Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: From the local Cornish coast to the dazzling beauty of the Tropical Reef, Newquay Blue Reef aquarium has an exciting world of underwater adventure waiting to be discovered. More than 40 innovative displays vividly bring to life the sights, sounds and smells of the sea, whilst regular feeding displays, rock-pool workshops and informative talks provide a fun and fascinating day out. Visitors can enjoy the closest of undersea encounters with amazing aquatic life including seahorses, giant octopus, pulsating Jellyfish and fierce Piranha. At the aquariums heart is a spectacular coral reef display housed within a 250,000 litre ocean tank - home to exotic tropical species like black tip reef sharks and Omiros the rescued loggerhead turtle. As well as hundreds of brightly-coloured reef fish and a huge Southern Stingray. Enjoy the sheer beauty of the display by taking a journey through its very own underwater tunnel, as well as through a number of viewing portholes, a floor to ceiling window and even enjoy close encounters from the surface - where Omiros often likes to pop up to say hello! Situated on Towan Promenade in the heart of Newquay, Blue Reef Aquarium not only offers a beach on its doorstep but also an amazing experience, whatever the weather!

“Educational!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

People keep saying how small this place is, and yes it's small in area but this is so much to see, learn and read. I spent about 1.5 hours the first time I went though and came back later in the day to put in another 45 minutes (your ticket is good all day so might as well get the most out of it). I attended the octopus feeding which was very educational, learnt so much about octopi that I didn't know before. It was a great way for an out-of-towner to get educated about the Cornish waters and what's local. They do some great conservation work with breeding and have a really large focus on preserving our waters which every aquarium should do! They have a little bit of everything and it's well laid out. Staff were very helpful as I left my phone in the washroom, and someone recovered it (thankfully). This place is right on the beach which is nice. I've been to over 10 aquariums and I still really enjoyed this one!

“Expensive waste of time!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

No real indication of where it is unless you know Newquay - down the bottom of a big hill! Outside looks tired, massive queue. Lady on the desk responded like a robot when asked for a family ticket and got told my son did not qualify as he was too old at 14 years old ended up paying £36 for me, my husband, my son and six year old daughter. Walked in looks dirty and tired. Through into the first section not bad lots to look at but nothing eye catching, this seemed to be the standard right the way through. Staff giving talks could not be heard over the tanks and general noise, where's the microphones? Directions given by staff to the next feeding session/talk useless, good job it's small you can walk through this place in 30 mins and find things yourself eventually. Lots of signs/information plaques missing. Out into the cafe - looks like a doctors waiting room. Shop is beautiful, well it's going to be they want you to spend more money! Out to the kiosk to get a cold drink for us 4, two bottle of Coke (500ml) £4.70!!!!! My advice take a picnic and drinks and go on the lovely little swimming beach just outside.

“Small but good place to go when weather wet.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Bought entry with Tesco clubcard vouchers so was worth the money, not sure if I'd pay full price. My son enjoyed the quiz and the staff were very knowledgeable. Some interesting sea life including caimans, jelly fish, turtle, shark, seahorses. Even reading all the info boards and listening to talks we only spent about 2 hours in here.

“Small but lovely”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

The kids always like going to the Aquariums, we always seem to visit them no matter where we go. The queue for this one was quite large, but I put it down to the weather not being to great and people were trying to find something to keep them out of the rain and entertained. It truly is a lovely little place with plenty to see, bit expensive for the size but well worth a visit.

I have been to bigger aquariums but still found it a nice place to visit especially with my 6 month old who looked in awe.
