“First visit........not disappointed”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

Have been a long time getting around to writing this review....apologies to Sands. I have heard a lot about this hotel and I was not disappointed. I spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend here in the company of friends. First impressions on arrival were ...WOW. The spacious reception area has a calm and welcoming atmostphere and all the staff we met reflected that ethos. My room was beautiful, clean and comfortable, with a very modern bathroom, and had all the facilities you would expect. There are so many things to do around the hotel so we took advantage of the Spa, I haven't had a back massage for years and it was so good, and a few laps around the indoor swimming pool, which I found peaceful and relaxing and again beautifully kept.
We enjoyed 2 evening meals in the restuarant, both three courses. Lots of choice, all good quality and beautifully presented withsuper service from the staff....nothing was too much trouble. And the same at breakfast, masses of choice from the buffet, continental and full english.
What I found so delightful about this hotel was the number of young families staying there, enjoying all the same facilities as us, plus loads more, and all treated with the same friendliness and respect.
Sands is located in the perfect area. I have never been to this part of Cornwall before, the walks, just 5 minutes from the hotel, and beaches are spectacular.
Thank you. I'll be back.

I don't normally write reviews and think this review should reflect sands accurately. I have high standards but am not unnecessarily picky/trying to find faults where there aren't. We are a family of 4, we have two boys aged 2 and 6 months.
First impressions are good, sands is just back from the cliff top so has beautiful views of the sea.
We arrived at 9pm at night and thought we had missed dinner, what we didn't realise was that the sands team had tried to ring us to see if we wanted food saving, a lovely thought.
We had help carrying our bags up the stairs, a lift would be handy but we got used to the walk. Our room was on the first floor overlooking the sea, it was a contemporary suite. You walk straight into the childrens bedroom then through into the adults bedroom/sitting area. It was welcoming and felt as though it had been freshly painted. Everything was very clean and smart.
The room was cleaned every day and hoovered, all the staff were very pleasant and I thought put a lot of care and attention into their job. They always had a smile for us.
The food was very nice, the breakfast was simple but really well done I.e. Everything was hot and good quality. We had lunch a few days and enjoyed the soup and paninis, we had a pasty one day which wasn't good as it was soggy. Dinner was 3 courses and was good quality, we felt effort had been put into the menu to try and provide variety for guests staying a full week. It seemed like there was local produce on the menu, seafood etc. Drinks were a reasonable price.
Most nights the children ate at the kids dining (4.45-5.45) and we put them to bed and used the baby listening service to have a meal by ourselves. The family dining doesn't start till 7 which was too late for our children, if this had started at 6 it would have been better for us.
There was so much to do for little ones, we didn't get good weather a lot of days but we enjoyed swimming (the pool was spacious and very clean), the park, maze and bouncy castle on site.
There was also childrens entertainment but our children were a bit young for it. There is a crèche/ kids club on site, we didn't use it as we felt our children would be happier with us.
Outside of the hotel there was porth beach which is 5 minutes down quite a steep hill, we also took the children to padstow which is lovely (rick steins restaurant is here but you need to queue!), lappa valley railway and Newquay. Watergate bay is a few minutes away.
It was such a chilled holiday, we really enjoyed ourselves and we will definitely be returning!

We had a lovely week here in July - the staff are very friendly and it really is set up for small kids - the play area is huge and you could spend a day around there - and the soft play area inside as well as kids club activities went down very well...be good to get back again

Room Tip: Contemporary suites might be newer than pool suites

We normally go self catering but decided to try bed, breakfast and dinner at Sands. Room was lovely (No31) and ideal for two adults (sea views from our bed) and for our 16 year old son who had his own twin bedded area with a door separating him from us. The highlight for us was the food. Three course meal every night of amazing quality. We are great fans of the TV programme Masterchef and felt as though we had dropped in to an episode. The separate adult only eating area was blissfully quiet. Hotel staff so friendly, polite and helpful. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and our room was cleaned every day. The free use of wetsuits and body boards was a real bonus and needed in the chilly Atlantic waters. Would certainly recommend this hotel. There is also lots to do for younger children if you have them. Many thanks to all the staff who made our stay so pleasant and a special thank you to the young staff members who welcomed our son into their football match for a couple of hours during their mid day break - it was the highlight of the week for him.

Room Tip: Room 31 on the top floor has great sea views and sunsets over the sea. Very high ceilings make the r...

We stayed at Sands for a 3 day break with our 2 kids (5 and 1yr) and my Mum. Our contemporary suite was very pleasing, spacious and with everything you could want. On entring the room off the corridor you go straight into the twin bedded room which also housed the cot. There is no opening window in this room which makes keeping it cool a problem. We had the fan on all the time to try and cool it and luckily the white noise enabled our kids to sleep well.
The decor of the adult room was far superior and modern. The bath was a tad small (clearly encouraging you to shower) but suitable for bathing kids. My only gripe was the shower door wasn't sealed well so you ended up with a huge puddle on the floor.
The food was good and service very effcient and quick. Let's face it travelling with young kids is never going to have finesse but having stayed at the nearby Bedruthan Steps before we felt the quality was poorer. For example one night I had beetroot with goats cheese. What I received was two slices of cooked beetroot, two tiny squares of goats cheese a few croutons with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. It was something a GCSE student could knock up. Equally we felt the wine staff could bother a bit better - bottle were plonked on the table without undoing the screw cap or allowing you to sample it. Equally we had lunch there everyday as it was very reasonably priced yet if we ordered the same thing more than once, each time it would be different e.g. one day the greek salad had egg the next it didn't.
In terms of atmosphere I thought the kids teas were more civilised than that at Bedruthan and the quality of them far better (healthier too). The family dining was more chaotic.
All the staff seem very young but other than the grumpy blonde bar lady they were all extremely friendly and helpful and deserve praise.
I'd also recommend the hairdresser who did great kids cuts at very affordable prices and the massage in the spa was fantastic.
There's plenty to do outdoors but internal facilities are restricted. The soft play (which is more a padded room than soft play house) is only open when the activity clubs are closed and the indoor pool will only permit 22 people at a time, 3-4 being very busy. The evening kids entertainment is a great offering but variable in quality, we saw Billy Wiz (brilliant), circus skills (OK) and party games (OK but too short duration).
All in all we had a nice time and I will probably return.

Our son, daughter in law and 3 grandsons aged 4 years, 2 years and 8 weeks invited us to spend a holiday with them at Sands. We haven't holidayed in a hotel in England tending to go self catering so wondered how this would work with 3 young children. We had a brilliant time at Sands. I can't speak highly enough of the staff, they had so much time and patience with all the children especially the restaurant staff. There was plenty for the children to do and loved the entertainment in the evening provided for them. The food was excellent, needless to say we are now on diets! The babysitting service worked well as we used them so we four adults could eat our evening meal after the children were asleep (we did take baby with us)! The room was great and the service excellent. There is nothing we can gripe about. None of us wanted the holiday to end and the boys couldn't understand why we had to come home. We would certainly recommend Sands as a great family holiday hotel.

Room Tip: Waking up to a sea view was great.
