I stayed at Sands with my husband and children aged 11 and 8 for a week in July. The weather was not great, however there were lots of organised activities for the children and these were free for our children's age group! We found ourselves dumped in favour of 'club' each evening, however there were some quality groups on in the evening for adults. We stayed in a 'contemporary suite' which I have to say was the biggest room we have stayed in as a family of 4. Very clean and modern in design with a Queen sized bed for the adults, a modern bathroom and a separate sleeping area for the kids. Room was well equipped with iron and board, DVD players and Sony Playstation 2, flat screen T.V. and a fridge which is a godsend with young children. Food was nice, not exceptional, but tasty and good value for money, breakfasts exceeded expectation as although advertised as 3 hot items per day there were always 5 hot items to choose from. Children's teas offered more than the obligatory fish fingers and nuggets! Free wet suit hire, board hire, even bucket and spades and wind breakers was a really nice touch. Location is excellent for exploring, but beware very windy as on a cliff top, but once on the beautiful beaches you are more sheltered. I agree with other reviewers that the staff at Sands make the experience special, they all seemed happy to be there. We moved on to our usual hotel in Torquay after Sands and the contrast couldn't have been more marked with rude, complacent staff, we would return to Sands because we were made to feel welcome, we would not return to Torquay! One thing I cannot understand is the rates people have quoted, we paid a lot more than 168 per night, maybe that was because the room was refurbished? I did look at the pool suites but they were not a patch on the contemporary rooms and I would prefer to pay extra for the comfort. Overall a good experience, not sure if we will go again because we did a lot in the area and may like to move on. However, would certainly recommend Sands to families with young children.

We stayed at the Sands (Resort is a long stretch) hotel for a week in July with two children (8 & 5) after a week at the Bedruthan Steps hotel just up the coast. It was a hard adjustment to go from Bedruthan Steps to the Sands Resort in terms of the hotel comfort, luxury and level of food quality....although you get what you pay for...Bedruthan was 375 (Br Sterling) a night for breakfast, bed and dinner in an apartment vs. the 158 Br Sterling at the Sands for a family of four. As for the children, they did not have a preference...although the programs for children at the Sands were better organised and a better value. The difference was that the Sands staff were more friendly, more engaging and seemed to enjoy their work environment more...which influences your experience in the end. Some of the rooms are recently renovated and more modern and others are not...so pick well when reserving. The dinners were a good value considering you are only paying 10 pounds per meal and they were tasty comfort food although not gourmet. The housekeeping did a splendid job each day and organised the chaos in the apartment well. The playgrounds here are great. The pool outside was too cold for children. Overall, a good value for your money.

My friend and i took our young children (4 and 5 year old) for a few days break together and i cant stop thinking about it. once you get over the slightly 70s look of the place (think student halls of residence for the accommodation), everything else exceeded expectation. The number of activities available for the kids was incredible and the staff very capable. Our kids loved the childrens club and kept begging us to go back. The food was reasonable and meal times well thought through for those with kids (great to have kids club running in the evening so you could eat in peace if you wanted!). The rooms had recently been refurbished and were perfect for families. The location is also superb being so close to Watergate bay and Porth beach..and the whole place such good value for money. I would definitely recommend it and go back again.

we spent 5 nights in sands resort for a break as we just had a baby who was three months and a two and half years old boy. This hotel is ideal when you have young childen as it provides everything for you such as steriliser, microwave, paddling pool and a wonderful sand pit with diggers that my boy could not leave. also the club was very good i was worried my little boy would cry but he did not even notice when i left. Overall best hotel ever. the good was great and the staff very helpful.

We booked this hotel back in March, with a few spa treatments in mind for the weary parents and great facilities for our five year old daughter. A contemporary suite on the second floor with sea view was booked. Unfortunately I had an accident before our holiday (leg in full plaster cast) and advised the staff at Sands of my predicament - nothing was a problem.. we were moved to a suite on the ground floor and advised we could hire a wheelchair for our holiday, as other guests had done in the past. We arrived and were immediately impressed with the hotel staff, hotel layout and facilities, as well as the stunning views from our room and public lounges/bar/children's games room. The staff in the restaurant were superb, as was the food which we eagerly anticipated every afternoon! Our daughter did not want to go home - that is how impressed we were!

Yes the weather was great, but so was the hotel - the first time we feel that we have had a proper holiday since having children. We stayed in a ground floor contemporary room, which was excellent - modern, spacious, spotless with comfortable beds, proper cots, Cbeebies on tap, a fridge and even a playstation (which we didn't have time to use! There is nothing better than leaving the room in chaos with rice cakes and sand everywhere and returning to haven of calm each evening with beds made and towels all folded nicely and dirty nappies removed!

The food was good, and it was great not having to clear up the mess after each meal and we actually managed to 'eat out' every night using the baby listening service which certainly worked when my eldest fell out of bed one night!

We didn't use the childcare as the weather was great and the beaches nearby are magical, but the faciltiies looked great. We did love the pools, pirate ship sandpit and the play areas. We also didn't use the Spa, but will next time!

The staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble from helping with luggage to providing a list of child friendly beaches etc and everyone greeted you.

Thank you so much for a great week - see you next year if not before!

After reading all the reviews, we certainly weren't disappointed. So much to keep the kids busy and thankfully happy. With our children being 11, 2 and 1, we found it easier to take full advantage of the room service. We would certainly recommend staying at Sands resort, even if the weather isn't great. We stayed in October 2008 and found it to be a great base for exploring Cornwall. I'd also have to point out that the food and service was far better than expected.
