My wife and I have just returned from one of Alfa coach holidays to Newquay, unfortunately we were allocated one of Alfa’s sub contract coaches namely Aqua, before I go any further we also had the same coach company on our trip of Alfa’s to Llandudno, in June of this year, where the coach driver wasn’t very informative but the driver that took us back was one of Alfa’s namely Alan, and he was so much friendlier and spoke more to us on the journey home than the Aqua driver did all week. Anyway I digress, getting back to the Newquay holiday, after Alan picked us up on the feeder coach and then were transferred to the Aqua coach, again the driver John wasn’t at all informative, in fact we had to on several occasions to ask him when he wanted us back on the coach. When we eventually arrived at the Eliot hotel he told us to take our hand luggage and proceed to the reception, suddenly we was confronted by a stern faced faulty towers type manager, who told us all to get back on the coach so as he could tell us about procedure, you can only imagine the struggle that the old and generally weary passengers carrying all their hand luggage felt like.
The hotel itself wasn’t too bad; there was only one slow old lift so those that could used the stairs did so as it was quicker, the bedroom was adequate and nothing special, the lounge incorporated the bar and the entertainment stage with a small dance floor, there were other places you could relax away from the bar area but the seats weren’t very comfortable, the restaurant was light and aerie and the serving staff were very accommodating, we had a Manchurian lass waiting at our table who was very friendly and even organized for me to have chicken for the evening meal as there wasn’t anything on the menu that I liked for that day.

On the first day excursion the driver tried to speak to us using his microphone but couldn’t get the screeching noise to stop, which I might add played havoc with our ears, so inevitably was not very informative the whole time he was with us. On returning to our hotel at about five fifty, we didn’t have enough time to freshen up and change, let alone time for a drink before being ushered to the restaurant for our meal at six twenty, this happened on the two one day excursions, making it just one mad rush, instead of a leisurely holiday.
Now the worst is yet to come, as on the last day traveling back to Reading, we were told that we must change coaches twenty two miles north of Bristol, there we waited for the other coach to arrive, yet another Aqua coach, only to have to struggle off with all our hand luggage, this being a lot more than we came with, as you buy things for family etc too, then board the other coach with passengers from both getting in every ones way, and waiting for the said drivers to then swop cases from one to another, making us considerably late when joining our feeder coaches, where we all felt very embarrassed getting on board to have so many angry faces staring at us and asking where have we been?
In all this was nearly a holiday from hell, and it will be the last time that we will ever use Alfa travel firm again, and will return to using W A Shearings instead, as they seem to be much more organized and friendly.
From a disgruntled,
Mr & Mrs. Gunn

We stayed at the Eliot hotel in Aug this year, on a five day holiday with Alfa Travel. We were pleasantly surprised on our arrival at the size of our room which was more than big enough for two people, the bed was comfy and the shower was lovely and hot.
The food was excellent at every meal and there was a good choice of menu.
The staff were all friendly and efficient, rooms cleaned every day and you could even buy a packed lunch for your journey home.
This was our first time on a coach holiday and we enjoyed it immensley. The journey to Newquay was hassle free, the trips included in the price were excellent. We would not hesitate to book with Alfa again and would certainly recommend the Eliot Hotel.

My friend and I "both 30" stayed in the Elliot Hotel for four nights and would recommend it to anyone.
Its only a 2* but its very clean, the rooms are more than adequate ,who needs a HUGE room anyway?whats the point?
The entertainment wasn't to our taste its more for middle aged guests, but we didn't mind watching it because we wasn't in Newquay for a rave we went for a leisurely break so sitting at the "well stocked reasonably priced"bar was more to our liking than the pubs and clubs that were only a few minutes walk away.
The food at the Elliot Hotel was well cooked and tasty, you had a different choice on the menu and a chefs special daily, which our polite waitress brought to our table with a smile.
The staff were very easy to talk to from day one, like we were old friends something I've never experienced before at any hotel, they all made our stay very pleasurable.
As for Alfa coach tours,we'd like to thank them for a fantastic break,we were expecting a mediocre cheapo holiday but were very pleasantly surprised.
And a HUGE thank you to "Bill"our lovely coach driver, what a nice friendly man(makes a change to most coach drivers).
Overall our 5day Alfa Holiday at the Elliot Hotel was 5*

We stayed at the Eliot Hotel as part of an Alfa Travel coach holiday and we found the hotel a welcoming place to be. The hotel staff were all well trained and polite and the hotel itself clean and well maintained.
Food in the restaurant was excellent with a good choice which changed daily. The restaurant staff were extremely efficient and the four of us at our table all used to order different items and our particular waitress never wrote anything down but managed to get everything right first time!
Our double room was small but had everything we required, especially welcome were copious supplies of hot water at all times.
Although the hotel only has a two star classification I found it equal or better in many respects than many so called three or four star establishments that I have stayed in during my business travels. The absence of an ironing board and a telephone in our room were things we could manage without, appreciating instead the willingness of the staff to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
This was the first time we had travelled with Alfa Travel who’s parent company own the Eliot and our whole holiday was extremely enjoyable. Our polite and helpful driver Tony had everything organised for us, making sufficient stops on our long journey down to Cornwall from north east England. The weather was sunny and warm during most of our trip so the air conditioning on our comfortable coach was very welcome.
Overall I would find it difficult to find anything to complain about on our five day holiday, enjoying the trips to Heligan and Eden which were included in the holiday cost and as a result we have now booked another Alfa holiday.
Watch this space for another report!

My husband and I together with two friends went on a five day coach trip to Newquay, Cornwall, and stayed at the Eliot Hotel. The hotel is situated in an excellent position on a quiet road at one end of the main street and two minutes walk from the main road. It is about a 10 minute easy walk to the harbour.

We were a little dubious about staying in a 2* hotel but were pleasantly surprised. It was a bitterly cold week but the hotel was warm and welcoming. The room was a good size with ensuite double sized walk in shower. There was a TV and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The water was always hot, towels were good quality and soap and shampoo was provided. Apparently a hairdryer is available at the Reception.

All the staff were very friendly especially the Manageress [June] and Dave who both waved us off on Friday morning. The food surpassed our expectations and was always hot and well cooked. We never had to wait long for our meals and, although the waitresses sometimes got a little mixed up due to their lack of English, they were willing and helpful and I am sure that as the season progresses their command of the English language will improve. They were delightful and very willing to learn.

The choice of food was good. Breakfast: cereals, fruit juice or porridge followed by full English Breakfast, any combination of same or kippers, toast, tea or good coffee.

In the evening there was a choice of four starters, then four main courses including a meat dish, a fish dish or one of the many vegetarian options followed by a choice of four desserts.

The entertainment was excellent. The first night there was a quiz followed by Bingo. The second and third nights was a comedian by the name of Phil Lately who was very funny and on the fourth night was an excellent singer named Shane Solomon who deserves to go far.

This lovely short break was marred by only one thing and that was our coach driver. He appeared from the outset rather surly and upon joining the coach checked us off on his list as we deposited our luggage outside the coach. The weather was very cold but he did not open the coach door until he had loaded all the luggage so by the time we boarded we were rather chilly.

He did not communicate much at all throughout the five days apart from the two trips to the Eden Project and St. Ives when he was obliged to tell us about the area and the landmarks. To be fair he seemed to know his stuff although his delivery was very boring.

Although the weather stayed fine it was bitterly cold and each time we went back to the coach the driver only appeared just before we were due to leave. Virtually everyone was always there well before the due time and had to stand around in the cold waiting for him. Our last trip to St. Ives was for four hours and unless the weather is reasonable there is nothing to do apart from wander around the shops or go into a pub or cafe. We thought it would have been a good idea to have a contingency plan.

Another coach party from the same company was in the same hotel and when we saw their coach driver and his attitude we felt we had drawn the short straw. This driver appeared kind and considerate towards his passengers, always seeing that they were OK. I overheard him saying to someone that he treated his passengers as he would want his mum and dad to be treated which he appeared to do.

We travelled with Alfa Travel and found the short break of 5 days / 4 nights to be good value for money. This included coach travel from the North West to and from Cornwall. Two full day trips, the first to the Eden Project and it included the £12.50 entrance fee. Bed, breakfast and evening meal at the hotel with lunch included on the middle free day. A glass of wine, beer or soft drink with the evening meal and entertainment every night. We paid £134 at the end of March.

We would certainly consider travelling with Alfa Travel again but would make certain that we did not get the same coach driver.
