“The perfect place to escape from it all.”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

After a memorable holiday here as a child in 1997, i recently returned for a 2-night stay with my parents and sister. The hotel has been completely renovated and feels clean and fresh, modern and stylish. We stayed mid-week after the summer holidays were over and there was a happy mix of couples and families around the hotel, and although busy it never felt crowded.

The facilities on offer are exceptional. The "Swim Club" had a relaxing spa-type feel and the adjoining lounge was my favourite place to sit and relax. Comfy sofas next to huge windows offer amazing views of the beach and sea, and there is a small cafe/bar offering teas, coffees and light refreshments. The pool is fantastic with an infinity-type end that looks out towards the beach. A seemingly endless supply of towels are available within the pool-side changing facilities, where there's also lockers and a spin-dryer for swimming costumes. We found the best time to swim was around 1-2pm when most people were having lunch. The Scandinavian hot tub and sunbathing area outside felt very private and also had the great views of the beach.

The rooms were wonderful. Fresh and airy with plenty of space, tea/coffee/kettle facilities and a large safe big enough for a laptop. The bathroom was superb with an amazing shower complete with optional soft lighting, robes and two sinks. The staff were absolutely lovely and always had time to chat, i thank them for making us feel so welcome.

We ate in the restaurant on our first night and the food was fantastic. An great choice was on offer and everything was delicious. The same can be said for the self-serve breakfast which we thoroughly enjoyed. The hotel also has another restaurant/cafe/bar with outside seating that overlooks the beach - a great place to sit with a coffee and read the paper.

Down towards the beach there's a beach-side cafe which made excellent food (you can sit in or take away) and the surf academy which looked very friendly and reasonably priced. There's also Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant, which i believe the hotel can book you a table at if you wish.

All in all we had a fantastic stay, the only downside being that we couldn't stay longer!

Room Tip: Room 6 has a decking area, which was lovely to sit out on in the late evening.

We stayed at the Watergate Bay as a last minute booking and were offered a good Dinner, Bed and Breakfast deal. The hotel has been freshly upgraded and was spotlessly clean. Our room was nicely decorated and had oak flooring for that beachfront feel. The swimming pool area is amazing and again spotlessly clean. The service was warm and friendly with all the staff keen to please. The only slight downside was the price of the drinks. £11.25 for a pint of beer and a small glass of wine?! Ate in the dining room, food first class and the service quick and efficient. Will visit again!

We stayed here last year and had an amazing stay. The location was amazing, we didn't have a sea view but still it was wonderful just to be able to stumble out of the hotel onto one of my favorite beaches. The room was very nicely decorated, modern but not sterile, in fact I could have lived there! We went on a deal where we got 3 evening meals at various places and it was excellent value. The only let down was the expensive watery beer served in the bar.

My wife and I stayed a night at the hotel the day after we got married at the beginning of September. We stayed in a room which has a pedestal bath in the window and frankly, the whole experience from start to finish was second to none.
The room was amazing, the setting fabulous (we got up for a swim in the infinity pool at first light and then sat and watched the breakers roll in from the comfort of the hot tub on the decking outside). The food was great, the staff friendly and we could not have asked for a better start to our honeymoon. This hotel doesn’t come cheap, but ultimately you get what you pay for.

We've just come back from a weekend stay at this hotel. We have stayed here twice before and it never fails to satisfy. The new improvements to the hotel are amazing and make it even better than ever! The new pool area and sun deck are beautiful and the lounge area is so cozy with amazing views. I just did not want to leave! The room was gorgeous and the food in the restaurant was delicious. I do not have a bad thing to say about our stay here. I highly recommend it!

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are well worth paying the extra.

What a place! We stayed here for a couple of nights at the tail end of our honeymoon and had an incredible time. The view of Watergate Bay and surrounding area was so beautiful it could have been computer generated for perfection. The hotel itself felt very fresh, contemporary and vibrant and we were immediately put at ease by the staff there who were very friendly without a hint of corporate fakery.

The Living Space bar, unlike the vast majority of hotel bars, was extremely relaxing and airy with an incredible view and terrace and the menu was superb with a range of specials which we took advantage of and enjoyed. The Beach Hut was also brilliant, great view of the sunset, excellent hearty food and attentive, friendly service at decent value.

Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone!

Rarely does a hotel win me over the way the Watergate Bay did, it was like staying in your folks beach house (only decorated by an award winning design team!) with 5 star service. Other hotels need to send their staff here to learn how it is done.

The room was divinely decorated in a rich combination of sea side decor meets funky london hotel. From the restaurant and bar/deck the views were amazing, the pool is spectacular with views immediately facing the beach through huge windows, giving a seamless transition between pool and ocean; cliffs and paddocks. Next to the pool was a cosy room with magazines, rugs, gorgeous wingback chairs and a bar - again huge sweeping views.

Even though our room was inward facing, it was not a problem, in fact our only problem was that the bed was very lumpy (well loved!) and the room was quite hot (the weather was fabulous and unseasonably warm) there was not a top sheet on the bed, the quilt was too warm. But I am nitpicking. Oh and there is not a bar fridge in the room we were in, so perhaps ask when booking if you need one. (I am sure if I asked staff for a top sheet this would not have been a problem, but we were too tired)

The staff are very friendly and attentive, in fact they went out of their way for us.

We ate at the Watergate Bay restaurant and it was fabulous, the staff were on the ball and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were knowledgeable about all drinks and food on the menu's. We had the seafood pasta, clams in white wine sauce and chocolate cake as the sun set.

During our stay the crowd was a mixture of professional 30 something couples and cashed up families. I saw a group of 8 year olds eating Lobster in garlic butter sauce, something I have not seen before.

The breakfast was brilliant, the produce was farm fresh and the smoked salmon was to die for, so was the bacon and sausages.

Sadly we could only book one night, next trip to Cornwall we will stay a week, visit Jamie Oliver's FIFTEEN and take long walks around the incredible cliff tops.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough for a relaxed, funky beachside getaway. (incidentally our room was 116 pounds for the night - inward facing room number 11)

Thank you Watergate Bay Hotel for giving us a memorable stay in Cornwall.
