“Don't stay here if you have a choice”
Reviewed 23 July 2012

We stayed for 3 nights with Gold Crest. The hotel has an excellent, quiet location on cliff tops, 5 minutes walk from Newquay. The hotel staff are very friendly.
Unfortunately, it is let down by its tired appearance and need for refurbishment. The bedroom floorboards not only squeaked, they literally lifted as you walked across them. The bathroom was a mishmash of colours, with evidence of several poor minor repairs including disconnected overflow pipes hanging loose. The washbasin was in the sleeping area. On the plus side, linen and towels were clean and replaced daily.
Carpets and general decor need replacing throughout the hotel. In the dining room, two staff understandably struggled to cope with over 60 guests. When I complained about long delays between courses, the response was to ask the guests to help clear the tables!
In 2010, the manager responded to a review that the hotel is undergoing a room by room update. Two years on, there is no evidence of that.
If like us, you are on a coach trip you may have no choice but to stay here. If you book independently, do yourself a favour and go somewhere else.

Recently stayed at this hotel for 4 nights with National Holidays. The room that we were allocated was terrible. The wallpaper was coming off the wall, it smelled like a public toilet and therefore we had to leave the window fully open and close the en-suite door to get rid of the smell. The basin in the bathroom was cracked. There is a notice in the bathroom requesting that guests place the shower curtain in the bath whilst showering, unfortunately the shower curtain is too short, hence the floor got covered in water. The furniture in the bedroom itself was shabby, the curtains not wide enough for the windows and not secured properly We stayed dinner, bed and breakfast. The breakfasts were OK but the dinners were a different story. Everything was just tasteless except for the home made soups, but again here, you were given a great chunk of bread where the crust was hard and inedible. The holiday itself was great as it was well organised, National Holidays are really let down by this accommodation.

Room Tip: I do not believe any of the rooms in this hotel could be classed as good, the hotel as a whole is ou...

We stayed 3 nights with Gold Crest Holidays and were fortunate to have a sea view. Although clean with comfy beds, the room desperately needs attention: 4 poster bed with no drapes, loose and missing wallpaper, small wardrobe that wouldn't take a dress length and a computer desk for a dressing table, curtains off the runners and a tired bathroom. Tea, coffee and milk in room were replenished daily. The public areas were OK. The restaurant service was a strange regime; leaving you looking at empty plates for up to 15 minutes after the main course. The chef had some odd ideas about toast with starters 12mm thick toast with prawns on and a lettuce leaf constituted a prawn cocktail and pate was served in a similar manner. Breakfast was restricted in choice; menu states "Cereal OR fruit juice". Dinning room staff were very pleasant but under too much pressure. We were on a table of six and thankfully we all had a good sense of humour or things could have seemed far worse.

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a National Travel trip to the Eden Project. The hotel is in a beautiful location overlooking the sea, however inside is a different story. The room we stayed in was at the back of the hotel and was awful. Shabby furniture, no colour scheme, and the wash basin was in the bedroom, not in the bathroom, as one would have expected. The bathroom was terrible. There appeared to have been a hole in the bath which had been plugged, but was visible. Bits and pieces had been stuck on and there was no way I was going to use it. The room itself was spotless and towels were changed daily.
The food was edible, there was a choice on the menu, but service was haphazard. This was down to the poor waiter and waitress working under tremendous pressure.
Needless to say I wouldnt stay here, but with a lot of tlc the hotel could be amazing, it has so much potential.

Stranded in Newquay we spent 2 nights here. The room was clean and the bathroom OK except that the previous occupant had left washing in the shower room. The tea/coffee tray was supplied with enough for 1 tea and 1 coffee per person per day. Extra supplies could be purchased from reception - how mean. What do you charge for teabag? Reception staff friendly but bar/lounge area depressing and in need of a total makeover.
Dining room was large but we were made to sit facing a wall for breakfast which wasn't great.
LImited car parking. Very much an emergency stop over rather a holiday stay.

We have just had a 5 day stay from 18th to 22nd June 2012 at this hotel with National Holidays, and they should hang there heads in shame for sending people there. This hotel is in need of a total refit from top to bottom, and it is nothing like the photos that were taken in the 70/80s. Our room 123 was at the back of the hotel and was very small, like a box room in which there was one small flat pack wardrobe, one and small dressing table with six small draws. There was only one dinning room chair to sit on as there was no room to put another. The TV was a portable, set on the dressing table. The bed was comfortable and clean as were the sheets /towels. The bathroom had a shower tray only with a flimsy curtain. The meals were nothing to write home about and the portions were small. They call this the Narrowcliff ?? They should push it over the cliff!!!!

We stayed over at the Narrowcliff Hotel on Saturday the 26 of May 2012. The lady at reception,JEAN, was very friendly and very helpful. The rooms are spacious and we had the most stunning seaviews. Everything was spotless. If is only about 5 minute walk from Newquay towncentre . Opposite the hotel is a beautiful pathway along the cliffs with amazing views. At around 11 at night we went outside for a smoke and meet the night reception,ERNIE, What a great guy. he told us some much about Newquay and we only got into bed after midnight. The next morning we had a very enjoyable breakfast and Ernie specially came around to say good bye. We will definately stay at the Narrowcliff again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with seaviews.
