one of her main courses one evening we didn't say anything as the staff obviously care and didn't want to create any fuss. Not what I'd describe as a genuine restaurant experience.

Our room was ok decent enough space, view was a bit of a let down due to the busy road and compared to some we've had in Cornwall before. Bed was very soft and poor drying facilities for wet towels. A glass shower door made it difficult to bath our 2 girls, 7 months & 3. Sheet in the cot was poor and ruffled up straight away, a potential hazard. Baby listening service worked well.

On booking over the phone and discussing the hotel layout I chose to be on the ground floor(?) so we could access our room with a double buggy because there is no lift. However the person on the phone that took the booking didn't seem interested and failed to mention there is no ground floor and the sea view rooms can only only be accessed by stairs. After working this out on arrival I asked if we could go be moved to the top floor but by this point all those rooms had been taken - irritating!

It was a bit of a slog getting in & out with 2 young children and the clobber they need with all the fire doors along the corridors and no access for a buggy.

Spa was very busy due to local demand so book in advance if you wish to take advantage. The treatments we had were good.

Sands do try hard to create a great family holiday experience but it somehow doesn't quite live up to expectations. We were disappointed on arrival but could see positives through out our stay but not enough to bring us back. We did discover Watergate Bay Hotel which I think would suit our needs better. We had 2 fantastic lunches there in a stunning location with views to match!

Never thought it would be possible to have a relaxing holiday with two small children - this hotel has thought of everything to make it an easy, relaxing holiday for families. Lots of fun things to keep the sprogs occupied, fantastic facilities, rooms are spacious, modern and comfy, staff are unbelivably helpful, kids club was fab and the listening service - well to get to have a grown ups only dinner - what a treat!! The food was fab as well - and there was room service for when we didnt feel like living the little ones. Definately going next year!!!!

THE ROOM. We had a Contemporary Suite on the 1st floor with a sea view. The rooms were a good size, clean and nicely decorated. It was all fine until we realised that there was no safety catch or latch on the door and the layout is such that you enter via the children's bedroom. Our 3 year old was able to turn the lock and pull down the door handle. The only thing that kept him from pulling it open was its weight. So each night after we put him to sleep, we had to pull the extra single bed to block the door (which opened inwards thank goodness). This really bothered us as every hotel we have ever stayed in has always had a safety latch of some sort. This is the main reason we will not be returning to Sands Resort.

THE FOOD. Dinners were average. I would've given it a "Good" rating for variety but it was the little things that let them down: salad without a drop of dressing and none on offer to do it yourself, desserts that were overcooked. Breakfast was the same exact thing every single morning. Unless you really love your greasy fried brekkie, I recommend exploring Newquay or a few of the nearby towns for other options. Or bring your own milk, cereal and fruit as there are refrigerators in the room.

FOR KIDS. This is where this hotel had a lot to offer. Indoor and outdoor pool, football field and play areas. It wasn't as big as we thought it would be and we were lucky that we were there during the quiet season as I can only imagine how crowded the outdoor play areas must get in the summer. We rarely stuck around after breakfast, instead choosing to go off exploring the Cornish Coast.

STAFF. I have to say, they were lovely, friendly and very helpful when our little one got sick one evening. In the restaurant, the food was always delivered quickly and with a smile.

Sands has lots of potential but until they sort out the safety issue with the hotel rooms doors, we wouldn't feel comfortable staying there again.

I'm sorry that you found the door lock a problem.

The primary issue for the hotel is for the safety of our guests and fire is the greatest risk of all in a hotel.

Best practice for fire safety dictates that hotel door locking systems should be able to open from the inside from the crawling position with one downward pull of the hand. Any further locking system could hamper escape in a smoke filled room. (In the days of key locks we had an incident where a guest set fire to a bean bag in the microwave and then couldnt find his key which was under some clothes, he only escaped after shouting for help and waiting for a staff member to arrive with a master key.)

We will certainly check with the fire department to see if best practice has changed and would allow additional locks.

Currently we do offer baby stair gates to be fitted outside of the door and we do have rooms where the main door enters the parents room first.

Thank you for your other kind comments.

Please keep in touch in case things change on the lock front.

As keen long haul travellers over the years, a uk 'child friendly resort' would have been our worst nightmare a year or so ago. But with our one year old little girl, my wife and I conceded to our circumstances, booked Sands and went with an open mind.

What a great choice. This place is set up for people with young children like you wouldn't believe. The outdoor areas are well kept with playgrounds, outdoor pool, putting, bouncy castles - stuff for kids of various ages. Our room had a sea view straight out front with separate room with bunks, a single bd and a cot for our baby whilst the main sleeping/lounge area was well equipped. The hotel itself has games area, indoor pool, restaurant and bar area but its the details and way they run all of this that makes it work so well.

The pool has a wet playpen for when adults are getting changed. The rooms have step ups and bottle warmers. The restaurant has kids meals at 5 - 6 pm where they layout kids meals (and catered very helpfully to our little ones allergies) the kids throw food all over the place but the staff just clear it all up whilst whilst adults can go upstairs, get ready, flip on the baby listening device & head out for adult dining and a few drinks at the bar afterwards.

The breakfast and particularly the evening dining which was all inclusive in our package surprised us in terms of quality - it was really very good and they set out separate areas for those dining with kids or those that want adult only.

It's not a 'posh resort' as such and we didn't expect that for the price, but that said it's good accommodation, great facilities, a tightly run ship and with super friendly staff (I have to mention Kelly who was particularly nice & helpful to us). Overall too good to be true? It just might be and if you have young kids we don't hesitate to recommend.

We had such a great time at this hotel. It was fresh and modern! We took a 10 and 2 year old, both had a great time. The rooms were clean and well thought out! We couldn't hear any of the other guests in the next rooms.. This hotel took the worry out of eating with children and the food was fast and tasty.. The children entertainment each night was very good. We really enjoyed how relaxed a holiday with children could be.. We look forward to going back

Room Tip: Pool view room.

I stayed at Sands in August with my husband, three children and their partners and my five grandchildren aged between three and nine. We all had a wonderful time and I thoroughly recommend it. Good sized rooms, excellent facilities and really good food for both children and adults.

We all swam in the indoor and outdoor pools, played golf, tennis and table tennis (so popular they could do with a second table for when the weather is wet!)! The maze and children's playgrounds were also great fun.

The beaches nearby are really lovely as well so we left the car in the car park for our entire stay.
We sat with the children while they ate at the early sitting after which they watched the entertainment which was mostly very good, especially the puppet show. At about 7 pm the children went to the Kids Club, which they absolutely loved, so we all enjoyed a relaxing adult dinner at the end of the day. The restaurant had a great ambience and all the staff were efficient and helpful.

Only two very slight negative comments: we were all in adjacent rooms and when we came back from the beach and all wanted showers / baths at the same time the system could not cope so the water pressure was rather poor. Not sure what they could do about this though...? Only other problem was on the Saturday evening for the children's teatime it was really busy and the staff were struggling to deal with the demand, although they all did their best. But these were only two very minor details in an otherwise perfect holiday!
