“Poor Stay 18/6/12”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2012

We stayed in the hotel for two nights in a better room including breakfast and evening meal. The room was nice but did suffer from noise coming from the corridors. We did not manage to find a parking space at the hotel so had to park in the public car park next door with many other guests. We had to keep surfboards in the car as the hotel did not offer any secure storage which was a worry. The meals at best were pub grub, the service was a bit lacking - different member of staff for each course, continual errors with drink orders for both nights and the same for others seated nearby and one night they left us for an hour as they lost the main course order! No one explained the initial breakfast system and each day the hot drinks turned up with no milk. It seemed overall that there was not a responsible / senior member of staff at the hotel which was frustrating. I think for the money i was expecting more but really i think a travel lodge would give them a good run for their money and leave you with plenty of money in your pocket!

Room Tip: Book early to get a sea view room.

We stayed for one night as a little break in July, as we live only about an hour away on the same coast, so it wasn't at all a big break. Despite this, it was very enjoyable; the prices, in retrospect to the experience, were very good. The room was both cosy and crisply furnished, and very clean - as was the bathroom. There's lots of information about the area and things to do for all interests and ages, which I imagine that would be extremely helpful if you're not familiar with the area. Furthermore, we were offered 1 free surfing lesson each at the Extreme Academy during our stay, and although the weather wasn't good enough it just goes to show how this hotel can really cater for all tastes and offer a really diverse and fun experience even in a short space of time! The dining, though, was the highlight. I highly recommend the restaurant overlooking the beach - where the delicious food and stunning view (even in poor weather) battled for our attention! The hotel also has it's own restaurant, which again was memorably good. The food is all really fresh, and the staff and atmosphere are very complimentary of it.
I really recommend this hotel for anyone, but especially if you are new to or visiting the area; it's a really great base for exploring Newquay and has a truly fabulous location which the owners obviously have not underestimated in their investment in the hotel!

Room Tip: The rooms are all equally well appointed, so no particular one; we were nervous of staying in one th...

This is the place to go if you appreciate Cornwall and its charm, beaches, excellent food and first class accomodation, in a quality, but relaxed atmoshpere, where you can do as little or as much as you want, in this top class Hotel.
Well done for Cornwall, you put Torquay to shame, there is nothing to compare, We would come back time and time again!
You have also spent alot of money on The Hotel too! Its fab! And the swimmind pool, and its veiws, 10 out of 10!!

Room Tip: Maybe double check where your room is depending on what your needs are! Our room was lovely in ever...

Had exellent accomodation, pretty, spacious, tastful furnishing.
The staff is always very helpful and attentive. Prices vary - look out for special offers ( book yourself in the information section of their website.)
The Breakfast Buffet is very tasty and a there are very good choices available. Special requests are swiftly dealt with.
Restaurant within the premises is very good. Good food selection and very tasty. I personally prefer the food more than 15 Cornwall - but the chefs been there before....
The new Swimmingpool looks nice - the whole customer area is a beautiful set up.
An overall experience to look forward to.

Room Tip: A variety of rooms available to suit your budget. There are rooms available for persons , with speci...

Hotel looks amazing, a contender for best located for views in all of uk! Recently refurbished too-impressive. We for dinner in bar- bar staff very unhelpful, i asked if we could have a menu and when ordering they asked what table we were sat at, I said I don't know we've not picked a table yet but we'll probably sit outside on the terrace overlooking the beach - awkward silence- no help with table numbers or offer to come take our order once we found a table! I ran out side and found a table and ran back in so the barman could finish our order and get back to doing nothing behind the bar! Ordered bang bang chicken which tasted lovely and looked pretty... Until I found raw pink chicken pieces and a hair! Yuk! To be fair when I complained I got a refund straight away. No offer of alternative or anything to rectify the situation- service and food turned my stomach, we left our drinks and went to beach hut instead which was fab :-)

Stayed over the Jubilee week and had a superb family holiday!

The family were spread out over two rooms (77&11) both were very comfortable and spotless. 77 is in the coachhouse, which is perhaps quieter than the main hotel rooms.

The hotel staff are brillant, always smiling & nothing is too much trouble.
The new swimming pool is great and with the sun shining and the doors open it is as good as being out doors. The water temperature was just right.
Food in the brasserie is top notch and as a family of 5 we never found breakfast to be 'too busy'.
Our favourite spot following dinner if we were not on the beach was the 'snug' where the decor is first class and the ambience very chilled!
In summary, yes the hotel is expensive but if you want a quality family holiday/break by the coast then look no further!

Room Tip: Coach house is probably quieter overnight.

The main reason why we went to Watergate Bay was to visit Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant, it was part of a wider trip we were doing across the South West. When researching the area this seemed like the obvious choice of accommodation and how pleased we were we chose The Hotel. We are not surfers so we were not necessarily interested in the surfing and Extreme Academy side of things but the premise behind this hotel is what makes it so good. The owner wanted to create a surf equivalent of a ski resort, so you have the opportunity to train in surfing, hire your gear and enjoy apres surf looking out over beautiful views from the hotel bar. We didn't use any of these surf facilities we just enjoyed the immaculately designed hotel, the good food and excellent service. The hotel is really geared up for families but what is so clever about this is that if you didn't attend during a busy high season (we did - half term!) you would never know the focus is on families. The design is modern and sophisticated as well as being luxurious. Without the presence of children you would feel that this hotel is aimed at adults only. It is a wonderful place to stay and I would highly recommend it, surfer or non surfer!
