“Perfect place for my birthday.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2014

Excellent welcome, fabulous room, helpful and friendly staff. Setting perfect, pool and hot tub superb. Good food , the breakfast really sets you up for the day. We had a taste of the bay package for 12 people which was well organised and excellent value. The staff made my birthday an event to remember. Thank You
Dec 11th 2013.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the sea view rooms.

Watergate Bay Hotel has the perfect situation, right on the beach with fantastic ocean views from the main communal areas. The hotel has been well decorated and modernized and looks very sleek and chic. Perfectly suited for the Londoners escaping for a seaside retreat (which seemed to make up the bulk of the guests). We were there for a 3 night stay at the beginning of 2014.

Room - we were in Room 22, one of the "Best" rooms with a sea view. The décor is nice, light and nautical. Even though it is one of the best rooms, it was very small and we found it quite awkward. There isn't much surface space and a lot of the room is taken up with a roll top bath which looks great, but means there is nowhere to put a suitcase or to sit other than the bed. The small balcony actually overlooks the car park rather than the sea - so your sea view is through the windows behind the bath. The bathroom was tiny! I dread to think how small the standard rooms are. It was the beginning of Jan, but the room was absolutely freezing and there was no way to control the temperature in the room - the staff weren't very quick to provide us with additional blankets or duvets.

Communal areas - these are all decorated very well. I imagine they get very busy in the summer months as they were fairly heaving in January. This is clearly a very family friendly hotel, which is great if you have kids, but if you don't there is not much chance of getting away from the noise of children running around throughout the hotel at any time of the day. The "Ocean Room" which is part of the spa complex had a very small sign suggesting that it was an adult area, but that didn't seem to be enforced at all and there were kids making a noise whenever we were there. I appreciate as a family friendly place they need to cater to the majority, but I wouldn't recommend staying if you are after some peace and quite, or a romantic break, as it's not really an adult-orientated hotel. It would be great if the Ocean Room was kept to adults only as that would provide a space in the hotel for non-families to relax.

Food - we ate once in the Living Space area which had a lovely menu and good food. They also made some great cocktails. We didn't eat in the main hotel restaurant.

We came away with mixed feelings about the Hotel. It is definitely better than a lot on offer in this area of Cornwall, but although it is a well-oiled machine, it lacked the personal touch of a truly great hotel. For the prices they are charging, we hoped for a stay which was a bit more special.

Room Tip: None of the rooms have truly great sea views, so if we went back we'd be inclined to go for a bi...

Wonderful hotel, perfect location, great contemporary feel inside. Food fantastic, the service was the best we experienced in any hotel in Cornwall. Efficient without being over bearing.

Had the best mussels I had ever had ever in the Beach Hut restaurant near the hotel.

Amazing hotel for families, go there!,!

Room Tip: Complicated room choices, make sure you speak to them. Beds are divine to sleep in!

Have just got back from yet another wonderful stay at this fantastic hotel!! We stayed in Room 1 which is a glorious suite overlooking the sea... It was just perfect - with beautiful roll top bath overlooking the beach! We had a spectacular storm whilst we were there which was great to watch from a safe distance in our room. Food excellent, spent 'Burns Night' in the Beach Hut which was fun, wonderful massage in the Treatment Rooms in Swim Club - lovely relaxing atmosphere with friendly helpful staff :-) Can not wait to return in a few weeks for more of the bay.

A shame a previous reviewer had awful food as ours was outstanding. Came home feeling I was about to burst as we had so much to eat. From breakfast which had so much choice, lovely poached eggs, mushrooms that tasted good (usually in hotels they taste of the tin) and local sausages, which again we wouldn't normally eat but these were lovely. Choc croissants, fruit juice, grapefruit..... Could never manage lunch but what we saw looked good.
Dinner of a night was again very good and plenty of it. The salmon starter was so good I had it both nights. The fish cakes were huge and I really didn't need the chips which I ordered as an extra. The choc mousse was enough for 3 people, very rich but good. Liked eating in the lounge/bar, more going on.
The rooms were very comfortable, the bedding lovely. Only complaint was the bath took ages to fill, I ended up wallowing in a couple of inches (not an attractive sight) and it took an age to empty, also the sink.
You could just stay in the hotel and never move from the comfy sofas, just watching the sea but we did manage walks on the beach, swims in the pool and massages. The massage was the best we've ever had, very firm. Can't wait for a return visit.

Room Tip: Rooms very warm. We paid extra for sea view but not sure if this was necessary as they are all decor...

Everything about the hotel is spot-on. It has something for everyone, from the quiet bolt hole lounge overlooking the bay, to a vibrant bar with great food to a great swimming pool and sun terrace to lose yourself in your thoughts with the sound of the sea below. Rooms have a great shabby chic beach type of luxurious feeling, I loved them!

Have just returned from a 2 night stay. Overall, very impressed. Like a previous reviewer, we found that they were experiencing difficulties with the shared kitchen as building work was going on, but we had no complaints with the food itself, just the wait, the staff were on the whole very friendly and helpful, but it was severely understaffed, and as a result some of the staff weren't too happy, which was completely understandable. The rooms were clean, (although our shower did have discoloured grouting, being v picky!), but the sheets and towels did smell slightly of fried food, not very pleasant, I thought it was just me, but my husband agreed. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The facilities for surfers was fantastic. Locker room for surf boards and showers. Will definitely return.
