“FABULOUS LOCATION!!”
Reviewed 12 March 2010

Look out for Travel Zoo offers to this wonderfully situated hotel. We had a newly decorated standard room with a balcony and overlooking the sea! The staff were so friendly and the food excellent. The deal included a meal at Jamie Oliver's 15, as well as a lunch and evening meal at the Hotel. We would certainly return.

My husband and I had a wonderful few days in this friendly hotel. Our room was extremely comfortable, the food was absolutely excellent, and all the staff could not have been more welcoming, caring and attentive. It is perfectly placed for touring in Cornwall, and is in a stunning setting of its own

We stayed at the watergate and found it to be an "OK" place, some of the staff seem a bit disinterested in us mere customers, and the rooms could do with a bit of attention, but overall it was ok and we enjoyed the beach and the food. On balance if we had payed about 20 % less than we did we would of been happy, but we came away feeling that we had paid for an excellent hotel and services as portrayed in its website, but were only delivered an "OK" seaside hotel. Doubt we will return. also be aware the hotel has lots of building work going on at present.

I can highly recommend going to this hotel on one of their great value 3 day break offers which includes 2 dinners & 1 lunch. We enjoyed the dinner at the hotel more than the one we had at 15 restaurant. The young staff did a fantastic job,all with a smile on the face.Stunning location.

Rooms are clean, but since our stay last year they are showing signs of wear & tear.
Staff are very friendly & helpful.
Restaurant served good food, but staff seemed overworked & missed orders. The associated extreme academy beach hut restaurant serves nice lunch, but one of the waitresses was officious & rude in the extreme.
Swimming pool is dire & lets the place down - it was in need of complete refurbishment last year and now looks almost derelict.
Swimming pool changing rooms are good, but were dirty and do not appear to have been cleaned whilst we we there.
Some of the clientele over the weekend would have been more at home in Butlins.

We first stayed here in January 2009 in the Ocean View Wing. That was a 5 out of 5 experience - wonderful!! We could not fault the place at all!

Our return visit to the same wing of the hotel in February 2010 was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment by comparison. We found that the hotel cleanliness and standard of fixtures / fittings and furniture in the public area had declined somewhat, with a lot of tired / stained looking furniture in these area. The windows in the bar area were absolutely filthy and covered in greasy hand and finger smears, which rather spoiled the otherwise lovely views. The bedrooms also were looking more tired this time and we were left with the impression that most of the hotel managements efforts and focus were now being directed towards the expensive new development behind the hotel - which is also currently an absolute eyesore.
We note that this new development is also removing a large amount of the car parking space at the hotel - so in high season I really do not know how visitors will be able to park for free at the hotel?

It seems to us that The Hotel and entire Watergate Bay Location has become a victim of its own success and will soon be over developed and will lose its original appeal to some degree.

Our advice would be to go NOW before the development is completed and open for business, but expect the hotel to be a little less comfortable and luxurious than the price tag and hotel website lead you to believe.

On the plus notes we would say the staff are friendly and efficient, the breakfast and food in general is excellent and they do welcome dogs. The walks along the beach and views from the Ocean View Rooms are spectacular.

We will probably give this hotel another chance but it is such a shame that they have let standards drop. Also that they have opted for over development of the bay and are leaning towards concentrating their efforts on this large building project; instead of preserving the original charm and quality of the hotel and relatively natural and unspoilt beauty of the bay. Which, after all, is what made this place so wonderful and unique to start with.

We still recommend staying at this hotel but mainly for the area it is situated in and not for the hotel itself any more.

We arrived at the watergate bay hotel just 4miles north of newquay on the stunning north cornish coast in the depth of this year's very cold winter. I suppose with some trepidation.....ie cold rooms....dampness.....glum faces. something we english have come to expect in "out of season" England.
I WAS VERY WRONG.......from the moment of arrival we were greeted with smiling helpful faces in a warm vibrant reception area. close by was roaring fire with leather settees and beyond a grand stairway. to the right was the openplan dining room which supplied superb breakfasts and dinners......the dinners were excptionally fine and very good competition for the nearby restaurant "Fifteen". to the left was the large stylish bar/lounge with far reaching views out to sea and coasts.
the room....side sea view....was very comfortable...modern...roomy...large bed...spotless. warm...large windows and the shower room was stunning.

the watergate bay hotel, by way i suspect of a very clever managment team (and in turn a good staff team) is creating a very special experience for young and old alike in a warm relaxed atmosphere.
As in the hotels full name..... "extreme academy"....and being positioned by the vast (at low tide) beach. the opportunity for most watersports(or just watching) regardless of the time of year is possible as wetsuits and a variety of equipment can be hired on site.
There is building works currently going on behind the hotel and there is a feel that this small resort will very soon become a very classy destination.
