“Last minute getaway to Newquay”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

We were very impressed by the laid back atmosphere at The Metro. We thought that this is the ideal B&B if you have a young family as you can bring back a takeaway in the evening if you don't want to eat out. The continental breakfast from 8-11 was good idea as you had plenty of time for breakfast. We were in standard double with view over sports field which was nice. Lots of tea and coffee facilities including unlimited drinks in breakfast room. Very modern and clean B&B and comfortable room. We really enjoyed our stay thank you. Sarah

Where do I start... Going to to lay out each thing... THE ROOM IS £130ish but we got on the internet for just over £100 a night B&B and £3 p.n. parking

Room -
Positives - Very Very clean with nearly exclusive access to the veranda maranda...Brilliant views and our bed was massive and extremely comfy... Even though massive decking area was communal and the whole of one side was windows with full view it still was private and we were there in high season...
Negatives - No air-con so the room was roasting when you get in (Spain lovers will cope).. The bathroom was Very Very small with electric shower with the power of a sprinkler system and there were no tumblers in the room but you could take glasses from the bijou breakfast room so not really a problem.... The main thing that was a main thing... If you have shy kids of different sexes just pre or of adolecent age this room maybe a problem... THERE IS NO PRIVACY or room in the shower room to get changed... We had a nearly 12yr old lad and boy and girl twins of nearly 11....

I did speak to the owner about a solution which would be easy to do and suggested a thin curtain on a pole across from the toilet to the wall where the bunk bed are situated. This would work brilliantly for people to get changed after their shower etc and would only cost about £30 to do and would more than be worth it......

Oh and one thing the rooms are very basic and minimal... This isn't a bad thing it has all you need but one bedside table with slatted top a and wardrobe andchest of draws thats slatted with linen cover.... Like I say suited us fine but could of done with 2 wooden bedside cabinets to put drink on etc... Just saying...

Customer Service -

Positives.....
Extremely friendly when you talk to the staff and very helpful... We have NO issues about them at all and they also leave you alone if you don't chat to them.... This place is extremely friendly and child friendly

Negatives -
None

Breakfast -

Positives....
When we arrived we were dreading breakfast as there were plastic table notices saying help yourself, fill the dishwasher up, clear your tables and looked like that there would be toast and cornflakes and that was it.... HOWEVER even though I am a total FULL BREAKFAST kind of person this CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST was not bad... Not bad at all.... You can help yourself to as much as you wasnt...
Numerous Cereals
Coissants
Toast... White and Brown !!!!
Mini sponge cakes
Crumpets

OH AND THIS IS CLASS..... There is a hot chocolate/Coffee machine in the Breakfast room..... NEVER in 40 years have I ever seen one..... that was totally free of charge and made the best chocolate and coffee.... We got one at night and when you get up you can just get one.... GUYS THIS WAS BRILLIANT!!!!! NEVER TAKE THIS OUT haha!!!!!

Negatives - By the end of 3 nights really wanted a full english and there is nowhere about that you can get one without travelling 10 mins into town, pay for parking, trudge the kids, and possibly pay OTT as it's on average 20% higher prices than most places in the uk... but hey it is AWESOME location for a holiday.....

Location -
BRILLIANT..... 2 mins drive from Porth Beach (best and cheapest place to park is on the beach) but NO SURFING on this and if tide is out you have to walk 10 mins to get to the water... BEST CHILD FRIENDLY beach.... For us though this wasn't the best beach...
Lusty Glaze beach - 5 mins drive... This was an Awesome beach.... Surf for novices... Body Board for kids... Many shops, bar, surf hire and trinket shops actually on the beach... Also they do Jet Ski tours... EXPENSIVE though (not spain prices) £36 accompanied not driving, your sat on the back, £60 where you sit on the back and have a go up front driving but you are accompanied... or £120 where you are trained and then go out on your own with instructors on a 2nd jet ski....
THE ONLY ISSUE WITH THIS BEACH IS.... there is a steep cliff down and kills ya climbing up the steep path after a day surfing etc.... BY FAR THE BEST BEACH

IF YOU WANT TO SURF THOUGH the best beach is 10 mins drive and is Fistral Beach... Very windy and exposed but great for 10' plus waves...

The Metro location is however close to everything and for me worth it at internet prices ALL DAY LONG........

Here are some things just to consider for the Owner....

Put a dividing curtain up where we discussed
Put a curtain up at the window to stop the room heating up like a sauna (You do have curtain hooks up already and would help with privacy even though you do have vertical blinds there already....
Get a deal with a local cafe who do full english breakfasts so you can offer this and the cafe gets loads of business...
Tumblers in the room (as mentioned on 3 in a bed on TV) just for toothbrushes etc.....
Maybe get your outdoor pool back up and running and charge an extra £10 p/r p/n to cover costs....
Clear the path from the hotel to the football pitches at the back of nettles etc as good to use for the kids

All in All a very enjoyable stay and thank you very much....

Stu and Linz - The 3 kids Jack Haz and Mills

Room Tip: If you have the money get one with a bath with shower and if really flush and have 2 kids get ROOM 1...

we stayed at the metro earlier this year, we booked the budget room and found it more than adequate, the continental breakfast was excellent and you could eat as much as you wanted, the staff were friendly and very helpfull even finding maps and directions when we were on days out, and will hopefully be staying again.

Room Tip: even the budget room was good

Value: For £60 a night, you can spend it on some other better motels better than this. Dont even bother.

Quality: broken toilet that doesnt flush. Window blinds are old and didnt keep the sun out. Book shelves are rusty too.

Location: its about 15 minutes away from the town centre and the nearest supermarket is about 10 minutes away. There are some nearby chinese take away shop and also some hotel restaurants that cater for visitors around town.

Service: amazingly, the counter service is top quality. The receptionists were very helpful and recommend us the best place to have our dinner. They were very attentive towards our needs. There are also free coffee and teas at the reception.

Overall i would recommend my friends to stay here if they are on a budget or if they are passing by town for a night. Wouldnt stayed in this hotel for more than 1 night.

Here at The Metro we work extremely hard to ensure that our guests have an enjoyable stay with us and it is a disappointment to read a negative review such as this. I can assure you that had we been aware of any issues you had we would have resolved them for you. Maintenance are on-site 24/7 and a simple request to reception would have ensured that the problem was resolved to your satisfaction whilst you were here, saving you the trouble of leaving us negative feedback.

Regarding price, we are extremely competitive, and I (and many of our guests) believe that we offer excellent value for money, including a complimentary vending machine that is free to use day and night, as well as free wi-fi access for all of our hotel guests and a full continental breakfast all included in the room rate.

Warm welcome, nice room and a good basic breakfast. Excellent for the price. We found it a bit strange we had to pay 3 pounds for parking on the driveway for the hotel. Not in the city center but you will get there in a 15 min walk...

We stayed here 8-10th June. From the first time I spoke to Emma until check out the staff were excellent,so friendly and have a chat with you and very welcoming.
This was our first time to Cornwall and we absolutely loved it, esp our 3 kids who could not get enough of the rock pools on the beaches. We also went mackarel fishing and saw a seal.
The metro was the perfect base for us, clean, comfortable. The breakfast was continental style with plenty of choice.
The town centre and beaches are a 15 min walk and the views are unbelievable. Being from London we dont see such views too often!
Would highly recommend the Metro for anyone thinking of visiting Newquay.
We've taken back some lovely memories.
Btw dont miss having a cream tea! Yummy!
